to mars are second to none. the onlyis still nation that has successfully landed missions on the martian surface. fiscal year 2000 our total mars exploration totals $6 billion. ongoing and future missions will continue to improve our understanding of mars, allowing us to make better site selection for future land emissions -- for future land missions. nine years ago we landed the spirit and opportunity rovers on the surface of mars. we currently have two satellites in orbit observing the planets. last august, after the most harrowing landing in the history of planetary exploration the curiosity touched down on the martian surface and is now assessing whether mars was or is today and aren't able to support life. today an environment able to support life. we will soon have radiation data from an instrument of curiosity that will help us better understand and overcome challenges to human life in the martian environment. year 2014 budget includes funding for another mission to the red planet, continues operations of

supervisor mar. >> supervisor mar: i wanted to ask the sheriff, this is not about the supplemental but just on one of the general items. there's a 1.3 million dollar i believe capital -- line item that has to do with the acquisition of the parcel that his next-door to the hall of justice. some of the community groups have raised concerns that there hasn't been enough discussion on that item. as we modernize the jail. i wonder if you could comment on that item because it has been raised by a number of community-based groups. >> we welcome the discussion. we had a forum a few days ago where a number of groups have been under the impression that we are looking to expand jail space which is false. it was -- many years ago before was elected sheriff, by the department of public works that the hall of justice would be demolished. in a staggered approach of replacing the departments that are in the hall of justice, whether the courts, police department, district attorney's office, adult probation and the two jails on the sixth and seventh floor, is essential that we replace the jails on the s

as supervisor mar just mentioned, the senior's populations in both districts have been growing. the total number of seniors in district 1 and 4 is 31,98 4, age 60 and older. of which over 58% are asian or pacific islanders and 39% speak none or limited english. and over 30% of the seniors age 60 and older lives alone. the senior center located in district 1 and senior center located in district 4 serves over 200 seniors a day. in the past year with the budget cuts and nutrition program we have to limit our service. we had to turn away seniors who simply want to find a place to stay out of hunger, a place to hang out with friends, a place where they call their second home. besides our nutrition program, betop is another program for our seniors. three hours on the day of the press release, all of our places are filled and we have to generate a very long waiting list. we need the funding to provide the tech support, system maintenance in order to keep our seniors connected to the world to get roots and to their distant loved ones. on behalf of our seniors i would like to thank you,
