and joining me live nbc news senior editor mark murray.have been talking about the midterms and whether or not the health care law would be something that would hold down the democrats or put those who have their feet close to the fire right into it, and this is maybe certainly some good news, an kconfetti falling down for some democrats i would guess. >> well, i would not go that far, tamron. and certainly, some of the democrats running for re-election in red states like arkansas and louisiana, this report is not going to impact the popularity of the health care law there, but what it does do is to equip the democrats and particularly new hhs secretary nominee sylvia matthews burwell with information when she is getting the tough questions from the senate republicans in the confirmation hearings to say, hey, you are mentioning all of the numbers ta you want to cite, and let me mention some cbo numbers that have the health care law in a more favorable law. but let's step back, and the health care law has a couple of good weeks and you have

nbc's senior political director, mark murray, is here with this morning's first read.ark, this was a fascinating development, the cbo report. democrats pouncing on it, really pumping it up. one thing that struck me is while it was certain lly positi news for democrats, it's so wonky, it can get lost in the minutia. those are difficult numbers to explain and a difficult premise to explain. sort of overall reduction of a deficit in a 30-second attack ad when you're getting all this outside money being poured on that the health care law is the destruction of freedom in the united states. >> this entire health care debate, everyone has their own set of statistics they can point to and say i can point to these things to make my case premiums are skyrocketing. but if you're a democrat and you say the congressional budget office says premiums are lower than expected. i think it's important to take a step back and look at the health care law. it's probably enjoying its west two weeks since its passage in 2010. you had at the beginning of the month the news 7.5 million american

joining me now nbc news senior political editor mark murray.o these numbers a little bit because they are actually really fascinating. when you look at barack obama's coalition, 93% of the african-american vote, 73% of the asian-american vote, 71% or so among latinos, 60% of 18 to 29-year-olds and 54% of female voters. for republicans is there any part of that coalition that you see them making progress as of now? >> well, it depends on who the candidates are, and, joy, i'm a big believer that candidates still matter, and candidates are the ones who end up defining the political party and what it stands for and then sometimes the demographics break either way, and so republicans who really want to grow the coalition, some of them are looking at jeb bush because of his stance on immigration reform and theb the ability to maybe get to the levels that his brother got in 2000 and 2004 with latinos. there's a lock at someone like marco rubio to be able to do the trick as well. rand paul says it comes down to talking more about libertarianism and abo

. >> joining me now, mark murray, maria teresa kumar and alfonso aguilar. thanks all for being here. mosc mark, i want to start with you. just set the political landscape right now as it relates to immigration. what do you make of house speaker john boehner's comments? does it suggest that there could be a renewed push for immigration in the house? >> all of those things that you just mentioned does suggest that maybe there is a little bit of a pulse to get immigration reform done, as the clock is ticking on this particular congress, and right before the midterm season. but kristen, there are some structural things, particularly coming from the republican party that cast a little doubt on that. one, most house republicans have constituents where there are very small numbers of latino constituents. there's no incentive to get immigration reform done then. then you look at the fact that we are in the midst of an election season right now and this is an issue that divides the republican party. the republican party wants to talk about issues that unite them, no
