prosecutors said the 79 year-old killed for prostitutes and northern california between 1977 and 1994. the trial started with opening statements yesterday. they sell who is representing himself has called the state's evidence " circumstantial ". however, the prosecution tells jurors, there is enough evidence to prove that a soul is both a serial rapist and israel killer. the evidence includes the dna on one victim, matching nasals profile bound on a part of pantyhose which was wrapped around the neck of one of the victims. prosecutors are seeking the death penalty. the trial is expected to resume this morning. the marin county coroner has released the official cause ofthe night stald ramirez. he died due to complications from cancer. the coroner says, ramirez had b cell lymphoma, which is a blood cancer of the lymph nodes. corner also says, ramirez had substance abuse issues, as well as a severe case of hepatitis c. researchers said, theell lymphoma is a treatable with radiation at a 70 percent cure rate even and the diseases later stages. no word whether doctors diagnosed it before h

it looks like it's going to move across northern and central california.this huge trough of low pressure, it looks as if we're looking at rainfall for monday and tuesday. totals up to half inch, so wild varying totals, but the coastal elevations could get over one inch of rainfall on monday and tuesday. so let's get a look at the totals. not everybody is going to see a lot of rainfall. it looks like the north bay will have the best possibility on monday, with the first wave of activity. and quite a bit less here for the east bay and the south bay. trace amounts to half an inch. as far as our forecast goes for saturday, we'll see daytime highs at 84 in san jose. 88 in gilroy. and for your saturday, back across the east bay, probably feel like the low 90s out here towards livermore with 87. 87 in walnut creek and 88 in concord. warmer for you in berkeley with 75. 77 in oakland. p in santa rosa. if you're going to sonoma this weekend, over 100,000 people heading out to the nascar sprint cup series. sunny skies and by sunday, we get the wet weather changes rol

when you look at some of the issues that we talk about in the state and we are not here in northern california and silicon valley and stanford. are we in a completely blue area? >> yes, we are. this area what we look at when we see a map of california it is very deep blue pockets along the coast and the major metropolitan areas and then the red areas everywhere else. we have a lot of redwood trees and cows and farms in the desert >> in silicon valley itself or their red pockets and people who aren't that polarized or are they polarized? >> there are a couple differences everywhere evin in manhattan. you will find them but what makes it difficult for people you would normally think of as republicans, wealthy people that have a lot of stock options etc., the california republican party looks more like a texas republican party of some of the republican from the platform is to kill the salmon and - gays and that doesn't appear to the people here they will raise their taxes because they basically have no choice. so i mean, again, it's you can't really tell what people are thinking for how they are

welcome to this week in northern california. joining me is david baker and lauren sommer and dan walters. joining us from the state capital. they say the third time is the charm. it comes with a billion dollar surplus for a rainy day. before passing out the champagne, that budget is based on revenue which is hard to predict. is this budget really balanced? >> that's -- it depends on what your definition of balanced it. two years ago, they did it jerry brown vetoed it and it was late. it's balanced in the sense the appropriations in the budget can be paid for, but the budget ignores some big picture items, some very big things they weren't doing. the teachers retirement system needs 4. $5 billion more a year to remain solvent. if you did that, the budget would be unbalanced. it's all in the eye of the beholder. >> to get to this point though, how did it happen? was it just jerry brown's leadership? was this put together based on his strengths? there's no bipartisanship on this. the republicans didn't want this budget. >> well, it

heading into that time of year where we're going to hit significant fire weather and knowing northern california as we are now but eventually southern california, one of the most effective ways to stop the fires from growing is that initial attack, which means we need to be able to quickly put resources up in the air and move them. i guess my question is from a national guard perspective, from a naval perspective, with the helicopter resources down there, do you feel you would be able to quickly move those resources and you have the agreements in place. we'll start with the national guard and work on our way down. >> although we're advertised as a one week a month and two weekends a year, i've got crews on pretty much every day and if cal fire calls i can get crews out in just a matter of hours. we did do that about two months ago, the robbers fire, and it worked out real well. cal fire went in real aggressive and put out the fire in a short period of time. so there's no issue with us being immediately available, we've got our buckets, crew trained. >> as an example of that, 2007 we saw -- 2003

not too bad, but the clouds are here, and there's our cold front making its way through northern california right now. all of the cloud cover through the bay area so it's going to be a cloudy day and intervals of drizzle expected at the coast and we're already seeing our first signs of shower activity west of santa rosa. this line of showers is going to move through quickly. light, not going to prese a lot of rain. but at this point, right now, every little drop counts. as we get towards monday and tuesday, that's when we'll see more rainfall, but in the short term of things, right now, just a few light showers scooting through the north bay. and all this is expected to move through santa rosa and napa in the next couple hours. keep the umbrellas handy, especially in the north bay for today. we've been telling you about how dry it is all year long, this is one hof the driest years on record since 1849. from livermore to oakland, only 2 to 3 inches of rain since january start said. we're used to seeing 10 to 20 inches of rain, even in san francisco and santa ruse. what is coming our way is g

it's about 200 miles off the california coastline and showers showing up in northern california. and this will arrive in time for the morning commute. make sure you take it easy tomorrow morning. the roadways will be slick. we haven't had rain like this since april. we are talking april 4th the last time we had a decent amount of rain in san francisco. now over the next 24 to 48 hours we are expecting .1 inch up to 3/4 inch and that would put san francisco at receiving the most rain not only in a two-day period for june but for the whole month. if we get more than .11 inch in san francisco that is the most rain we have seen in june altogether. this is a big deal. we'll track the timing on the rain and let you know when the 90s are in the future. >>> the wait will soon be over. the supreme court's decision on same-sex marriage is due this week. in 2008 voters passed proposition 8 in california. legal experts say that it's not surprising that the decision has been long in coming. >> hard to find five justices on any of these cases to come not just to a decision but the reasoning fo
