storm team 4 radar is showing the snow in northern maryland. and for everyone wondering about when do i need to worry about shoveling my driveway here in the washington metro area, you probably don't need to have the shovel out until after lunchtime today. but after that the snow could come down fast and furious for a couple hours and could add up to several inches. there's the leading edge of the snow moving into western parts of west virginia. and temperatures are not terribly cold just yet, but they will be getting colder. we'll give you the where, when and how much here coming up in the next couple of minutes. for now, my colleague amelia siegal is outside in it. what do you have so far? >> reporter: it's still the calm before the storm like you're talking about. it's completely dry out here and the winds are not an issue. the temperature at our station in northwest, 39 degrees. chuck, i brought my gloves out. i don't need to put them on just yet, but look at our temperatures throughout the day today. as the snow makes its way into the area

i talked to a family living in northern maryland tonight. good example of the problems people are having. she told me her husband is a 60-year-old very skilled worker, technical writer, has been out of a job now for three years. this woman is so disappointed that their unemployment benefits are running out, he is sending out applications all the time, one of the reasons he can't get a job is because of his age. he's competing with college grads. >> we talked about the disadvantage that older americans at least feel like they have, even among the younger folks getting into the job market. adam may, irnlg l lori jane glis been looking at another issue that the president was speaking about, even he can't avoid it, obamacare, the affordable care act. >> he had to apologize for promises that didn't pan out. this is a signature part of his presidency so he couldn't avoid it and i did time how much he talked in the speech. it was five minutes talking about health care. >> in an hour and five minute speech. >> he took a minute to jab at the republic

we're also here at 6:30 snow in the northern neck of southern maryland. earlier today if you were with me this morning, the back edge of the snow is here. it's creeping north and west. i expect it to creep more north and west with the models so that by 10:00 instead of let's say southern prince georges charms, st. mary's and then king george, columbia beach, i think this could be actually west of the metro. so there's going to be areas west of i-95 picking up a little bit of snow. the trend is working in that direction. also the trend has been that the heavy stuff will stay south and east, and i believe that to be the case. this starts to clear out early tomorrow, so the sun will return. we'll get back into the 20s, the upper 20s tomorrow. how much snow am i talking about. well, i've taken these bands, moved them a little north and west from this morning. around d. c. up maybe to frederick here through loudoun loudoun county as well. 1 to 3 fredericksburg, prince charles, annapolis. southern calvert, st. mary and if you're in the northern neck you can get

northern baltimore county up near westminster. they've issued a warning into northeastern maryland. there's the snow and this is sort of the first punch of the snow. the main event is still going to be later tonight. this is what i call free snow kind of. we're looking at snow pushing to the south, still raining into southern maryland. that will eventually kick the snow later on. so snow and rain for the evening commute, temperatures generally above freezing now for the next few hours. that's good news for folks inside the beltway. it's going to get really slippery as we go through the night into the early morning hours and then tomorrow the headline won't be snow. it will be the slick roads and also the wind chills in the teens. step outside. just in the last hour or so we don't have anything really sticking, but just a little bit of slush and this is going to make it some kind of slick in the metro area. just wait for some flash freezing tonight. we'll come back and show you the snowfall accumulation in a bit. >>> tonight we already have one delay for tomorrow morning. stafford co

lawmakers, they really got their champions on capitol hill up in arms, talking about members from maryland and northern virginia who have a lot of federal workers in their districts raising these issues in congress and at the white house. so, they did end up having some success this year. they grumbled about the budget deal. the key thing about the budget deal is it only eats into retirement benefits for new federal workers. it leaves retirement alone for current federal workers. that was a pretty big victory considering what was on the table when those discussions began. getting the two-year reprieve in he the sequester is also a big thing for federal workers. and you also have to give them some credit after the government shutdown. they won backpay. that has happened after every government shutdown, but there was a question this time considering the climate of austerity and the angst against government spending. they had a number of small but significant victories in a time that has been pretty tough for them. host: looking at your list, "three of the top four lobbying victories are from the conserva
