i am martha maccallum. this is "the story." the president's urgency and wanting to get the country back open comes as the united states economy is convulsing in ways we have never seen before. 22 million unemployed and just four weeks. that's unemployment that roared from 3.5% just a couple months ago. now 13.5% of the labor force is out of work. as retail sales crater and industrial production fell more than it has since 1946. this is all completely unprecedented, and no one knows how much deeper it will grow if we don't start to turn the wheels and soon. it seems that the rush to shut the economy down is now matched by the opposite, the fear of what will happen if we don't open it back up. a responsible but timely manner. that's a lot of what we just saw tonight from the white house. that is the focus is the president lays out his plan to reopen the united states. >> president trump: a national shutdown is not a sustainable long-term solution. to preserve the health of our citizens, you must also preserve the health and funct

i am martha maccallum and this is "the story." the virus by most expert accounts is starting the process of wearing down, according to the numbers we're looking at. while the number of deaths is daunting, we also know that the predictions in the failed models were way off and that they triggered a lot of action that have left the economy devastat devastated. the ramifications of that are something we are going to wrestle with for some time. in this country over 25,000 people have died from the coronavirus so far. the majority of them in the hard-hit new york region which has shouldered by far the biggest burden in this thus far. as a point of reference, the 2018 flu season, america lost 34,000 people, that was after many of the country had been vaccinated. it's a point that doesn't get brought up a whole lot. over 16 million people in this country have not lost their lives but they have lost their livelihoods. they have lost their jobs, their sense of security. they have gone from building new homes and businesses and going on for
