i talked to someone who said they brp to say they're for cory booker and were at a small gathering with michael but this state is tough for democrats in a general election. a lot of the democrats feel guilty about 2016. and they know they had a great 2018. so they talk about if only we pushed the ball harder up the hill. worked harder up the hill. that's a general dynamic coming up among caucusgoers much more ideological and talking about the party. >> i think for sure that this is not a settled argument yet among democrats about why they lost in 2016. and you hear that contradiction in candidate messaging where they're trying to figure out whether they should be focusing more on the issues that really grab the millennials who didn't show up for hillary clinton or whether it's about going afters the trump voters and finding an economic message that connects this time. >> this fascinating moment where the republicans, led by president trump, are determined to brand the democrats as far left socialists and that provides a really great opportunity here. you go to the town halls and talk to voters,

we have heard about the vegan message that cory booker is putting out there. i think back to michaely banning sugary drinks and you couldn't drink something bigger than this or that. trans fats, he also wanted to eliminate. is this a message, do you think, so far in terms of what the democratic candidates, something to resonate with a wide group of americans across the country? >> jessica: lou, i can come i don't think senator booker will run on a platform with this, health insurance or texting people 70% tax rate, taxing the wealthy. what about all of those messages? >> jessica: i think democrats and republicans have to come together to build a community that is healthy, nationwide to. i think there are questions about the environmental impact on some of these things. there were questions about the real health impacts. we have a diabetes info debt -- epidemic and the cause behind that but that is something we have to work on. this is not something solved by the leaders on both sides but come together to help make a healthier america. >> martha: i do want to ask you both different to
