mitch mcconnell, there was markwayne mullin, as you mentioned, thom tillis. he sits on the senate judiciary committee and also the incoming freshman senator tim sheehy uh, you know yes, perhaps they'll fold and fold and they'll back. what trump wants. but this is a potentially a 53, 47 senate. so four senators could be enough to scuttle this nomination. >> yeah, absolutely. and if it does, that's a problem of gates's own making. but i mean, i think back to early parts of last year, i was at cpac right after the big house speaker fight where gates made the speech about the fbi and atf coming to heel. and i think back from then to now, and his wing of the party has won. i mean, gaetz marjorie taylor greene, like, whoever you want to call it, who kind of made that play against the establishment congressional republicans who doubled down with donald trump at the time when some other people kind of waffled on him initially. they are being rewarded in this moment. and i think for a lot of those republican senators they are torn between that kind of personal dislike

>> i mean, it's ignorance is more ignorance coming from markwayne mullin. i believe that the fact is we need to figure out where these threats are coming from before you go out blaming one side or another. um, we have no idea who is perpetrating these threats. i can say just resoundingly just as the president of the united states has said, that these threats have no place in our discourse, have no place in our democracy. um and, and need to be stamped out but to come on tv, to come on national tv or fox news or anywhere else and say that your group is doing x, y or z without knowing who is doing what is irresponsible and what what what he's talking about is the same type of rhetoric that needs to stop. we go back and forth with this. both sides of what rhetoric needs to be done this time, and who said what when where, how. but as a united states senator, you have to have some responsibility and let's at least figure out where these are coming from. let's figure out who's perpetrating them. let's let law enforcement do their job, and let's let the president

you could just see how pained markwayne mullin was at the thought of having to vote for matt gates. >> yeah, he clearly wants this ethics report to come out so that maybe he's the whole nomination is withdrawn, but do the work for him. i mean, that's what it seems like. i want to turn to another trump pick, pete hegseth. he is the nominee for defense secretary cnn is reporting he paid a woman who accused him of sexual assault in 2017 and included a confidentiality clause. pete hegseth denies the allegation of sexual assault says he settled with the woman to avoid bad publicity. he has not been charged criminally or civilly. his attorney characterized the incident as a, quote, consensual sexual encounter and said hegseth felt that he was a victim of blackmail. sources say the trump transition team was caught off guard by the allegation, and that he was never fully vetted by an outside firm. i mean, just going back to what you were saying about the whole tone and tenor of his rallies and of kind of the maga universe wanting people like them to get into these very senior positions in dep
