ktvu's john sasaki is live now in martinez where one school is handling an outbreak. >> reporter: this is the school in contra costa county that has been hit the hardest by whooping cough. >> reporter: friday afternoon in martinez and as kids got out of school the air was filled with excitement. but at the elementary school there is concern. >> how easily spreadable it is. having someone with whooping cough and talking to them, you could get it. pretty scary. >> reporter: there have been 49 cases of whooping cough across the county. 9 of them happened here. 20% of the cases have been here. >> i don't want my kids to be miserable. we have three. i don't want any of them to be sick. i don't want to be sick so i can't take care of them. >> reporter: officials say take time to get over whooping cough. babies under 6 months are more at risk. we have had four babies hospitalized this year in contra costa county. luckily all are recovering. in 2010, 10 babies died throughout the state. and what we are trying to do is protect the babies. >> reporter: one parent said he was taking his daughter
