i'm andrea mitchell in new york. one of the ten most powerful storms to ever develop in the atlantic is just hours from slamming into the gulf coast of florida. hurricane milton is expected to double in size before making landfall tonight. its strength unprecedented for a storm so late in the hurricane season. the eye wall should make landfall between 10:00 p.m. and 2:00 a.m. local time, an earlier estimate, near sarasota, as coastal waters there near high tide. this is a combination, a nightmare scenario. storm alerts are intensifying. up through georgia, across central florida, this is going to be destructive. the hurricane's outer bands are spawning tornadoes. residents try to evacuate. for some, the time has passed. tampa's skyway bridge is closed. that's a key access over the southern portion of tampa bay. president biden and vice president harris are about to be briefed on the latest preparations and the panel of milton as well as the ongoing recovery from helene. the president warning this storm will not be su

and you can see, as mary bender mitchell put it, i love this line. it is curious much louder. guns sound when they are pointed at you and that was the case there in shepherdstown. so this flood of 68,000 wounded very quickly dissipated. these soldiers ran out of town looking cover looking to get out of range of the federal guns and the of wounded dropped down to maybe just a couple of hundred at this point in the war only the more seriously wounded that could not be moved at this point we're still left behind in shepherdstown and some of them would remain there. all the way until january of 1863. so shepherdstown town's main ordeal was over. but of course, their job, the role of these civilians was not over in terms of taking care of the wounded who were still left there in the town itself. and during the course of that, there were many great connections and bonds that were formed between these strangers, confederate soldiers, places as far away as florida that now found a with the civilians of shepherdstown itself. and again, the civilians as you can see, one confederate sold

paul mitchell is vice president of pdi of the ballots returned so far. he says there's one trend that's downtown in particular. the people returning their ballots are largely older voters. in fact, while older voters make up just about a quarter of the electorate, he says more than half of the ballots returned so far from californians aged 65 and older. contrast that with the younger voters aged 18 to 25 they to make up a quarter of the electorate get just 10% of the returned ballots are from their demographic. so real disparity and who's returning those ballots early. as for where it all stands on the political spectrum, mitchell is closely monitoring the share of each party that has voted so far. republicans are a little bit higher right now. there are about 13%. that's probably because more republicans are homeowners and older and more suburban areas voted by mail for longer. democrats are right at that 10%. so they're performing basically just like the average the group in partisanship that doesn't turn in their ballots early as much as the independe
