the new hampshire primary, five of seven times.16, donald trump, of course, lost in iowa, but was able to regain his hold on the republican nomination by winning in new hampshire. so to me looking at the republican side, new hampshire gives you a better idea than iowa. >> you wanted to look at this year from two different angles. ideology and demographics in terms of how the front-runner is doing in the republican side and donald trump, again, looking amongst the group. when it comes to ideology, why do you think trump is weaker in iowa this year? >> it comes down to, get this, it comes down to what we see is that the groups that trump does best amongst, look at that, very conservative, they are far bigger portion of the republican electorate in iowa than they are in new hampshire. trump gets weaker as you go more toward the middle of the republican electorate. he only leads that group by 14 points over ron desantis, moderates are a big portion of the electorate in new hampshire. they are a far smaller portion in iowa. so the fact

new hampshire is a primary, it's bigger.ved by national currents and kind of national developments. we have had, you know, in republican primaries going back to 1980, which is really the modern era of the primary system, the front-runner has always been defeated in either iowa or new hampshire. it's happened every time back to 1980. then south carolina picks one of those two winners of those first two states, but one has then won south carolina, and that's the nominee. front-runner has almost always come back and succeeded if that way. but there is traditionally an opening in these early states. could be more likely in iowa than new hampshire, given that iowa is tilted toward evangelicals where there might be room for an alternative to trump. but this is what you see, if you're one of those other candidates, you have to break through in one of those first two states to have any chance at dethroning trump. >> desantis, he's in closest reach of trump. what's he doing to try to turn his campaign around? we did hear an adviser j

theory of the case for anybody who is chasing donald trump is that they win in iowa, they win new hampshire on a roll and it changes the national picture. so a new poll out of new hampshire, they typically go second, and the story is a little different here. you see remember trump was at 54% nationally. he is still leading in new hampshire, but here the margin over desantis is only 14 points. 37-23. and a couple other interesting things. you see tim scott jumping up now to close to 10%. 8% for tim scott. and chris christie is up to 6%. and governor of north dakota is he spending on advertising. and it seems to be paying off for him in terms of qualifying for the debate. and what is interesting, you ask republicans do you have a favorable or unfavorable view of the different gi candidates her. trump at 49%-26%. and most popular republican in new hampshire just in terms of favorable rating is timvivek ra. christie has 6% support in the poll, but 64%, two-thirds of republicans in new hampshire saying an unfavorable view of him. so christie may be close to his ceiling in new hampshire. but when

we had a number of candidates who were add parades all over new hampshire's and in iowa.really shake up this race or are we set for a biden-trump rematch here in '24? >> we saw some of the republican candidates in new hampshire and iowa and fourth of july. this tradition then presidential campaigns. who we didn't see out there was president biden. we did not see donald trump. he had a rally in south carolina where he was able to draw tens of thousands of people to south carolina. this same state that is home to senator tim scott and nikki haley. i reported earlier this week, a twitter spaces interview that a spokesperson for the desantis pack had where he admitted that that is happiest campaign faces an uphill battle when it comes to taking on donald trump and his sizable lead right now over the republican >> so, right now we'll see republican fans out in states like south carolina, iowa, and new hampshire and republicans looking ahead towards that rnc debate in august. maybe one of them may have a breakout moment. right now donald trump himself won't be on that stage. >>

omar jimenez, cnn, new hampshire. >>> let's bring in daniel strauss, or political correspondent. good morning. i want to pick up on where omar left off. but the super pac backing desantis essentially acknowledging that they are way behind in the polls. what is your take on that? >> is tthis is a rare event in american politics. usually a spokesman doesn't concede without a huge amount of caveats that they are straggling behind their chief competitors. but it is true that desantis and the rest of the republican primary field are lagging behind donald trump right now. it is still early. a lot could happen. but at this moment in a state that distesantis needs to win, state that has a messer to of compelling long shot candidates to the front of the primary field, the former governor is trailing donald trump. >> speaking of donald trump, he was notably absent from july 4th campaign events. how do you read this? a sign of confidence? >> yeah, that is actually what i read here. it was back in 2016 trump was not one to march in a lot of parades. yet at the same time i remember going to a

last night in new hampshire right before taking the stage for his own town hall tim scott responded to the trump news. he says democrats are hunting republicans. >> it is embarrassing as the most powerful country anywhere, to see the weaponization of our department of justice against political opponents. it's embarrassing. >> florida governor ron desantis, who was really hoping for a campaign reset in the first in the south state of south carolina yesterday, instead spent the entire day defending trump in every interview. >> when you are going after somebody on the other side of the political spectrum, if you are stretching statutes to try to criminalize maybe political disagreements, that is wrong. >> not everyone fighting for the nomination has been as sympathetic. nikki haley showing frustration being taken over by law firms and legal fees. he sees a bump in polling after news of an investigation, no doubt all the candidates, harris, will be watching those numbers closely in the coming days. >> harris: thank you very much. florida governor ron desantis trying to close in on former p

new hampshire has a good number of them.n i was growing up, my mom always said, take care of those who take care of you. are we taking care of those that took care of us? let me tell you about our veterans. 33,000 of our heroes are homeless in america, that is shameful. one in three veterans suffers from ptsd or thoughts of suicide. we lose 22 of our heroes everyday to suicide. when they have to make a primary care doctors appointment, on average it takes them 29 days. when it hits 30, they get to go to the doctor of their choice. midway through the 29 days, they get a call to reschedule so that the clock starts all over again. that is not how you take care of those who take care of you. i will tell you, my husband is a combat veteran and plate to afghanistan -- deployed to afghanistan. everyone loves to see when families are reunited and they come safe. it is a blessed day. nobody talks about what happens when we go home. nobody takes care of these veterans in transition. my husband came back, he could not hear loud noises.

iowa, new hampshire take their first in the nation status very seriously.s going to have to go up there and explain to new hampshire voters why he deserves re-election, and i think he's going to be able to do that with all the jobs he's going to be bringing to the state. he's got two senators there who voted for a lot of packages that are going to bring a lot of federal money and jobs to that state. he's going to have to go up there, probably apologize for taking it away, but then explain to them everything he's done to make their lives better. but i do think it was the right decision. iowa, new hampshire had their place. south carolina deserves to go first. it's more diverse, it's more economically diverse, more racially diverse can, and i think he made the right decision there. aishah: but do you think they were prepared for this reaction? >> i think they were prepared for the reaction. everybody who's done campaigns know how seriously iowa and new hampshire take their status. that's not -- aishah: okay. >> that's part of who you are. you learn that as a

we don't have in new hampshire, no sales tax, income tax.and so i had to start policies in place that would cut the budget and and address some of the that had been put in place providing service delivery to constituencies that had become used to them. so am i am shaving service delivery in some cases by developing new policy and in some cases shaving, service delivery or restructuring service delivery by combining programs and bike by making new policy, if you will, on things like medicaid on things like welfare or on things like school aid and so on. so they really go hand in hand because. you are reshaping old delivery by. the new policy that you're making and you've got to do it while you're continuing to operate the old rules until the new legislation is passed. so as much as you can think of them as two separate response responsibilities, you've got to in order to do either one of them properly, think of them as being. two slices of the same piece of bread and and you've got to work on it that way. very good. please join me in a big ro

biggest logistical challenges bill is that new hampshire in new hampshire have, how much does this really matter? well look, biden is going to be the democratic nominee as long as he runs, but symbolically, this is damaging. president biden is 80 years old, and there are a lot of questions, including among many within the democratic party about whether he has the stamina of the health to serve in in office until he's 86 years old. so we see the poll of the fox poll shows. you know, there are a lot of alternatives whether it's rfk jr. marianne williamson, winning about a quarter of that democratic vote, so do not compete and to get ahead. headline that you're not even contesting the first in the nation primary. it's not a good look for the white house, and it could do some symbolic damage as these concerns build up closer to the campaign. you think about this and this could all backfire on them. and then you have to ask yourself. did you think it through? and it it may be a clear example where they did not last comment on that. yeah yeah, i mean, look, the democrats had a desire to they pu

what they want to know the voters in new hampshire okay why you?k about my biography, for example, being the only war veteran running. i can talk about my accomplishments in florida. we are the number one state in the country in terms of people wanting to come and then the vision for the future that goes with the economy and goes with strengthening our military. all these things that are so important, at the end of the day it's going to be about substance. >> your campaign says it's re-setting says you are going to be more insurgent, meaner and leaner. that has happened. have you recently laid off a third of your campaign staff. it's happened before on campaigns historically. ronald reagan did it. john mccain did it. they went on to win the nomination, obviously reagan went onto the white house. but what happened to you and your campaign? >> everything you do needs to have a return on the investment. and so we have a little bit of a different structure. we don't pay consultants. we hire people to work in-house. some of the reasons we may have some

and florida governor ron desantis marched through the rain and tour event in new hampshire. the first republican caucuses will take place in iowa where pence made a big push this independence day. but notably missing from any campaign appearance was his former boss, gop front runner donald trump. cnn's kyung lah is with pence in the hawkeye state. it is all in on iowa and that is abundantly clear as we are watching former vice president mike pence campaigning through iowa. his campaign says that it is this all 99 county visiting each one, shaking as many hands as possible, hitting the coffee shops, hitting the pizza cafes. this is where they believe that the former vice president shines. and you certainly saw it as he was walking a fourth of july parade in urbandale, iowa. it was a two mile parade route that, at many points, the former vice president burst into a jog shaking hands with this many people as possible trying to sell this idea of a conservative future that he sees as a blueprint for america. and then he came up here to rural boone iowa. where he talked about ener

new hampshire, iowa. desantis, scott, nikki haley in new hampshire. in new hampshire, it can tell you how folks are feeling. some of them like desantis and haley will be in new hampshire. former president trump is probably looking for a coalition of more moderate republicans in new hampshire to give him a bit of a boost. but the dynamics of this primary have not changed. all of these folks today will talk about how they are going to be the person to be the nominee. but at this point what we've seen and continue to see is republicans, the base, everybody largely in donald trump's camp. the more he gets in legal trouble and jeopardy, the more that solidifies them. even though it's counterintuitive, but donald trump spent years telling people that they're coming after me because i'm defending you. they are coming after you next. so that is why this republican party continues to struggle with trying to figure out how to get in front of him. those folks in iowa and new hampshire hope that's going to change for them soon. >> thank you so much. happy fourth.

that is far down the road and far down thed line but the appearance in new hampshire is certainly soaking up speculation. he hasn't committed to what he's going to do with any regard, and the places that he's appearing in new hampshire is somewhere where the presidential candidates go. he's going to visit to get into politics and that is kind of the bread and butter where you go and talk to people if you're thinking about running for president. so, certainly no coincidence that he's going there. it's an interesting thing. it's something the democrats will be watching very, very closely. >> thank you for joining us this morning. >> it's my pleasure. thanks for having me. >> again that is stephanie murray political reporter at the messenger.
