to msu police, there is no longer a threat on campus, and no need to shelter in place. certainly, terrifying moments throughout the evening, as word of the shooting spread throughout campus, and law enforcement immediately spread out among the facilities, or to make sure everybody was safe, and it is okay, as they continue to search for the suspect, which we now know has been found dead. i want to turn to maureen holiday, who's a reporter with our nbc affiliate, wilx in michigan, she was at the press conference. all right maria, and for those joining us this hour, tell us what you've, heard and what we know in this hour. >> yeah, francis, what we're working on right now, police are trying to figure out the suspects affiliation with the university, like he said, he was found with the self inflicted gunshot wound, they died from outside of campus. police are working to determine his motive behind this shooting. police are describing this whole situation as a nightmare. like you said earlier, there is no active threat, and shelter in place is now over, that means yours can

want to bring in andrew miller, thomas miller, and 22-year-old student at msu.was a certain in the union building when the shooting took place. andrew, i appreciate your being with us. talk to us about your experience, first of all, seething. >> hi, so i was in union for club meeting the started 7:00, and went to a, 30 just walked out of the building and a 30, and everything the lounge is empty, and it was one guy walking towards me, it panic looked on his, face and he said there's a shooter, so i got my other coworker and we went running back into the room, and i told everybody there's a shooter, talking, cover travel lights in clothes adores, and we sat there for what felt like an eternity. it could've been 15 or 20 minutes, just kind some news noises, seem flashing lights, and police shouted sided, or i called 9-1-1, so they know we are down there, and i send somebody to come get us, and we got exported, out hands up, and the rifles that and everything. and yeah, it is pretty tense. >> andrew, i can still hear in your voice that you really sound like you are

i wasn't msu student myself during the virginia tech massacre.hat tragedy in april of 2007. so, from 2007 and virginia tech to all of the successive mass shootings and now the one that's his closest to home on our own very campus, it has been a problem that's been going on the last generation from when i was in school. and now it's passed down to the next generation. there are students from oxford high school in oakland county michigan who survived that shooting and now can survive another student at michigan state university. so, we cannot perpetually live and grief without action. and that's what we are in charge to do in the michigan state senate. >> to that point, senator. last week you tweeted about the michigan legislature saying democrats have a new majority with the will to act on the issue of gun violence. are you really optimistic about the real change that is coming and michigan? is it possible? >> oh, absolutely with our new democratic majority. in that tweet, i shared a video from after you've all day. i was fed up because six months

we just learned within the past hour all were students at msu. police plan to release their identities of those killed later today. >> now, within the last hour we actually heard from michigan's governor and other state leaders, all expressing heartbreak and calling for action. medical leaders at that news conference, they say that all of the five surviving victims are in critical condition this morning. here is a live look on campus where classes and events are all canceled over the next two days. police released two images of that suspect during the news conference. we learned that he is 43-year-old anthony mcrae. police say that he died from self-inflicted gunshot wounds following a confrontation with police. he was not affiliated with msu. all of this unfolded around 8:30 last night. police say mcrae began firing in two campus buildings. >> the first, berkey hall, an academic building, the second was a student union. we learned overnight both were unlocked and open to the public at the time. following the shooting, investigators say the gunma

i know you got your masters from msu.epresent in the minds of michigan residents? >> michigan state is classic michigan. students from all across the state that go there to get their education. we take great pride in all of our universities. but when you have michigan state football weekend it often brings people from various backgrounds together. so to have this absolutely horrific act as this murderous attack on students really hit home to so many people across the state. and to think you have students who were shot indiscriminately and to have a shooter go across the campus terrorizing students, this is after we had a previous mass shooting at oxford high school, which you mentioned in the opening. this should never have happened, and certainly i feel great sadness. and the people, where the victims, who are suffering from this are in my heart and in the hearts of everybody in michigan. but there is an awful lot of anger as well. this has got to stop. certainly, our hearts go out to the folks who are suffering right no

they feed off of each other's infamy. >> the msu campus, it's like 5300 acres. there's 400 buildings. a college campus like that, really any college campus is a very difficult area to secure, something that large. >> it's basically impossible to secure something that large against the instance of a mass shooter. you'd have to essentially turn the entire place into what amounts to a prison. a locked down kind of closed off area which is not, you know, not some conditions we'd ever want to subject our college students to. the fact is, if someone decides to arm themselves and go and commit a mass shooting, you're behind the curve as law enforcement. the law enforcement response last night appears to have been textbook by just about every measure and yet they always arrive after the shooting has taken place. it is almost impossible unless you just happen to be in the room that the mass shooter chooses to enter it's almost impossible for law enforcement to be there soon enough to stop the killing? >> yeah, andrew mccabe, i appreciate talking to you, though. i wish we

people have been in multiple mass shootings, we heard from the folks at msu.rd to say, but my guess is that we are becoming desensitized to it. as much as we want change, there's this other understanding that change is difficult if not impossible, particularly this congress. the assault weapons ban was 30 years ago, just about. it's highly unlikely we'll get anything close to that in the near future. remember columbine in 1999, we thought that was this defining moment and now we're still talking about msu, the buffalo shooter was just sentenced. today lucy macbeth is celebrating her son who would have celebrated his birthday today, though he was shot by an individual who thought the music that his friends were playing was too loud. we have a gun culture in this country that is unshakable and unmovable. the one thing that i will say that may change the dynamic, because we've talked about this before is that it's affecting the suburbs more than it ever did. it's not being racialized and urbanized in a way that it used to be, and it's children, more and more chil

all eight victims were msu students.nt later today. these are students just going to college, in class in one case in the union hall in another. then we also learned the name of the actual suspect, the 43-year-old suspect. his name is anthony duane mccray. a search warrant was executed of a residence connected to mr. mccray. they said a search warrant was executed. one thing they emphasize is there's no motive. they have no understanding of the motive. mccray was not a student or a member of the staff. he had no affiliation to the university. right now you have members of this community waking up to another incidence of senseless gun violence. >> the chief of campus police saying, quote, we have absolutely no idea what the motive was. it's only been 12 hours. this all played out over the course of three hours. just before 8:30 they got reports of the first shots, and this ended at 11:35 p.m. eastern time at a house there in lansing. do we have any information about how they tracked him down? >> reporter: we got a much be

and msu, there were kids there who have experienced mass shootings twice in their life.es that say about the debate here today? >> well, by my count there were at least four students at msu who were survivors of previous mass shootings. would be from sandy hook and three from oxford high school in 2021. and so i didn't degreegrow up w this, you know. i think the generation after columbine, if you were in school at this time, this is being becoming your normal. and now tragically these school shootings. we have a limited window where this becomes normal for kids and they just develop a callus and it just becomes something that they have to deal with. for people who at andidn't grow with that, that is a lot to swallow. so now you have people who have been through multiple mass shootings. and in america we have at least two dozen days throughout the year, there are anniversaries of more than one mass shooting. so you can see how this is accelerating and becoming the new normal for kids. >> and that begs the question why and how do we fix it and that is a longer conversation

let's bring in cnn's miguel marquez near the msu campus. in the classroom where the shootings took place. >> reporter: yeah, this is a guy who was teaching a cuban literature course to 45 students in that classroom on monday night. you know, police also saying that the shooter, they believe they have a built of an idea of why he did this saying that they -- in his note he was upset about being asked to leave or thrown out of several businesses in the area but it's still unclear why he went to msu, why he went to this specific class, but this professor gives us a pretty unique look at one of those many, many mass shootings in this country. here's what happened when that shooter walked into classroom 114 in msu's berkey hall. >> and it was so horrible because when you see someone who is totally masked, you don't see their face, you don't see their hands, you don't see -- it was like seeing a robot. it was like seeing something not human standing there. i mean he shot at least 15 shots. one after the other, one after the other and at that mome
