harold schapel-hoe-men is fire chief of the menlo park fire protection district. this is video that he shot back in 2001. his crew, made up of bay area first responders, were at ground zero for more than two weeks. sifting through debris and looking for remains. the chief said that when you go to an event like this you know what evil looks like. he has been to other tragedies but said nine eleven was massive. many of the first responders who were at ground zero came back and got sick. while that is tough he says everyone likely would have gone again if it meant helping out again. he remembers the conditions at ground zero and how a first responder he knew almost took a bad fall.(j.r.)i spoke with the fire chief for more than an hour or so today. it was something to hear him... hear him...something to today. it was an hour or so for more than the fire chief i spoke with (j.r.)(j.r.)i spoke with the fire chief for more than an hour or so today. it was something to hear him... police in menlo park have arrested a man... accused of trying to rape a woman. it happened yesterday just before 5-p-m near oak court and woodland avenue. the woman was able to fight back and break free from the man. police arrested 19-year-old rogelio artiga... after he was positively identified by ( james ) in the east bay... a 10 year old girl is in critical condition after being hit by a car in brentwood. police say it happened at balfour road and guise way. they say the girl was in the crosswalk when she was hit. she was flown to u-c davis medical center. the driver is cooperating with police... and they did not appear to be under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
