mark segraves joins us now live from gravelly point. mark, what's the latest? >> reporter: hey, jim. some good news and some bad news. the good news is a recent flyover just conducted by the coast guard shows that most of the oil is now contained here, gravelly point and roaches run. the bad news is wildlife, birds covered in oil, have now been found as far away as the other side of the river in d.c. and along the national mall. >> we've already seen some birds that have been compromised with oil. they've shown up in a couple places. one down by haines point. >> reporter: trying to save so many birds covered in oil is a tough job. as you can see. the geese don't want to be caught, and the sanctuary is right next to the george washington parkway, which causes even more concern. as for cleaning up the spill, which spreads at least eight miles down the potomac river, that won't be easy either because the oil has now spread out so much. >> there are limits to the recovery technology we use. absorbent materials like pads and absorbent booms can only soak up so much.

news4's mark segraves joins us live now. mark, what yhave you learned about this case so far? >> reporter: still a lot of questions unanswered, but here is what we do know that police will confirm for us so far. this is an investigation. about 7:00 one of the children, one of the siblings of the dying young boy, called 911 for help. when paramedics arrived they rushed that boy to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead. police were then contacted. they came back to the house and this is where they found five young children, the oldest of which was 10 years old. those children have been taken into the care of d.c. child and family services who has also launched their own independent investigation to find out why these children were here alone and whether or not they should be returned to any family members. the last word we got from police is they are still trying to locate any adult or guardian who was supposed to be here this morning with these children. that's the very latest live in northwest. mark segraves, news4. >> thanks, mark. >>> well, if you commute on i-66 or

mark segraves has been tracking this story all day and join us live from the wildlife sanctuary with more on the cleanup effort. mark? >> reporter: this is roach's run wild fowl sanctuary right across the street from reagan national airport. everybody knows that parking lot where the limos hang out before they pick you up at the airport. i just got brand new information. i just got off the phone with the department of environment in the district, and they say a coast guard flyover of this area that was just concluded about an hour ago has determined that the oil spill originated here in this lake, this wild fowl sanctuary, roach's run. this is where the highest concentration of oil is, and then it's spread into the river. they still don't know the source of it, but they have determined this is as far up river as the oil is. now, earlier today wildlife officials were on scene here at roach's run trying to gather geese. dozens and dozens of geese covered in oil had to be rounded up today to be taken back and cleaned and released later on. we know at least two dozen geese were recovered.
