>> rob, thank you. >>> now, to the tensions at the border with mexico. new details emerging tonight about the 8-year-old boy dying in the custody of american border officials on christmas eve. the second young fatality in just three weeks. the department of homeland security now launching a new policy for dealing with children under 10 at the border and now asking for help from the coast guard. here's abc's chief national correspondent matt gutman. >> reporter: tonight, border patrol launching an internal review, after another child died for the second time this month. the boy and his father were both traveling from guatemala, they were first detained near el paso on december 18th. on december 22nd, the pair was moved due to overcrowding. but on christmas eve, the boy showed possible flu symptoms. at about 9:30 that morning, he was taken to this hospital and evaluated. at 1:20 he'd spiked a fever of 103, but just 90 minutes later, the hospital released him back to the border patrol, prescribing him antibiotics. that evening, border patrol agents noticed the

he is the second migrant child to die this month while being gadi schwartz has the latest from new mexico. r in el paso, texas, where an 8-year-old guatemalan boy and his father apprehended. six days later, the child who members of congress have identified as felipe alonzo-gomez is dead. now an outcry over his death. officials say they provided hot food and water and listed several transports between three patrol stations between el paso and new mexico. the child was causing and appeared to have glossy eyes. 30 minutes later, cbp says he was transferred to a hospital. he was tested for strep throat, diagnosed with a cold, given medication, released to a hospital and taken to a nearby holding facility.en the way bac the hospital lost consciousness. he passed away on christmas eve. >> we responded by doing secondary medical checks. that means paramedics who are checking each child in our custody. >> reporter: as a sweeping review has been ordered in detention facilities across the country, today department of homeland security secretary kirstjen nielsen is calling the death deeply concernin

she and her father were picked up by border patrol in new mexico after crossing illegally, and she diedy. for the first time tonight we're hearing from the family. here's cbs reporter carter evans. >> reporter: protesters at the border in el paso are demanding action over the death of a 7-year-old migrant girl. >> she and her father came escaping a dangerous situation in their home country. there was their right under international and border law. >> reporter: they were taken into custody december 6th in a remote area near the border near antelope wells new mexico. an initial screening of the young girl, border patrol says, revealed no evidence of health sures, but the next -- issues, but the next morning bus to a border station, the father advised the child was sick and vomiting. by the time they traveled the 95 miles to the border station, the child wasn't breathing. she was revived twice, but her temperature soared to 105.9 degrees. she was air lifted to a children's hospital where she died. >> if we could just come together and dissscparage peop coming up to the border. >> reporter:
