as danielle nottingham reports, biden spent the day trying to find common ground with the country's most powerful gun lobbying group, the national rifle association. >> reporter: marianne in a stern came to this virginia gun shop to buy her first firearm. she says the mass shootings in aurora, colorado and newtown, connecticut helped her make this decision. >> if i have the opportunity to save other people because i have been equipped then i'm going to do it. and if i have the opportunity it save myself, i'm going to do that as well. >> reporter: as the vice president sat down with gun rights groups thursday, he kept the focus on preventing gun violence. >> there's got to be some common ground here. >> reporter: but finding that common ground with the nra has been difficult. the national rifle association says it's closed door meeting with biden had more do with taking away gun rights than protecting children. the white house is looking to ban assault weapons and high capacity magazines. that's a hard sell to gun owners but there's another proposal that seems to be gaining traction. >> t

danielle nottingham has the latest from the state department. >> reporter: u.s. officials are trying to get a handle on the hostage situation at this natural gas plant in algeria. the algerian military surrounded the remote plant where militants took dozens of foreign workers hostage including some americans, but the rescue operation may have been botched. algerian security officials say helicopters fired on people fleeing the compound killing militants and some hostages. >> it was a fluid situation. we are seeking clarity from the algerian government about this matter. >> reporter: one diplomatic source says four americans were able to escape. gunmen stormed the plant wednesday afternoon. some were wearing suicide vests. hostage taking is not uncommon in this part of africa, but the scale of this militant operation is prompting the state department to review security for the whole region. an al-qaeda high pressure linked terrorist group that calls itself the masked brigade is claiming responsibility. the group says it took the hostages in response to algeria's c
