one line here, robert mueller and leaking and lying james comey are best friends, just one of many muelleronflicts of interest. he says, will his conflicts of interests be listed in the top of his republicans-only report. he is clearly going after mueller in a brutal way. >> that's right, wolf. i think as everybody has been observing all day long, and he has been doing this for months now, wolf, he is obviously trying to soften up the perception among his supporters as to what robert mueller's motives are. he's been referring to 12 angry democrats and so on working on the mueller team, making very personal comments about members of robert mueller's team. this is obviously all designed to weigh on the minds of his supporters and to sort of damage and soften up the way that his supporters look at the special counsel, overlooking -- the president has overlooked on numerous occasions robert mueller is a republican and so on. so i think, wolf, this is all part of a public relations strategy that the president has been in the middle of for many, many months now. i do think it is odd to see this

laid mueller.manafort -- played mueller. manafort looks like it went along to basically switched sides begin in the middle of this investigation. consider this, this is sort of the wonderful way, sort of side quarterbacking. mueller got this plea right after manafort was handed his head in virginia. he was not only convicted of multiple accounts come he came within one vote of basically being swept, the table being sucked up all counts, that he would've been convicted and everything picky was headed to d.c. where it was a far worse trial waiting for him when he was looking really horrific allegations, all of which seem quite supported by the prosecution. he then flips with mueller, avoid to those convictions, pleads to ten counts and then sits there with mueller for months, right? when the critical moment comes he basically bolts. i know many people believe that trump is dangling out a pardon for them. so in the end manafort may have played mueller. we don't know. but what mueller is going to do is

i'm going to put up these quotes from the mueller -- this is the mueller sentencing memo. cohen provided the special counsel with useful information with certain russian matters by virtue of his regular contact with company executives in the campaign, company is always trump organization in this case. cohen described the circumstances of preparing and circulating his response to the congressional inquiries while continuing to set responsibility for those false statements contained. we know the obstruction of justice charge is being pursued and pursued it looks like rather aggressively. and there's a lot more russia contact. >> it also makes that don junior trump tower meeting and statements to create some sort of false narrative there to seem a little small ball because this is actually very serious. we don't know who, but they circulated this to who was involved in that, but clearly, there's a history of willingness to do things like that among people in trump's orbit. the other thing, chuck, that stood out to me, this was the first mention that i can recall where mueller

and agreed to cooperate with mueller and his investigation. and today's filing, or it will be tonight's filing, when and if it comes, is expected to give us a better idea of the extent to which flynn has cooperated with that russia investigation, specifically what kind of information flynn may have given them. robert mueller has delayed sentencing of michael flynn several times over the past year, again and again and again. and it's led many to wonder if flynn's cooperation was, indeed, ongoing. meanwhile, you'll remember, trump's former lawyer michael cohen has pleaded guilty to crimes in both the southern district of new york's campaign, and the special counsel's russia investigation, just last week. trump's former campaign manager paul manafort, after being convicted of financial crimes in federal court, appears to have basically pretended to cooperate with robert mueller when he was actually relaying information to trump's lawyers, their cooperation agreement blew up and now he will face sentencings on friday with mueller expecting to also

mueller is just following the book. we don't really know, and there's obviously a number of speculations as to what it could be, but we don't know. >> one of the big headlines from it was that robert mueller is requesting no prisontimefor michael flynn. that came as a surprise to many people. here's a little portion of that -- of the document in which he explains because of the early cooperation. his early cooperation, meaning flynn's, was particularly value because he was one of the first people with long-term and firsthand insight regarding what was under investigation, and his decision to plead guilty likely influenced others to cooperate. what did you see in the no prison time request? >> i think two things i see. number one, the charge that flynn is pleading to only carried zero to six months in prison, so there's not that surprising that there's a slow recommendation, and it's because mueller allowed flynn to plead guilty to only one charge last year. there was a charge bargain that was struck then, because it wa

mueller with everything else. he has perhaps been more helpful with mueller, which is why mueller is willing to be more lenient, but he really hasn't given enough or in the opinion of the southern district enough to justify a significant reduction in penalty. and so you see these two branches of the justice department, which are all under the executive branch, taking slightly different positions. that's not bad. that's reassuring. that's saying people are exercising their independent judgment based upon the specific case before them, which is different, and based upon the facts before them, which is different. so that should be reassuring, that all this bullying of the justice department has really amounted to nothing because people are doing their job and proceeding. i think the third point we should have is that it is going to be impossible i think at this point to either withhold a final report if we ever have a final report and/or fire mueller, because what he is doing and what the southern district is doing a

special counsel robert mueller also believes the trump tower project in moscow is relevant to russia's 2016 meddling. and it is not just a matter of cohen lying about the time line. all of this happening as mueller says former trump campaign chairman paul manafort lied about five major things, including how long he stayed in touch with white house officials after he was indicted. mueller indicating communication was going on as recently as this year. let's get to it. jeremy herb on the president being implicated in two crimes. what more can you tell us? >> this is one of the most revealing windows we had into what the mueller investigation has uncovered. what's most significant is that for the first time, they said trump directed cohen to direct crimes from the campaign when he asked women not to speak about alleged affairs with trump. what does this mean for the president? trump tweeted that the filing clears the president. he is implicated in crimes that cohen committed. doj hasn't accused the president of a crime, said a sitting presiden

to testify to the integrity of robert mueller., republicans have been a part of this year-long investigation this republican panel has been doing. you remember lisa struck and daniel page, senior officials in charge of the e-mail russia campaign. jim comey told lawmakers if he was aware of the tech messages they were exchanging, which did demonstrate the appearance of bias, he would have removed them from that investigation earlier. these were the initial headlines out of 230 some odd pages we are beginning to look through. >> our speed reader, susan del percio, msnpc political analyst. some good talk points if you are looking at the transcript of mueller because he is saying this guy is great? >> we would have known if there was anything mind blowing, yesterday it would have leaked, yes, there is certainly good information to come out of it. i don't think there is anything so explosive there. i think this has been more or less an exercise and is for republicans to do a casting call for donald trump. i think they may be making the

so two things here in this mueller document. first thing is that they say that the information michael cohen has provided has been credible and consistent with other evidence that they have obtained. that is the mueller team in their ongoing investigation. clearly a very important part of this investigation. they have other corroboration outside of what michael cohen has already told them. and the other thing what they say is essentially that they believe the court should give michael cohen consideration because of his efforts and because he basically has helped them with their investigation. and that's essentially how they end their memo regarding michael cohen. so we see a kind of different kind of take. you have the southern district of new york here basically asking for this substantial jail time. and you see the special counsel's office here essentially saying, no, michae cohen tried to do right. he tried to fix things. and therefore, that should be considered in his sentencing. so that is helpful for michael cohen. >> help

what giuliani is told by manafort's team is they believe that mueller's team, in fact mueller's team has told manafort that he doesn't believe what manafort is saying to the special counsel's investigators about president trump. that is a big deal in any case, but particularly as we are potentially just hours away from this really important filing that the mueller team is going to put forward in a court to explain why this plea deal that they had fell apart. generally what we've seen in these filings is evidence and explanations of what they believe and don't believe that these witnesses or these accused individuals are saying. in the case of manafort, what giuliani says is that the mueller team is making clear to his attorneys is they don't believe what manafort a saying, that the president did not know at the time about the 2016 trump tower meeting. there are other things that the mueller team think that paul manafort is just lying about. but as it relates to the president of the united states, that is a key issue. so we're going to be waiting to look at this file and look at a lot

here is mueller's so-called biggy. filing says that michael cohen provided crucial information about new contacts between the trump campaign and the russians, including outreach as early as november, 2015. joining us, mercedes colwin, and curt selector. the filing reads 2015. cohen got contact information about a russian national that could offer campaign synergy on a government level. the person was talking about a possible meeting between mr. trump and mr. putin. but here is the thing. that meeting never happened. it never happened. and cone never even reached out to arrange a meeting. we live in a global economy. and this is disinformation. speech that wasn't acted on. why was mueller wasting taxpayer dollars suggesting a level of guilt because someone has a contact in their rolodex. >> i don't think the special counsel has much interest in cone. he came in with a recommendation he get jail time. i think cohen misrepresent and overstated we had. and was the only person saying he had anything at all other that mainst

but keep in mind robert mueller has other information here.e has other witnesses who are giving information under sworn testimony. he has other -- at least the possibility of intercepted communications, the possibility of twitter messages, direct messages between roger stone and wikileaks. so the question is what is the evidence, does it make roger stone a liar here on these claims. of course, the big picture question is was there ever communication between stone and trump in advance of those releases. so roger stone is central to the continuing question as to whether there was collusion during the campaign between russia, who stole the e-mails, and wikileaks who then released the e-mails. as mueller is doing his investigation, you have the senate doing its own investigation and that's the root of today's news because the senate demanded from him any records of communication between stone and wikileaks. now stone responding today, saying he's not going to give that testimony. he's not going to give those records. i'm going to quote from his la

that mueller would get all the information they need. mueller's team, i should say. and then maintain the president's lawyers that they don't need to interview the president because they have all of these documents, thousands of documents. they've interviewed all of these witnesses and now they've answered his questions. they've maintained that mueller has everything that he needs. so i do think it was hopeful on the president's legal team's part that this would be the end of it or nearing the end. what is clear is that certainly for mueller and his team, the idea of interviewing the president is not a settled matter. >> okay. and then you alluded to this before. it's one thing to want to talk to the president. it's a completely different thing if you are going to take action to try to force it to happen. any sense that the special counsel will push beyond just asking nicely? >> well, here's the thing. we know last year, as i mentioned, robert mueller threatened to the president's attorneys to subpoena the president for an interview when negotiations got very tense.

robert mueller is not melting down. robert mueller and his team know what a crime looks like when they see it. the president's tweets today and many other of his tweets will be in mueller's final reports on the criminal conduct of the president of the united states. and then they should be incorporated in what should be article i of the articles of impeachment voted on in the house judiciary committee against president trump. and that should happen when the democrats take control of the house of representatives next year. much more is at stake here than just the trump presidency. if the congress allows the president to publicly commit the crime of witness tampering in investigations of the president, then they are allowing every future president to do exactly the same thing. tonight michael is reporting in yahoo news that robert mueller is at the stage of, quote, tying up loose ends. special counsel robert mueller's prosecutors have told defense lawyers in recent weeks that they are tying up loose ends in their investig

that is the filing from the mueller team about michael cohen's cooperation and a filing from mueller's team about, we call it shorthand. paul manafort's lies. what could the president have gleaned about what is coming that might explain something that counts as unhinged even for this president in his early morning missives? >> that's the question that we're all waiting to have answered today, right? with bated breath. the most interesting thing that i'll be looking for is whether we'll have a repetition of the dedaction from the flynn memo earlier this week. mueller's team uses redaction to keep ongoing investigations from going into the public domain. and prosecutors do that because when the focus of your investigation becomes too public, it can really become impossible to get to the truth. if we see a lot of redaction in these two pleadings later today, we'll know that there continue to be ongoing matters. they'll likely be material and significant. and although it's possible they'll involve cohen's personal businesses, given everything else that's on the table, it's equally likely t

mueller knows? >> it indicates that mueller knows a lot.e filings, the ones from yesterday and earlier in this week, there is so much information that is redacted. i think it was something like 65 lines of redacted information that show that mueller -- we know a lot that mueller is looking at now but there's even more that we don't know. the ties with or the contact with russian operatives is a big thing obviously that mueller is looking at and for manafort, it's very troubling because he had entered into this plea deal with mueller. he had said that he was going to be on the team and work with him. mueller is here, saying you lied, you are no longer our team and just referring back to the former prosecutor i was talking to yesterday, it seems kind of he's wiping his hands of mueller and sending a message to perhaps cohen and anybody else who wants to help out with the investigation, work with the prosecution or work with the special counsel, that they need to be truthful or else they could suffer similar penalties. arthel: before i get to
