. >> reporter: there are between 200 and 400 people camped out as part of the oakland occupied demonstration and since we have been here it seems like a tense sleepless night, since last night, they said there was going to be some sort of police raid and they would take down the encampment and the tents and since then, they have been preparing for that. at 1:30 it didn't seem there were too many people sleeping and since 1:30, we saw the group had spotters on all four corners of this intersection which is 14th and broadway. the sign of law enforcement, we did see 20 chp vehicles and at that time the protesters also saw those vehicles and we can hear shouting going on people saying get up, get up waking up the people who were still asleep and telling them to get prepared. we are not sure where they are standing but people have put up dumpsters and some wooden barricades, some wooden pallets outside the encampment, not sure what it is for but it appears that people are prepared for police to come and break up the encampment. now the group noticed it was illegal for them to spend the night out

a marathon occupy oakland demonstration that started late yesterday, it's still going on this morning outside oakland city hall. we have live team coverage for you. ktvu's lorraine blanco is checking out the damage from 24 hours of demonstrations in oakland. but noel walker is right outside city hall. >> you mentioned there were a handfulle of protesters out here. we have about a dozen protesters and a dozen police officers. everything here this morning very peaceful. but that was not the case last night. take a look at how it all started. >> this is the police department. this is an unlawful assembly. >> reporter: now, that was the first tear gas and flash gren raid that were tossed out into the crowd around 8:00 last night and that was after the police gave the disbursal order you heard. it was preceded by some protesters throwing bottles, eggs and paint at police. police also fired bean bags into the crowd. the hours-long standoff had some tense moments and our ktvu camera men documented at least three protesters who were hurt. there were also two officers injured by the things thr

mean time tonight the "occupy oakland" camp is growing. once again outside city hall hundreds of protesters returned to frank ogawa plaza, some setting up more tents. the media heard from jean quan, kron 4's reggie kumar has the latest. >> reporter: many of them spoke out about the violence between police and the demonstrators that happened on tuesday and there was a vigil for the iraq war veteran that was injured in those protests on thursday. now, jean quan has been trying to address the protests all day today and that moment just arrived a few moments ago. here is what happened. is kron 4 news at 11:00. >> tonight outside oakland city hall looks like a campground as the occupy oakland protest continues there and in cities across the nation. kron 4's da lin is live in oakland. has turned into a party tonight, right 12347 they are dancing right now to live music. believe it or not. there are dozens of tents with several hundred people. these folks are known as the occupy oakland protesters and they have been here since monday. earlier they were on the move. >> reporter: 100 of the so- called occupy oakland protesters marched friday evening. they spoke out on all sorts of topics, supporting the hunger strike and demanding more money for schools. the protesters say they are united by one common cause. >> america is broken. it needs to be fixed. everybody is suffering except that 1% at the top. >> we need freedom in america and eat and sleep at night. >> reporter: they marched to the police department under heavy police presence. the marchers came from different background. >> we support the salvation of america and the future of america through the american people and

"occupy sf" protestors saw what happened in oakland and said the same thing could happen here. they were warned of a possible early-morning raid between now and 6 a.m. after receiving a letter from the police. it says they are subject to arrest. they say the fire department sees fire hazards. health department has concerns over the unsanitary conditions and the city says many protesters are in violation of city code. a few people are awake this morning, singing songs, a strong smell of marijuana. many of the people are asleep. the city and the police department insists tha

hundreds of people still camped out here at "occupy oakland." this morning the more than 100 tents and men in hoods with walkie-talkiies security guards guarding tent city here. they have been left alone until now but last night oakland ordered them to leave by 10:00 at night. as you can see, they are still here and they say they are not going anywhere. the city is trying to enforce a curfew. protestors have to leave from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. but can still great during the daytime. the city said on its worst said that city official during the past 10 days have given protestors guidelines on public health, safety and crowd control. now the city says it's out of hand. "occupy oakland" says it's not going anywhere. were you surprised to hear the city was telling you guys get out now? >> well, no, because it's probably an intimidation tactic. they don't know how to approach us at this point because they don't know if we are chiefs or indians. they just know we're an issue for them right now. we have been an issue. knew we're standing up for ourselves, i

occupy oakland first ladying in the footsteps of the original wall street protest. amy hollyfield is live near oakland city hall where they seem to be packing in for the long haul. >> reporter: yeah, occupy oakland is serious about occupying oakland. look at the little tent city behind us in front of city hall. there's a food tent, they are brewing coffee there now. they have breakfast breads for people gearing up for a busy day. at one point, at its peak yesterday afternoon they estimate there were about 500 people here this is part of the occupy wall street movement that started two weeks ago and is spreading across the country. demonstrators are upset about the profits that corporations enjoy while many in the middle class struggle to find jobs. they do think this demonstration is necessary now in order to save the future. >> basically, if we don't fight now this is how we'll be living leave it up to the corporate people it is scary the way the economy is the way the markets are. this might be what we are reduced to. we are getting ready but making a message at th

occupy oakland has been busy drawing up plans for a city wide strike. amy hollyfield is live in oakland with more. >> reporter: remember police cleared this plaza out. look at it now. it looks like it did a week ago before police moved everybody out. the group is planning for future actions. the latest strategy for oakland is a day of action planned for wednesday they are calling for a city wide general strike. there isn't much of a police presence in front of city hall. saturday we saw protesters marching through the streets. it was a peaceful demonstration. police are investigating a couple of incidents from graffiti during that march. one person did smash in a window at the police recruiting office. the group of occupy oakland says that was not an authorized action. they are calling for peace. city officials have agreed to one request. they want medical supplies back that were confiscated when the camp packed up last week. the city has said, it will give them back. >> we've had to regroup and basically start collecting new supplies for us to use for f

moore visited the occupy oakland site as well. at ocean beach, a very visual occupy message. about a thousand activists used their bodies to spell out the message "tax the 1%." they're part of the group called "the other 98%" that pre-dates the wall street movement. the timing here is perfect. here's the final product. what they say is a call to the president for a top 1% of americans to pay more in taxes. >>> now to a story that may drive you away from the beach today. a 27-year-old monterey surfer is waking up in a hospital room this morning 24 hours after a shark attacked him off the coast of northern monterey county. the shark attacked eric tarantino around 7:15 yesterday morning, minutes after he and a friend entered the water. the shark bit tarantino on the neck, barely missing his jugular vein. the shark also bit his right forearm. tarantino's friend helped him out of the water, then other surfers used beach towels to help stop the bleeding. when paramedics arrived, they called in a hell continuer to fly him to san jose's regional medical center. >> fortunately, he did
