. >> joining me from orlando is nbc's blake mccoy. what more can you tell us about mateen's visits to that club? >> he is one of several men coming forward to say they have witnessed mateen at this club before and one person saying he has been frequenting this club for several times. the fbi we can tell you is looking into these claims and does this mean he had been scouting the club for several years as a potentially terror target or was he, in fact, a patron who then, at some way along the way, became hostile toward the club and had different feelings and started plotting this attack? that is what they are looking into right now. some of these patrons witnessed that agitated hostile behavior at the club. he would be alone drinking and be prone to violent outbursts and sometimes talking about his family. that is all under investigation. one thing that is going to be a huge help to investigators is the electronics they now have of mateen, including a samsung cell phone. we can tell you they have had no trouble accessing that cell phon

. >> joining us now from orlando is nbc's blake mccoy. blake, what more can you tell us about this investigation? >> reporter: betty, good morning to you. behind me, can you still see the fbi processing this crime scene and they say it could still take quite more time before they are complete. we are learning some new details, including that the night of the siege, the shooter called a local tv station, a producer picked up the phone and the shooter said i am the shooter and pledge allegiance to isis. we are also learning that the shooter claims to have explosives on him and that he was going to be placing hostages in each corner of the building with those explosives strapped to them. so this is the information that local officers had as they were deciding whether or not to breach the building and go inside. we are since learned the fbi has not found any evidence that he actually had splos on him that night. president obama is set to visit here today. he'll be meeting with some of the families of the victims, some of the survivors, as wel

nbc's blake mccoy joins us from outside the pulse nightclub. what's the latest there? >> reporter: well, it's been 24 hours, betty, since that horrific scene unfolded here in orlando. 50 people killed, 53 injured in that nightclub mibehind me. as you can see, law enforcement still working at this hour to process this scene and piece together this investigation. this work is being done as we are beginning to put together a portrait of the shooter, omar a coworker paints him as a person who had a lot of derogatory feelings towards people of different races, people of different sexual orientation, women, saying in particular that he did not respect women at all. that's backed up by his ex-wife, who we're hearing from this morning, saying she was abused by him in their short four-month marriage. take a listen. >> a few months after we were married, i saw his instability, and i saw that he was spiteful and would get mad out of nowhere. that's when i started worrying about my safety. after a few months, he started abusing me physically. he was mentally unstable and mentally
