only news of a joint effort with merck to develop a cancer vaccine. we're going to talk to an analyst about how big that opportunity could be for this company. also ahead this year, moha mohamed el-erian let's begin with the minutes just released. steve liesman with some of the highlights and takeaways >> sara, fed officials say they're so intent on hiking rates they intend to keep doing so even as the labor market slows. fed officials, the minutes from the september meeting are showing that, excuse me one second here. that they think the ongoing rate increases are going to be appropriate to a level that is restrictive and until it slows the economy. while they acknowledge risk to tightening too much, they say inflation is such a problem that they emphasize the cost of taking too little action rightly outweighs the cost of taking too much action. on this fed inflation front, they say they believe inflation is unacceptably high and declining more slowly than anticipated. labor market meanwhile the very tight. a few subtle dovish comments they did say s

that would be merck.eating street's expectations. its sales of the targeted cancer drug up 20% in the quarter as they found new ways to use that new types of tumors to go after. the company's ceo robert davis joined us earlier on "squawk box. >> top line growth at 14%. 18% if you adjust for foreign currency, and importantly, those results allowed us to invest 22 cents in the form of business development to augment our pipeline to continue to bring in great science that's going to protect us for the future as well we feel really good about where the business is, the momentum we have, and really the fundamentals we're seeing. >> that stock up by a little more than 2% an important note about robert davis himself. he's going to be succeeding ken frazer as chairman of merck. ken frasier, the company said, is planning to retire after 30 years of service in various roles. most recently as ceo >> let's get to other top movers this morning frank holland joins us it's no surprise, it's just pleasing to me, frank. g

pharma stocks like pfizer, merck and lily all in the green and united health, cigna, humana all higherike these moves >> yeah, there's some really interesting setups it's really been that way all year i do think it's interesting. it's not really a rising tide lifts all boats. i look at a name like pfizer, yes, it was up today but to me it looks like it's rolling over and merck is making new highs. some of the company specific drivers are very important in this market, even for a more defensive space like health care merck, for example, recent good newnews on the phase three cardio vascular drug trial released to one of their latest acquisitions, it diversified them away from keytruda. there's a lot of things going on within a sector that investors are interested in, profitability, margins, cash flow, the type of characteristics that i think you'll continue to want in this market. >> i think the space has been a great place to hide out. i mean, we have reasonable valuations, right, and there is still growth and you have dividends and i think merck, guy, i'd be interested to hear your op

merck to me is better for it as well, is this one of the story good story, good company, bad stock. >h, i think it is, for me. >> i didn't know if you were asking other people. >> just rhetorical when you look at the stock, down 50% year to date even after this pop, bug up 8% still down 7% for the month. so still a bit of headwinds, the mercks of the world is where i would rather by. >> isn't there something that they know something about the next phase of this cancer drug merck would not be reupping if they didn't feel there was good news in the pipeline. >> you spoke to the stock action, which makes me wonner, is it so bad that it's good? a revenue stream, most of it is tethered to vaccine, so so the them branches out and partners with a behe moth like merck is good to me i do like the story. because at some point, this covid, some flu variant or vaccine, something has though give you have to get the next frontier, and melanoma, i can't thing of a much better one. >>> and joe concerning will be at the disruptor summit. >>> charge it or don't we're tapping into the consumer and how t

merck spun off because they wanted to unload the least attractive assets. they have a bunch of drugs losing patent protection and nothing interesting in the pipeline hard for wall street to get excited about that when you give everybody the draws, you can't just say wow, it's gold. in the end, they have been able to mostly hit the targets and the stock looks dirt cheap with a 4.6% yield but i have no idea if they can hit the earnings estimates which means it's tough to tell if this is a stock or a trap i'm not sure it's worth the anxiety to stick around and find out and by the way, they beat the targets. who cares about the targets? next up, two years ago pfizer spun off the off patent generic business with a company i told you to sell since i took the show over 17 years ago since then they've sold the bio similars business, generic drug for biotech to an indian company and reportedly thinking about selling the european over-the-counter drug business but just like organon this is not the part of pharma people are excited about. pfizer spun off -- bad chart

maria: i'm glad you mentioned keytruda, a merck drug which was so critical and it's such an importantving this national conversation enough? are we seeing biotech as a priority for government? i know that we talk a lot about china. china had has recognized that they want to own some of this. tell me about the global consequences of perhaps not having biotech as a major national priority. >> well, that would be an unmimitigated disaster. what biotechnology has done for the world, when you think about from 1975 on, two things occurred. in san francisco and in palo alto work out of the cohen boyer laboratories created recombinant dna. across the pond at the university of cambridge the work that was done there in the laboratory of millstein and maltres changed outcome by he creating monoclonal antibodies. take that created a new world. in the early days pharmaceutical companies worked on making small molecules. now everyone makes monoclonal antibodies and uses he recombinant dna and americas is the leader. the in china, they made it the number one priority of their future. we don't talk a
