it is not an anti-mcclellan speech. ok? this particular speech was written on or about the same day as the blind memorandum. the future was looking dim for lincoln's reelection. there had been no significant battlefield successes since gettysburg. grant's plan had resulted in nothing but high union casualties. the republican bosses were concerned that the voting public, which at that point were white men, had not gotten behind the emancipation proclamation. even though there were now black soldiers now serving in the union army, for the first time in history. there would be some form of voting made available for soldiers serving in the field. as of 1862, only wisconsin was allowing men to vote somewhere other than their local district. the war was going to extend through the elections of 1864, and this was going to force states to come to grips with an impossible decision. should they deny their soldiers fighting in the war the right to suffrage because they were away from home? or should they pass laws and create systems t

the democrats hoped that they some of theer soldiers' votes that they nominated mcclellan to mcclellan was a fairly moderate candidate who was prounion and pro-war, but he was also proslavery. the vice presidential nominee was the more presidential one. george h pendleton, who is also depicted in the spielberg movie -- if you want to see one of the copperheads who opposed the 13th amendment, pendleton is one of them. he was a congressman from ohio. pendleton was ardently proslavery and also antiwar. what the democrats hoped that they could do was balance their ticket. we are going to have a pro-war candidate for president and an antiwar, known as a copperhead candidate, for vice president. and that way we can have a broad appeal to a lot of different democratic voters. the democrats then wrote the platform. and they made one huge miscalculation in their platform. if you read the democratic let form, it is a huge indictment of the lincoln administration. they called the war a failure to keep in mind, the summer has been going very badly. lincoln thinks he is going to lose them as of the

it happened on mcclellan road in cupertino. ktvu's janine de la vega is on the scene and joins us live to explain what happened. good afternoon, janine. >> reporter: good afternoon, tori. it's a very tragic accident. mcclellan road here is closed for a mile from bub to telling while sheriff's deputies investigate. we just learned that sheriff's deputies think they have a possible identification of this teenaged boy but they are still trying to notify his parents. sheriff's officials say the boy was riding his bike to school on mcclellan at around 8:00 this morning when a big rig traveling the same direction hit him. investigators say he was thrown off the bike and rig ran over him and kept driving. paramedics responded to help the teen but he was pronounced dead at the scene. he was wearing a helmet. those who witnessed collision tracked down the big rig and he stopped. >> investigators say he was shocked that he was actually involved in an accident. once he learned of that, he's been very cooperative with us. we're still tryin

the teenage boy was headed westbound on mcclellan just before bubb road. and deputies say a big truck described as a dump truck was headed in the same direction and struck and killed a boy right over there beyond that white he railroad crossing there is. it happened around 8:00 a.m. so the boy may have been headed to school. there are four schools in the area, lincoln elementary, john f. kennedy middle school, and deanza college. investigators are at schools right now working with school officials trying to see who did not show up for classes today. hopefully through that process, they'll know the identity of the boy soon to call his parents. this is a well-traveled area. so when the accident happened, there were plenty of witnesses. the struck and killed the boy but h& kept going. those witnesses followed the truck. >> the witnesses notified the driver somehow and the driver stopped about half a mile away on bubb road. and once he was told he was involved in the accident, he was unaware and didn't know. he was very cooperative with us and we're getting hi

one of the things that mcclellan says is, well, you know, they didn't put that in the constitution because by time they got around to drafting the constitution, they were so over all that natural rights stuff, right? i mean, that was done. you know, that was the kind of exuberant thing that they did. but then when they got around to the constitution, they were very sober, and is they did not bring that up again. my open feeling is that -- my own feeling is that the reason they did not say anything when they drafted the constitution about the declaration of independence was they understood what those words meant. and just as it happened in massachusetts, it would have meant the end of slavery. right? i mean, you know, that language was very powerful. so i think that's why it wasn't -- because they were very careful in the constitution. they were trying to hold this together. they were trying not to make -- you know, to keep this compromise working. and so they were very circumspect in all of their language about slavery, and they didn't say anything that would immediately precipitate that.

johnston never ran for president against davis the way mcclellan did against lincoln but the hostility between johnston and davis became more intense, lasted longer and perhaps had more adverse impact on the confederate war effort than did the lincoln mcclellan conflict on the union war effort. davis from mississippi and johnston from virginia were fellow cadets at west point in the 1820s. they graduated one year apart. they knew each other there but they were not close. rumor later circulated that they had had a fight over a girl at the academy but that story is almost certainly apocryphal. be that as it may when the war began and virginia seceded, johnston resigned from the united states army and davis appointed him as general commanding one of the two largest field armies in virginia. beauregard, commanded the other. those two armies combined to win first battle, what eventually became the first battle of manassas on july 21st, 1861. in the two months before that battle, many people in the south had expected jefferson davis to take personal command of the main confederate army. afte
