professor nelson, thank you for joining us. how does the university of illinois go about screening the persons they decide to choose for the address? >> what we do -- my role is that the faculty center and we focus on the commencement speakers who are going to receive an honorary degree, which is the case across the country that a commencement speaker receives an honorary degree. the faculty senate has about 200 faculty members who are elected. perhaps 150 show up at a given meeting. speakers arement proposed, we each get a copy of as well as a letter of whoever has proposed them considers them worthy of the speech. in a meeting, we discussed those possible people. on a number of occasions, we advise that the university not go forward with a particular person. in fact, just this year we recommended against two people. they were not used. i will obviously not give their names. when the applications are given out to 150 faculty members, that gives you a pretty good test of whether they are likely to be a problem with other people
