and mark halperin political analyst for "time" and msnbc. so, first to you, chris, let's talk about the state of the race. >> well, we're almost there, andrea. i think the state of the race is that president obama retains a -- this has been the case for a while now. he retains more paths to 270 electoral votes than does mitt romney. mitt romney, i think we're actually going to know relatively early how this is headed because florida, virginia and ohio are all closing on the early end of the evening. i really do think for mitt romney's math to be plausible he needs florida, he needs virginia and he probably needs ohio too. if barack obama wins one of the three, i think it's going to be tough but not impossible for mitt romney as the map moves west ward. if he wins two of the three, if one is florida, it's you could probably make it add up to 270 with the states left, but it would not be good for mitt romney. >> what you're seeing from the ground, you were all over ohio with both of the candidates, in virginia for the incredible rally with bil

you're watching msnbc, the place for politics. let's go straight to nbc news correspondent kerry sanders from miami. the election is finally put to rest. >> folks in florida have been wondering what is going on. the numbers show that the state did tilt to obama. he got 50% of the vote. romney took 49.1% of the vote. clearly, florida remains a battleground state. the question is, why did this take so long? part of the fact is that early voting was cut back by the republican governor rick scott. if you take a look at the newspaper here, this is the tampa bay times headlines. it says, no apology from scott. he went on to say, what i'm trying to do is improve the way government works. i believe in efficiency. i believe every vote has to count. i want to have a good process that people feel good about. well, the people are not feeling good because in many cases they felt that the governor made the decision to push back the number of days from 14 to 8, meaning that there were fewer days for early voting, meaning that people couldn't get

msnbc political analysts, founder of the cook report, our bible indeed. let me start with you, charlie, a couple days out where do you see the state of the race? >> well, i think that you've got about -- i don't buy the michigan nevada pennsylvania wisconsin are still in play. i don't think those outcomes are still in doubt. i think obama will win those four. we're really down to the last seven states and their 94 electoral votes and obama needs 17 out of 94 and romney needs 79 out of 94. when one candidate only needs 18% of the electoral votes in the toss up states and the other 84%, the odds are a lot better for the candidate that needs the 18% and that's president obama. so, i think the popular vote -- i think it's tied. i think we could easily see romney win the popular vote, but the electoral college i still think -- i would put a finger on the scale towards president obama. >> chris cizilla, if president obama wins, how much of an impact do you think that the hurricane and his leadership role, being seen with chris christie, you know, showing up wit

the hub of the 2012 election for msnbc.tions commission as of today, there are 417 people running for president. of course, it's likely only a handful will be on your ballot. the list reveals that president obama filed his paperwork a week before mitt romney did in april of last year. more than 315 others filed before mr. obama and romney including 35 who filed before 2010. interesting stat there is. in 2008 my next guest was a strong supporter of president obama but now his support is waivering. he makes as much of an argument for mitt romney as he does for barack obama. former governor wilder, it's good to see you. i do have some questions for you. i have to say as i read it, it seemed like it was lacking on the op part, if you know what i mean. you write that the election is the most important of our lifetime, but you don't make a call for either candidate. so who will you support? >> i thought i did. i thought i laid out the issues. i thought i laid out why i thought people should be concerned with issues and how they s
