nbc news has now confirmed that there were six people on board that plane. so that is new information we're sharing with all of you. i'm going to bring back in katie higgins, who is the former board member at the ntsb. and joining us is also randy babbitt, who is a former administrator of the federal aviation administration. randy, let me start with you were obviously and katie gave us a wonderful warning earlier, which i could not echo more. we need to wait for the investigators to do their jobs, and they do an excellent job. but as we're watching this, we know a few things from the faa. we know just from nbc news confirmed six people were on board. we know that at least three homes and multiple vehicles were struck. we know there's a perimeter. we know that there's been explosions as you're watching this, what what is your takeaway from what you're seeing in the scenes? >> well, it's a high degree of speculation because, you know, we're kind of lean on factual data, but visibility certainly comes into play. it was a low visibility takeoff. the other possibi

christie smith, nbc, bay area news. well, it turns out that california has had a significant decline in its death row population in 2024. that's according to a new report released this week by the nonprofit death penalty project. the death row population drop was lower than any other state in the u.s. last year. in total, death row dreased by 63 people with no executions. 13 of those died inmates while in prison, while the rest were either resentenced due to changes in state law. one person exonerate. in the past six years, california has sentenced 20 convicted murderers to death. an average of three people a year. today, a guilty plea from a man accused of flying a drone over the palisades fire. that drone then collided with a firefighting plane. prosecutors say peter aikman launched the drone from a parking structure to survey the damage from the fire. a couple of weeks ago. that's when he lost sight of the drone. that drone collided with the wing of a super scooper aircraft. investigators hope it serves as a warning

nbc news is reporting this.st doj leadership, donald trump's justice department started purging rank and file prosecutors who brought violent january 6th rioters to justice. their termination letter quoted trump's comments that the cases represented, quote, a grave national injustice, end quote. at least 174 of the nearly 1600 rioters whose cases or sentences trump terminated had been charged with assaulting police with dangerous weapons. the acting deputy attorney general, emil beauvais, who served as trump's personal criminal defense attorney, sent a memo to justice department leaders ordering the purge of january 6th. prosecutors revealing that the former president biden gave these prosecutors permanent status following trump's election. in his memo, beauvais called their employment subversive for federal prosecutors. the fbi agents association disagreed, denouncing the purge as outrageous, writing, quote, if true, these outrageous actions by acting officials are fundamentally at odds with the law enforcement

but first, we want to start with new information coming out just a short time ago from that other plane crash in a neighborhood in philadelphia last night. nbc's maya eaglin is near the site of the crash. maya officials just released some critical new details. what are they and what are you learning? >> yeah. christina, we just heard from hero and mayor parker just a short while ago. they said that in addition to the six people who were on that plane that died, one other person who was on the ground and actually in their car also passed away. we know that at least 19 other people have also been injured in this incident, and they said that number is pretty fluid because this is an ongoing investigation. that number could rise in the next few days. just to recap here, this happened yesterday around 630. it was a jet rescue air medical ambulanc. on board that plane was a miner who was receiving medical care. she was actually from mexico and came here to philadelphia. she was with her mom. there were four other crew members. and when that explosion and the crash happened, there was a lot of debris. so a lot of the video you're seeing are some of t

joining me now is the nbc news correspondent maya eaglin in philadelphia.to you. now that the sun is up, what are you seeing and what's happening there? >> hey, ali. so actually, right now, mayor parker is speaking at a press conference. we know from our team members over there. they just announced that one other person has been killed in this accident. that person was actually in a car. and they also just announced that at least 19 people have been injured. we're going to get more details from our team members who are listening in on that press conference. but again, as you mentioned, this was a medevac. there were six people on this plane. one of them was a minor who came to philadelphia for a life saving surgery. and so all the crews out here today are trying to put together what happened and why did the plane go down and cause so much destruction? ali. >> maya, just to be clear, for people who don't know it, you are literally at one of the busiest intersections in all of philadelphia. the roosevelt boulevard is like about 12 lanes or something like that

let's bring in tom costello, nbc news senior correspondent covering aviation.this crash? >> joy. >> we have a major. >> story developing. >> unfortunately, it is yet another plane crash happening at this hour. it is in. north philadelphia, not far from the roosevelt mall. >> the faa just. >> releasing a status update. >> a learjet 55. >> says the. >> faa crashed around 6:30 p.m. >> local time. >> on friday after departing. northeast philadelphia airport. there were two people on board. the plane. >> was en route to. >> springfield-branson national airport. the faa. >> and. >> ntsb will investigate. our affiliate in philadelphia is reporting that this was a medevac plane of some sort. again, the faa saying it was a learjet. it went down. and apparently, according to our affiliate, there are reports of multiple houses that may have been hit in this. in this crash, the philly pd, philly fire department all responding, as you would expect. and the governor is saying that he has spoken as well with the mayor and the team is coordinating for all state resources to he
