we're live in menlo park. you've been there all week.ou know that there are a lot of homes damage or destroyed? >> reporter: more than 1,000 homes burned in shasta county. crews need as much help as they can get. the fire department's work ing with the alameda county sheriff's department. the team arrived in redding on tuesday. they'll be working with city representatives. they'll be smarexperimenting wi new mapping software. the fire chief says this is, quote, breaking new ground with the mission. the drones will help document the damage in the areas destroyed by creating high resolution interactive maps. he says those will be helpful for homeowners to not only locate their property, but will also help them send the information to their insurance companies. the fire captain says that's important because it could speed up the rebuilding process by allowing the county and city to prioritize when and where to begin reconstruction. the fire department and the sheriff's department have worked on joint projects like this over the tubbs fire.

we're live in menlo park with what they're expecting to see. you know there is a lot of damage to see, but this has got to be an interesting perspective. >> reporter: it will be. good morning. there's over 17 wildfires burning in california. as you mentioned, therr 125,000 acres. to give you some perspective, that's an area larger than the size of th 1,000 homes have bee destroyed. part of the assessment will be to include using drones. the fire department has eight drones. it's one of the first fire departments to adopt drone technology back in 2014. fighting these fires has been a challenge, and so will clean up. given the damage it can be difficult to get crews into some neighborhoods. the drones provide a 360 degree aerial view. the drones also have thermal imaging cameras, that's a huge asset, especially when dealing with these fires. some parts the smoke has been so thick it's been hard for firefighters to even see just a few feet in front of them. and drones can also help victim. before sending boots on the ground into potentially danger

( will )a man who fled the country after allegedly killing a 6-year-old girl while street racing in menlo park in 2009 has been arrested, police said today. shannon steven fox was wanted in connection with the death of lisa xavier in a collision at the intersection of willow road and bayfront expressway on the afternoon of nov. 12, 2009. a street race between two vehicles ended when one of them ran a red light and crashed into a car carrying xavier and her mother. the young girl died the next day and her mother was seriously injured. surveillance footage showed the driver of the car that caused the crash then exited and got into the other car involved in the race and it sped away, police said. police said fox fled the area and eventually the country, and has been a fugitive for nearly a decade.
