i'm in charge of the ocean safety operations for maui county. it only takes five minutes for a person to go brain dead or to drown. for us a lot of times the surf is way offshore, and so it's all about the response time. you know, how quickly can we respond from point a to point b, or from the safe zone to the impact zone where the waves are breaking and back out of that. the ski just allowed us to enhance that. instead of being able to operate as far as we can see, we're able to operate for miles and beyond. and when you have somebody that's unconscious and you have to give them cpr, put them on oxygen, having the ability to have that ski to get them on board and get them to shore to better, quicker medical care is a key component to what we do day in and day out. when you go to rescue somebody on a jet ski, you signal to them with your left hand, you grab their hand and give it a little bit of throttle and pull them onto the sled out of harm's way. >> i think what sets archie apart in the lifeguard world is he has decades of innovating rescue

this is video from yesterday as flossie made its way across maui. the national weather service has canceled all storm and flash flood warning across the hawaiian islands, but it does say power outages and road closures are still likely. flossie is expected to bring rain and high winds to oahu today. flossie is also causing problems for people right here in the bay area. at sfo yesterday we found a number of united airlines passengers who were told their flights had been canceled. in total united canceled six flights to hawaii. one woman was told she was have to wait until saturday to get another flight out. that meant having to cancel her trip to see her best friend. >> i was pretty bummed, cried in the wash room a bit and called my mom. >> another couple we spoke with says they were trying to get to hawaii to see their son's wedding. they say the bride and groom-to- be were already there, but everyone else was stuck. now, we checked in this morning with the bay area's three major airports. sfo says it had to cancel nine flights yesterday, oakland r

i believe we have a live shot to show you from maui where you can see the surf and the wind picking up and the rain is already falling in some cases as well. this is the first tropical cyclone. they are blaiseing for that -- bracing for that. i want to give you a look at flossie. the winds are 40 miles an hour. as dave mentioned, a relatively weak storm. it has to be 39 miles an hour to qualify for a tropical storm. so barely making it there. it's making a path toward the hawaiian islands. here's when we expect today and into tomorrow. later today, into the afternoon, it will cross over maui and then oha u and then -- oahu and then kauaiy. and then it will drop to a tropical depression. rainfall anywhere from 5 to 10 inches in isolated areas. in the mountains areas we could see 15 inches strong enough winds to topple trees, power lines, a dus surf as well as high seas. that's what -- dangerous surf as well as high sea es. that's what they are dealing -- sees. that's what they are dealing with. here at home, we're unseasonably cool. we'll remain that way. the system will be locked in fo
