joining us now, nbc news. tom costello. tom, that aircraft that they identified as the american airlines aircraft. what do we know about the seating capacity of that plane? >> well, this is if it's a typical a typical crj, a regional jet. and this is made by bombardier and is flying on behalf of american airlines, 50 to 100 people generally is what those will will take. as you know, it's a single aisle flight and it flies into the smaller airports, generally around the country. right. you'd be leaving from reagan or you'd be going into reagan, but you'd be going from smaller airports. in other words, you wouldn't necessarily fly that plane from, you know, jfk airport, for example, or from this is going to be a smaller airport or airplane, i should say, coming in and handling this kind of regional jet service. and then, of course, the question is, what exactly was happening with this sikorsky h-60 helicopter over the river? it appears they collided over the potomac river, and the river is right off of that runway that you me

jay gray, nbc news, national airport. now, nbc news has learned about some of the circumstances that happened before that mid-air collision. usually, there is an air traffic controller who handles the commercial aircrafts, and another that handles helicopters at that busy reagan national airport. but last night, only one controller was handling both. here's nbc's senior white house correspondent, gabe gutierrez. there were not two. there was just one air traffic controller for both the jet and the helicopter. now, we should point out that under faa safety standards, that is acceptable. it is perhaps not ideal, but it is acceptable. but that is something that is factoring into the ntsb investigation tonight coming up. nightly news will have more from about this midair collision. lester holt will anchor team coverage from the potomac river at 630 here in the bay area. an airport on the peninsula could soon lose its air traffic controllers. we're talking about the san carlos airport. the air traffic controllers are locked in

meanwhile, nbc news.ering pulling funding from the tsa to make up for a budget shortfall facing ice. joining us now with more on that report. nbc news homeland security correspondent julia ainsley. julia, good morning. what more can you tell us on this? >> well, look, ice is facing a 230 million, $230 million shortfall because they are obviously burning more than they can right now. that shortfall was even under the biden administration. and they actually did an estimate about how much it costs to deport one migrant from arrest to the time they're on the plane. it's about $10,500. so you can do the math. trump has promised to deport millions of millions a year. basically, they need more money. they're trying to ramp up detention space so they have some place to hold them. but in the end, they're going to have to really ask congress for more money. but the low hanging fruit right now is to reprogram. so they're looking at pulling from tsa. that might get some backlash if people are looking at longer travel
