nbc bay area's marianne favro takes a closer look at what expectant moms can now ask for on the job. >> reporter: on june 16th workers at a burger king on story road in san jose walked off the job to protest the treatment of a pregnant co-worker. she claimed her manager denied her request to leave work early because of severe pain. she later suffered a miscarriage. today a new federal law went into effect requiring employers with at least 15 employees to give pregnant women more protections on the job. it is called the pregnant workers fairness act. the advocacy group a better balance has been fighting for the law for more than a decade. >> the pregnant worker fairness act adds an additional layer of protection which is so important for low wage workers disproportionately women of color in demanding jobs or male dominated occupations where they are now protected from being pushed off the job or terminated when they need a reasonable accommodation. >> reporter: the vice president of a better balance says too often pregnant women have been denied simple requests on the job. >> we heard
