the family of mohammod youssuf abdulazeez is revealing details about his mental state before last week's deadly attack on two military facilities. investigators are analyzing a text message of mohammod youssuf abdulazeez sent to one of his friends just hours before the shooting. cnn boris sanchez is in chattanooga for us. first we know there are vigils and memorials today. how are the victims' family members doing in all of this? >> reporter: we should tell you that the mother of randall smith, a sailor who was shot on thursday and passed away early yesterday morning visited the vigil just about an hour ago and she came up and laid something down. it was a baseball glove and an american flag with writing on it and she became visibly emotional when she saw a photograph of her son in the memorial. i got a chance to speak with her and she said that she was overwhelmed seeing the amount of support the community coming out to show support for her son and the other victims. but then she became very distraught when i asked her how the family was doing. she did not want to go further than that.

he's a 24-year-old man, mohammod youssuf abdulazeez. officials say he lived in the nearby town of hickson, tennessee. he's the son of a chattanooga city employee. he's a natural citizen of kuwait. he graduated with a degree in electrical engineer. the tennessee valley authority confirmed this evening that he was an intern there in engineering about five years ago. officials confirmed to nbc news tonight that he was not on federal law enforcement radar for any reason before this attack today. they say he was not in any terrorism database, he was not under fbi surveillance. as far as we know, mohammed abdulazeez only run-in with law enforcement was an arrest earlier this year for dui, for driving under the influence. that was the source of the mug shot you've seen all over the place today. well, investigators descended on the abdulazeez household this evening. we don't know why, but two women were seen being led away in handcuffs. we do not know why, we do not know who they are. we do not know if they were taken in for questioning or what
