let's bring in our damian trujillo live in half moon bay for us today. damian, you've been out there since this morning. how is the situation now? reporter well, audrey, i was in some of that traffic jam headed into half moon bay. they closed off westbound highway 92 because they wanted everybody that wanted to get out of half moon bay to actually get out. right now, things are back to normal. in fact, the surfers are out as soon as the tsunami warning was lifted, they came out because they thought they might catch some of the best waves at that time. and they did. they're doing that actually right now as well. the waves are crashing a little harder than they typically do here along the coastline in half moon bay, but things are back to normal. a lot of people are coming out and watching the waves as well to see what it's like and what could have been. it was a frightening moment for a lot of them. they headed to higher ground. all right, damian, we heard that there were actually some problems with the tsunami warnings in san mateo county. i understand y

deputies blocked the road into half moon bay as a precaution. once the warning was lifted, the locals who stayed behind came out to see what came of the waves and the warning. some say they never heard any sirens that are supposed to warn of a possible tsunami. the office of emergency services tells us they did not activate the sirens because it was determined there would be no tsunami, and they didn't want to frighten the locals. still, the sheriff of san mateo county kept a close eye on the situation. our deputies are out here. we're monitoring the waterways because it is important to keep the lines of communication open with our communities. and especially on the coast here, because we're so close to the water. the mayor of half moon bay says even though many residents evacuated, there was no formal evacuation order issued here. but he's pleased with the response. the sheriff's department was active and on the streets or highway half moon bay chp was active as well. we were preparing to see if we have to evacuate and sheriff's deputies are st

the harbormaster in half moon bay has been on alert all day, hitting the water to make sure boaters and surfers are aware of the danger that comes with those waves. here's nbc bay area's damian trujillo. the high surf warning is in effect until noon on tuesday all across the pacific coast, according to the national weather service. so the harbormaster here in half moon bay has been out in the water all day, making sure that the boaters and the surfers are okay for surfers in half moon bay. christmas came early and santa was riding the swells. back on the beach, crowds gathered to watch the enormous waves and the surfers braving the conditions to ride him in half moon bay. as the surfers enjoy their craft up the road in pacifica, massive waves pounded the coastline and that is always an attraction here. families came out to witness mother nature in action. how wet. it was fun. so first opportunity might as well enjoy it, right? while the crashing waves are a sight to see, first responders want to remind you they're also potentially deadly. the national weather service says that these are

here in half moon bay. it's such a sight to see right now because there aren't any surfers out there. understandably, the entire area is. you always see a lot of walkers and joggers and whatnot. there's virtually no one out here right now as people are just now beginning to come back into town after heeding to that tsunami warning and going back eastbound on highway 92 and over the summit there of highway 35. and so right now, things are beginning to normalize, if you will, here in half moon bay, waves are pretty strong, but not as strong as what was expected, which is a good thing for the locals here because it had a lot of people worried. a lot of people evacuated as soon as they got that alert on their cell phones, they moved up to higher ground again. eastbound on highway 92, over at the skyline summit area. that's where they parked their cars and just waited it out until the they opened the door. the road, because 92 westbound was closed for some time, allowing all these cars to get out of half moon ba

we're in half moon bay. i'm damian trujillo nbc bay area newsthank you. damien. take a look at the coast now in emeryville. even though the tsunami warning was lifted about an after about an hour after the major earthquake, the aftershocks continued all day. dozens of them. chief meteorologist jeff ranieri is tracking them for us, the northern california is still shaking. you know, all the time it is. and just a powerful reminder for all of us. we got the alerts on our phone. your nerves are probably on edge. this was something not only in the bay area. people are talking about, but all across the world because of the size and the magnitude of this earthquake. so this happened just off the coastline here of eureka, as we have been reporting all day long. at 1044 this morning. epicenter. here's the thing. it was only one mile below the earth's surface that is extremely shallow for an earthquake. and that's why there was a fear we could get a tsunami wave and wave action being created that could have been extremely damaging to the northern coastline. thankfully, th

i'm in half moon bay. tim johns, abc seven news and as people on the peninsula were evacuating, some were delayed by a crash involving a motorcycle. >> sky seven shows us the aftermath. you see a mangled motorcycle there in the middle of the intersection on highway one in el granada. it's still unclear what caused the crash, but the chp says the motorcyclist was severely injured and is being treated at stanford medical center. the crash blocked lanes for a time. >> the san francisco zoo's proximity to the pacific prompted officials to close that facility out of an abundance of caution because of the tsunami warning. as you can see in this video from sky seven, there was no one to be found. the zoo issued a statement saying, quote, guests have been evacuated, animals secured, and staff have moved to higher ground. the exploratorium also closed today. quote for the safety of our visitors and staf, here's a live look at the exploratorium. this is the view from the roof of our abc seven studios. by the way, it

actually, just near half moon bay, a little bit lighter winds expected for some of our inland areas, eezy day, widespread throughout the bay. that's just the start of this week, though. the winds are going to die down into the overnight hours tonight and we're just going to see some partly cloudy skies in the forecast for us into the early morning hours tomorrow. those clouds become more dense, though, as we head all the way into our tuesday evening forecast. and by wednesday morning we're going to continue to see these gray skies widespread throughout the bay. ahead of our first rain system that trickles its way in starting up in the north bay, just around 7:00, i stop the time right there just to show you. we're already starting to see light to moderate rain in the forecast as we're all heading to bed wednesday night. that system sweeps throughout the bay area as we head into the overnight hours. this is now around 10:00, sweeping throughout the santa clara valley and finishing up with just some lingering showers widespread into the overnight hours. a little bit more activity as we

we have 64 at half moon bay. light winds out of the north at three. make it very comfortable and 66 in redwood city, san francisco, 65 in the mission and 62 in the marina. and for the north bay, 67 in clear lake and 65 here in mill valley. so how about those rain chances? i still think we're kind of in this holding pattern, so to speak, here. when it comes to the storm track through this weekend, even into the mid part of next week. just look at how these storms continue to move well off to the north of us. no, eventually, by the time we get to december, the 13th, we'll see a storm system out here that could have an atmospheric river connection with it. and may actually make it here by the time we get to december the 15th and the 18th, that's our next possible rain chance for us. it'd be nice to get on the board with another storm system here before we get to christmas, because we're starting to see a rain deficit across the east bay and also the south bay right there on that forecast in the seven day. we're going to ep it with 60s for highs, seconds f

half moon bay likely to get to the coast, even for sustained winds. and the winds finally die down by tomorrow night. even once that rain moves out, we'll have gusty conditions tomorrow afternoon. so the rain will move out first. then it will take several more hours for the winds to gradually relax. in terms of snow, we are talking about anywhere from a foot to two and a half feet of total snowfall out of this system. it's likely to add up to even more than that, a little bit of an additional snowfall on monday with yet another rainmaker headed for the bay area. a look at the total rainfall amounts that we expect over the course of the next few days. this factors in what has fallen, so the north bay, picking up anywhere from 2 to 3 inches of additional rain. even more than that in some of the higher elevations for san francisco and oakland. a little bit less than some of the rain shower spots in the trivalley. of course, a little bit more in the santa cruz mountains. it's the pattern that we expect. flood watch continues for the north bay as we head a
