mr. smith: president carter? mr. carter: i mentioned the radical departure of governor reagan from the principles or ideals of historical perspective of his own party. i don't think that can be better illustrated than in the case of guaranteeing women equal rights under the constitution of our nation. for 40 years, the republican party platforms called for guaranteeing women equal rights with a constitutional amendment. six predecessors of mine who served in the oval office called for this guarantee of women's rights. governor reagan and his new republican party have departed from this commitment, a very severe blow to the opportunity for women to finally correct discrimination under which they have suffered. when a man and a women do the same amount of work, a man gets paid $1.00, a women only gets paid 59 cents. and the equal rights amendment only says that equality of rights shall not be abridged for women by the federal government or by the state governments. that is all it says a simple guarantee of equality of o

mr. frankel, a question for governor carter. mr. frankel: governor carter, if the price of gaining influence among the arabs is closing our eyes a little bit to their boycott against israel, how would you handle that? mr. carter: i believe that the boycott of american businesses by the arab countries because those businesses trade with israel or because they have american jews who are owners or directors in the company is an absolute disgrace. this is the first time that i've remember in the history of our country when we've let a foreign country circumvent or change our bill of rights. i'll do everything i can as president to stop the boycott of american businesses by the arab countries. it's not a matter of diplomacy or trade with me. it's a matter of morality. and i don't believe that arab countries will pursue it when we have a strong president who will protect the integrity of our country, the commitment of our constitution and bill of rights and protect people in this country who happen to be jews. it may later be catholics, it

he and mrs. carterpent four decades volunteering with habitat for humanity, the international nonprofit provides affordable housing for families in need. habitat for humanity says it joins the world in mourning. the organization's ceo described president carter's outsize impact. >> if you say habitat for humanity in word association, the first thing most people would say is jimmy carter. so they were so connected, and i think their personal example and the way they, um, loved so much the work and the connections to the families who are purchasing the homes inspired so many. and then the sustained commitment was so extraordinary. so, you know, in 1984, habitat was a tiny organization. and when president and mrs. carter rode that bus up to new york city and slept in a church basement to rehab a tenement building on the lower east side of manhattan, that's when the world found out about habitat and that started a 35 year run of every year, going somewhere in the world to build homes alongside families in n

mrs. carter, there are several first ladies still living.are is there a sorority of first ladies in a sense. well, i had a good relationship with betty ford and with lady bird. as long as she was alive. but that's about it. i don't think there's never been a real we see each other at the event and at the library dedication. so in the new what new first ladies. but there's never been that, uh, closeness that, that i had with betty ford and lady bird when you were first lady, you had a weekly luncheon with your husband and would attend cabinet meetings. what was the purpose of that? well, i had a luncheon with jimmy. there were always things i ed to ask and some of it was about the family and the finances and things that going on back home. um, but also talked about issues. it was, i would say it was more family and personal things that were going on. um, but it gave us time to do that. but almost every after we were there until about august, um, jimmy stayed at the, um, oval office a good bit in the daytime. he didn't go, didn't go back much
