meteorologist mark tamayo is tracking the conditions but we begin with ktvu's cara liu who is learning new information about the evacuations. >> the weather conditions posed a challenge for firefighters out here in fairfield today. it took 2-1/2 hours to get the fire under control. and right now they are ballparking it at 10 achesser. it started -- acres. it started about 2:00 p.m. there is a lot of dry grass, temperatures were in the 90s. there were homes nearby. the fire did jump to the north side of highway 12. firefighters did bump this up to a four alarm fire enlisting the help of a strike team as well as a half dozen other area fire departments wanting to know as many resources on it as possible. 20 homes on james street were revacuated at one point for a -- evacuated at one point for a while. >> dry grass. very fast spread of fire right now. this year. just with the drought conditions. we -- we bumped up our first alarm. we added more engines and it still wasn't enough. it spotted a quarter mile. which is uncharacteristic and with the winds fires move very fast. >> reporter: 30

meteorologist mark tamayo has more on the weather but first ktvu's john fowler joins us live at a red cross evacuation center where they are hoping for good news. john? >> reporter: that's right. right now the -- here neighbors have been dropping off pet food, boxes and canned and pet carriers. plus the salvation army began serving dinner for families whose homes are still at risk from the fire. >> reporter: this fire is still burning across the hills of pope valley. clouds of emotions. >> scary. tiring. worrisome. >> she fled her home of 15 years. >> got the kids. got the dog and the cat. chickens and turkeys are still there and my husband stayed back. >> reporter: firefighters protecting 50 homes where resident could not or would not leave. the wind and humidity today favored firefighters. 280 structures remain at risk and evacuations still in effect. american red cross volunteers expected a new surge of needy people. >> we expect twice as many to spend the night. >> reporter: the red cross expects 60 people tonight. >> especially accommodating the people who evacuated with their pe

our meteorologist mark tamayo is here now. doesn't look good. >> yeah. when i arrived to work at 3:00 p.m. i was watching the fog, it has been increasing. clouded up over the past few minutes. going in and out. the fog is a factor. it is not going to be completely clear. there are breaks in the clouds as well. lots of low clouds and fog near the coast, pushed into the bay. the fog will be a factor in san francisco. you can see a closer look. the golden gate bridge. a few patches pushing back into the bay. a lot of fireworks shows, all the red dots correspondent to the fireworks displays. inland neighborhoods in the 70s. here is a look at san francisco. as you saw with the live cameras. low clouds and you want to bundle up. temperatures in the mid-50s. 55 at 9:30 p.m. coming up more about the fog for saturday morning and the one direction temperatures will be trending. >>> in many fire departments the 6:00 p.m. hour is the official beginning of maximum fire response activities for the many fires that will be set off tonight. especially after the many well

as we go to mark tamayo, you notice the smoke was coming pretty much straight up. that should not be an issue for the weather. >> that's right, tori. take a look at the trees in that area. they are not moving around that much. that links up nicely with the weather conditions in the south bay. winds only around 5, 6 miles an hour. here is another perspective with our south bay camera looking out toward that. it looks like the activity has been, in fact, maybe scaling back a little bit probably the help of all of the other extra crews arriving on the fire scene over the past few minutes. the weather, temperatures in the 70s. winds on the light side. pretty moist out there in tems of relative humidity, right around 65%. we do not have extreme fire conditions here in the bay area. as far as the fog, in fact, the fog, you can see banked up near the immediate coastline. still a few lingering showers out to the south and east the sierra. current numbers out there, we'll show you some cool ones. san francisco in the upper 50s. but a few spots downtown closer to the low to

ktvu meteorologist mark tamayo is standing by with the conditions firefighters are facing now. >> we begin with ken pritchett live tonight. it's a different story than this time last night but the danger still remains. >> it certainly is a different story. in some ways it's the same and i'll explain why. just about 15 minutes ago you could see a slight orange glow over the top of that hill there. that orange glow is gone and that's indicative to what happened last night. the fire laid down when we had cooler temperatures overnight, virtually no wind. that gave firefighters an opportunity to make progress on that fire because they worked overnight. those firefighters are working overnight tonight and essentially what we're told, that fire is still burning but firefighters essentially have it surrounded. >> reporter: a chimney, a foundation, and a swimming pool muddied with ash. this is one of two homes destroyed in the butts canyon fire. about 200 homes were in its path, most in one subdivision. >> we're still considering homes threatened as the fire is active and we have the evacuati

we're going to find out now from mark tamayo what the week ahead looks like in terms of fire danger. >> unfortunately still heat in the monday forecast. the numbers have really been cranking up over the past few days. the look at the concerns around the firearm zone up to the lake and temperatures once again today right around 100 degrees maxing out. so this fire started yesterday. rapidly growing and one key concern here is the steep terrain taking a look at the elevation contours for this part of the region. we're seeing elevations around 1,000 to 2,000 to 2500 feet. some steep changes in the terrain. now currently, it's zipped on by but currently 100 degrees and humidity level around 14% to 16% and tomorrow not too much change. forecasting a high of 102 degrees and the moisture levels coming down as well. here you can see on the satellite to the south and to our east, so the right portion of your screen we're seeing some moisture move into the estate. and that moisture will be approaching if bay area later on tonight into monday morning. and in addition to the lower clouds, the fo

let's check in with our meteorologist mark tamayo for more on the conditions there. >> temperatures have been trending up a bit over the last two or three days especially for this part of the region. temperatures up 100 degrees once again. this was the first fire about five days ago out toward hope valley. this other one developing yesterday out toward the monticello fire. you've been hearing a lot about the very hot temperatures. dry conditions and also the terrain as a huge challenge for the fire crews steep terrain with elevations around 500 to 1,000 to 2,500 feet. that will continue to be a constant fire for all the fire crews in the region. today we topped out at 97 degrees. another hot forecast coming up for tomorrow near the fire zone. forecast high 92 degrees. in addition to the heat, we're also tracking high clouds. we'll have more on that coming up at 10:35. >>> gunfire locked a 10-mile festival, three people from rival bike clubs. police arrested one man but are on the hunt for others. azenith smith joins us live from the shooting. >> reporter: three victims were flown to bay

our meteorologist mark tamayo has been tracking thing for us. mark you were saying some spots are seeing raindrops out had. >> that is right, heather, a rapid change in the weather pattern between 4:00 and 7:00 with an increase in the high clouds and showers and thunderbolts as well. this is the scene towards the south bay, looking out towards san josi, you can see the clouds building up over the hills. the clouds and moisture moving in from the south and east. here is the satellite perspective. a lot of cloud cover moving in from avalanche, approaching fresno, monterey and the bay area. a closer look at radar activity, the focus of the activity has been in the southern half of the region you can see some runs ands and one cell developing around fremont, and reports of thunder there moving across san mateo towards south san francisco offshore. still a little bit of activity to report offshore and also this one moving rapidly out offshore as well near san mateo coastline. coming up, an update on sierra and they picking up thunderstorms and have be

hot dry temperatures are driving the fires and ktvu meteorologist mark tamayo is here with a look at what those firefighters are dealing with. >> that is a constant threat with the temperatures soaring not only in the babe, but a good portion of northern california. look at the current conditions around the two fire zones towards the sand fire, towards the plymouth area, close to yosemite temperatures in the mid-70s and the heat is on track to reach triple-digit territory into sunday with the peak of afternoon heat for tomorrow. parts of area cooled off a bit. san francisco 13 degrees cooler with that high of 72 degrees, but walnut creek actually warmed up just slightly 1 degree warmer than yesterday. a look at triple-digits towards vacaville, walnut creek, brentwood and san ramon and lafayette. as far as the temperatures from this afternoon across the rest of the bay area, most areas cooled off a little bit. san josi in in the upper 80s,livermore 101 degrees, but vallejo into the upper 80s at 87. i'm tracking clouds to the south that impact the bay area castro and more on that chang

our meteorologist mark tamayo is track the weather conditions as firefighters work through the night, but we begin our coverage with ktvu's debora villalon live in yolo county. >> reporter: heather, take a look. can you see how the ridge behind us is glowing a bit tonight. the monticello fire just 30% contained in one day it's grown bigger than the butts fire which is almost out on the opposite side of the lake. a red glow over the foothills west of winters. dramatic, but representing real danger. >> can you tell me if there is an engine? >> reporter: this evacuee grabbed her pet and cleared out in the middle of the night. 40 holidays in her rural neighborhood, the golden bear estates and the fire growing at a gallop, evacuations mandatory. >> we live on a very wooded piece, 25 acres. >> reporter: how worried are you? >> very. >> reporter: her alarm easing somewhat tonight as the fire burns north into wildland. alongside highway 128 provided a ready source of water for helicopters making drops all day. >> we moved a large amount of resources from the butts fire over to this incident.
