up here to new york. we've have talked about how the crowds have already begun to gather here on fifth avenue, which is below where we are, right next to st. patrick's cathedral where we find nbc's stephanie gosk. it's got to be getting crowded down there. >> reporter: it is, kate. you know, 4:15 in the afternoon, mid town manhattan on fifth avenue and there is not a car on the street. you see crowds beginning to gather. everyone that's behind these barricades here has gone through a mag knnetometer. behind that an eight-foot chain link fence. stretches 12 city blocks and 3 after blocks wide. completely encircles cathedral. anyone trying to get close to the pope has to go over the fence. kate? >> stephanie gosk, keeping an eye on the scene on the ground, just below us here on fifth avenue in new york, as that crowd starts to build. we'll continue to go back there for now, we're keeping an eye on the plane. the american airline 777 jet that will be carrying pope francis from washington up here to new york

i'd like to thank the city of new york for hosting us. i'm from texas and texans and new yorkers have a lot in common. we're proud of our heritage. we have a bunch of great accents. we're not afraid to fight for our country. this is the second time i've tried to be here. the first time i tried to come to this great facility, there were so many people here, it was hard to get into. so that warms my heart to know that there are many folks that are not going to forget what happened on those days of september 11th. this is special to me because i spent nine years with undercover options in the cia. mr. mayor, you talked about yemen. the day i left san antonio, texas, to start training in the cia was the day of the cole explosion. we did not take seriously what our enemies were saying then. you alluded to that in your opening remarks. we weren't taking seriously what was being stayed in the late '80s, either. it's usually and i'm nervous that we're not taking serious loy or serious fluff some of the concerns we have from all over the world rega

talking about security, brian, we've seen it all, those who live in new york. i remember years ago when i lived near the u.n., you'd see mailboxes this time of year during the general assembly. but we've seen new things, including eight-foot tall fencing along some corridors around here to get people to pass through. we have seen signs and even say "no drone zone" yes, they have to deal with the threat of drones. reminding people not a good idea to use those or selfie sticks, for that matter. we are also seeing something, i saw this in washington, d.c., this week, i believe we're going it see it here today, the tsa, people you normally encounter at the airport, running security checks at least at those security checkpoints, running the magnetometers and doing bag checks of people going into ticketed areas. everybody, this is an all hands on deck security event. various federal agencies from many -- federal agents from many different federal agencies who are taking place. there are police officers who work in other parts of town. we've heard stories of people ask

he new york is a different -- new york is a difference animal. now are york yorkers adjusting to what's going to occur there? >> i imagine like d.c. but on a much larger scale. when you shut down entire blocks and avenues in new york city, there is a lot of disruption, but thousands of new york city police officers and the secret service have been planning for this event and things seem to be going. >> thely and all the people out here line -- going smoothly and all the people out here lining the streets are pretty quited for the event. >> it's an incredible tourist place. tell us about st. patrick's. why is the pontiff coming there? >> reporter: well, it's really considered america's parish. this is the headquarters of the archdiocese here in new york and it's been around for 150 years. it's a beautiful cathedral inside and out but fell into disrepair over the years until they began renovation about three years ago, a $177 million renovation. it is stunning. millions of people come here every year. >> st. pat's draws popes from years in the past.

now he says hello to new york governor andrew cuomo. i wonder if governor cuomo is speaking italian to him. the pope is most comfortable in italian or spanish. spanish is his native language. as he said today in congress, he is a son of immigrants. italian was spoken at home in buenes aires. his english, he says isn't very good. today he gave almost an hour's speech. there is new york senior senator chuck schumer now greeting the pontiff. next in line will be new york's mayor bill de blasio. senator schum other having an extended conversation with him. now the mayor of new york phil de blasio. and cardinal dolan is in there saying something. everybody smiling. this is really just a joyous moment for all. >> we also have the invocation as we watch this. we have seen it so many times. the pope may wade into some of the crowd. i think people of the crowd have come to expect and hope that they may be able to reach out and touch him and even talk to him. >> you see cardinal dolan pointing out the workers and the pope is weaving to them. just

rallying with hundreds of new yorkers in east new york in brooklyn. ople here are demanding half of the new houses built here are affordable to them. >> push them out because the rent is so high they can't afford it. the mayor michael bloomberg the city lost a third of apartments families. >> what we see now are effects of 20 years of housing policy, 20 years of people little by little being pushed out. no attempt to house these human beings. >> and homelessness, the number is rising everyday. >> homelessness right here. >> they are getting pushed out of state. >> new york city under the bloomberg administration eliminated entirely the permanent housing programs which were designed to help homeless families and children leave the shelter system. >> under bloomberg the number of people in homeless shelters each 54,000. >> essentially what we have it was a massive social experiment that if you take away permanent housing assistance from the needy children and families in the city what will happen? >> no good jobs. >> everyday in this city people are losi

[ cheering ] his trip to new york city relatively short, less than 40 hours, but packing in a whole lot and coming in contact with so many new yorkers. the pope arriving at jfk thursday night. once in midtown, a ride in the popemobile. up close with the crowds who he likes to be close to. he didn't want that eight-foot wall the secret service and nypd insisted be installed. his first stop -- st. patrick's, where they worked overtime to complete the $177 million renovation just in time for the papal visit. >> papa francesco, welcome to st. patrick's cathedral. they played "new york, new york" to welcome pope francis to new york city today.hich is so freaking awesomely new york i can hardly -- ah, fuhgeddaboutit. but even though the pope was landing in the brooklyn of queens, the brooklyn diocese wanted to make sure to get the name brooklyn out there. the brooklyn diocese unveiled their giant banner on a nearby airplane hangar that said the diocese of brooklyn welcomes pope francis. rather than subject the pope to the admittedly and truly uninspiring drive from john f. kennedy airport in queens into manhattan where he was staying and where he was due this evening they decided to fly the pope that distance by helicopter. that gave us this sort of remarkable scene of the helicopter carrying the pope against the backdrop of the new york city skyline. after the papal helicopter landed in manhattan, pope francis then linked back up with his trusty papal fiat, which drove him to 5th avenue. up at the top of 5th avenue by central park he then got out of the fiat and got into his awesome jeep popemobile, which then proceeded slo

and to see him in new york will be something special. we've had three other popes in new york. pope benedict , pope john paul ii and the pope back in 1965. so quite a number of them have been in new york. but this pope who is instantly recognized, so many know him, so many like him. we will see many, many people out there, of course, awaiting his arrival later this afternoon. >> and mary, tell me if you agree on this, he has had so many event, this 78-year-old pope has kept such an act tiff schedule -- an active schedule since he touched foot on u.s. soil. and it looked as though he was starting to feel. but he is so happy and so overjoyed when he is in the presence of not only children and just seems to me, there is a different smile on his face when he is with these people. not that he doesn't enjoy being with the politicians but you can see the unbridalled joy on his face. it equals the joy of the people he has been able to spend time with and reach out and touch. he says dialogue is what moves us forward. and everything that comes out of the pope's mouth seems to resinate w

leaving their children in the care of someone else. >> it sure is and now, new york city hopes to put parents at ease with a new way to check on the safety records of a daycare center. shirleen allicot in lower manhattan now with more details on plan. shirleen? >> reporter: david and liz, it's astonishing right now, there's no easy way for a parent to find out if a daycare center they're about to send their child to has had this new bill will help parents make the right choice and cut out the red tape. it all comes after the death of 3-month-old carl town doe this past summer, his mother took him to sew hoe child care on the recommendation of people in the neighborhood. sadly the baby died during a midday nap. his first day away from his mother. police say the daycare center was unlicensed and who found the baby blue lipped and unresponsive tried to give him cpr. but wasn't trained in life- saving procedure which officials say is required of licensed providers. it happened in councilman shin's district and she joined forces with vaca to introduce a billment this would require the city
