i'm michael shure, and you are in "the war room." >> michael: the fight for women's rights continue in texas. thousands of people flooded the state capitol as to protesting the abortion ban bill. right now there are 40 clinics operating in texas this bill would cut that to five clinics serving a population of 13 million women spread out over 72,000 square miles. that would mean women in he el paso would have to drive over 500 miles to get to the nearest clinic. nearly 200 people signed up to testify, but before they got a chance to speak state legislation got into a debate among themselves. a texas sized whoop she argued that her bill would not force clinics to close and even if it did, that would be good for women. sylvester turn turner challenged her on that. any challenge to that would be foolish. she then faced questions from jessica ferrar. >> did you look at the potential for clinic closings. >> you asked what my intention was? it is for the health. >> that wasn't my question. did you look at capacity? can you answer that? yes or no. >> it's for the health and safety. >> you're n

[ ♪ theme music ♪ ] >> michael: the texas state legislature returned to work today, and if that's what you want to call it, a huge crowd was there to greet them. 5,000 people turned out to protest a republican bill that would ban abortion after 20 weeks. we should note that this kind of abortion is extremely rare. it's often used when families discover the fetus has serious health issues and might not survive outside the room. so criminalizing this type of abortion would force women to give birth to fetuses with no bain function or other fatal birth defects. the bill was thwarted by the senator wendy davis in an 11th hour filibuster, but governor perry immediately called back an emergency session starting today. davis got huge applause from the crowd when they accused governor perry of ignoring texas values. they as journaled and now the process starts all over again. while the fate of texas hangs in the balance, 12 other states have the same ban in police.

i'm michael smerconish in for chris matthews. leading off tonight, it was a big day for the defense in the george zimmerman trial with a key medical expert backing up zimmerman's account of the shooting. vincent di maio is a forensic pathologist hired by the defense. today he testified that the physical evidence was consistent with zimmerman's account that martin was leaning over him when the shot was fired. that's important, since zimmerman said he shot the unarmed teenager in self-defense, and the self-defense has argued that zimmerman's wounds mean he could have sustained head trauma. the defense may be winding down its case. how important was today's testimony in establishing reasonable doubt. msnbc's craig melvin has been keeping an eye on all of today's proceedings and he joins us live from the florida courthouse. craig? >> michael, good evening to you. two to four inches, two to four inches. that's the distance that di maio was from martin. that was one of his highlights from the testimony today. he went on to say that the
