it happened on the blacksburg main campus about five hours from baltimore and an hour southwest of roanoke. that's where we find abc's scott goldberg. scott, you're joining us live this morning. what is the feel as we begin to make it to first light? reporter: well, right now, charley, on the campus it's kind of a nervous feeling. the students yesterday had an impromptu vigil at a site of the memorial for the 2007 shooting, the worst massacre in u.s. history when 33 people including the shooter were killed. they came out here to remember -- or to think about the police officer who was shot yesterday and obviously they're still very much thinking about what happened almost five years ago and this happened to coincide with a visit by campus officials to washington to appeal a fine levied against the university because of the slow reaction time when that happened in 2007. this time around, though, there was a much quicker response. within six minutes of the shooting, the campus shut down, there was a lockdown, there were regular updates going to students and faculty. so in some respects peopl

now to the south of roanoke. you can see everybody seeing the heavy rainfall. two inches still to come as we make our way through the evening tonight. heaviest rain in southern portion of maryland. this area, i think, could see thunderstorms over the next two hours then back to the west, we are looking at heavy rain toward washington. winchester and the martinsburg area very heavy rainfall there. one to two inches an hour. that is where we are seeing that rain change over to snow. one other thing you notice, take a look at this area right in here. this is the area that right now is looking at thunderstorms and some severe weather there. we are looking at thunder and lightning out of that area. we continue to watch that, too, as it makes its way to the northeast. southern portions of maryland, st. marys county will see the worst of the storms. 48 in washington is the current temperature. we have seen falling temperatures all day. 37 in winchester. the rain/snow line around the winchester area now. this is what i expect to see from 6:30 through 8:30, 9:00, we see

as we look into baltimore right around 56 degrees. 59 in roanoke and more of the same in hatteras. looking back, we are looking at the fact that cold front has pushed through and we are going to start to see and feel some of that colder air moving into our area as well. but for right now, the big story the windy conditions across the area for today. right now, we have a sustained wind into baltimore at 17 miles an hour. and dc coming in at 16. and over into hagerstown 23. and you heard the operative word is sustained. as we get gust up to about 35 miles an hour as we go throughout the day. and easton on the eastern shore not look so bad or feeling so bad right now. the weather pattern we are waiting for the cold front to push all the way through the area. and in its wake we will be dealing with cooler air but then high pressure will make its way in here as we go into the weekend. there is maybe a little caveat and i will show you right now. so future trend will pick up on the fact that we will start to see that front is going to slide through the area and going to stall out. along

roanoke. already a few pockets of moderate rain. and pretty heavy rain moving through eastern georgia right now. could be flight delays around atlanta, georgia, today. chicago, it's snow now east of the area around ft. wayne, indiana, and that's where the colder air is wrapping into the system. here's a look at the future weather by noontime, 1:00. these areas of yellow, there will be moderate and heavy rain. winchester, gaithersburg, d.c., manassas, culpeper, and virginia too. quite a few neighborhoods. and that continues until we get to 5:00 or 6:00 when the rain starts moving out. again, a very fast moving system for us, that area of low pressure and the cold front coming through. the snow will continue out west. the high spots in western maryland, west virginia, maybe one to three inches in a lot of locations there until we get to early wednesday morning, that snow out west. for us, no snow at all. it's all rain for us. in fact, again, itted can be heavy at times. 45 to 52 degrees. wind out of the south at 10 to 15. we're breezy

a lot of you have been talking about the nice cool air. we will see the warmer temperatures. 59 in roanoke 51 in charleston. some of that warmer air will make its way toward the north over the next couple days. we will make our way into the 50s. maybe even the upper 50s ahead of a storm system that could bring us a chance of some rain. we'll talk about that after the high pressure moves to the south and east. that area of high pressure is going to switch our winds a little bit. so a mostly clear night. as the high moves to the south, we'll see the warm front. that will allow for some warmer air to come in but also for some cloud cover. i wouldn't be surprised to see a shower to the north and west talking about the panhandle. maybe western portions of maryland around hagerstown. i think most of us will stay dry, if not all of us will stay dry. a better chance of rain on thursday as the cold front moves in. that cold front will usher in some cooler air for the weekend. but et cetera not going to have a lot of moisture associate with it. most of that moisture should head to the north. but the

meanwhile, the widow of officer crouse has mentioned to the roanoke times that their family is shattered. they're devastated and so is law enforcement, the family, brotherhood there and the hokey nation. they'll be gathering once again today because of tragedy and to honor the life of virginia tech police officer 39-year-old deriek crouse. the funeral will be held this afternoon besides governor bob mcdonnell and other political leaders, there will be a large contingent of officers who will be arriving. faculty, staff and students gathered last week here for a vigil on the drill field. thursday's events reminded students of the terror of the 2007 massacre but also of coming together. >> i'm proud of everyone that showed up. i'm proud i live in a community where everyone comes out and they support each other and everyone is there for each other. >> part of a family. as soon as any tragedy hurts anybody, you feel like it is in you to go help them. >> investigators are still figuring out what the motive was behind the shooter, 22-year- old ross ashley. and why he opened fire and killed offi

roanoke. these are thunderstorms. as all this moisture starts driving in with the area of low pressure along the front, we could see enhanced for a period of time. i don't know, maybe thunder snow west of the area. heavy snow reported throughout areas of west virginia, outside of maryland. for us, watch what happens with the weather front. we switch from rain to snow, 10:00, 11:00 p.m. the skies will start clearing rapidly. a few clouds left early tomorrow morning. highest elevations early on. the snow may hang on longer, enhance d by the mountains, the altitude there. they could get three to six inches of snow. tomorrow, windy, chilly. you definitely need the coat. switching from the umbrella to the coat. clouds back to the area friday at 7:00 a.m. all in all, a day that will be remembered friday as a mostly sunny day, a chilly day. the cold is here. here is a look at how much snow you'll see. cumberland, three to six inches of snowfall. two to three in westminster, frederick, hagerstown. these are the areas i'm worried about. it's been raining all day. crews haven't gotten out to treat the roads. hagerstown to petersburg.

of i-70 a little bit later toward midday. right now, it is quiet. a lot milder than yesterday. look at the 40s in west virginia down toward roanoke. it is 47 degrees. the chilly air we had, that's up to the north and east now with temperatures in the 30s and even much of new england has warmed significantly since 24 hours ago. remember, we had upper teens yesterday morning. locally, we're down to 32 in gaithersburg. college park also at the freezing mark. while it is 38 in springfield. manassas, the cold stuff at 30. centreville is 34 along with haymarket at 33. here in town, we sit at a relatively balmy 40 with cloudy skies. calm winds, dew points in the 30s and the barometer holding steady at 30.41. high pressure is nearby us across pennsylvania. look at the jet coming up toward chicago with moisture. this will delay air travel in chicago potentially minneapolis but also through columbus. some commuter flights that go through columbus will be delayed as well. going down to atlanta or up toward boston and new york, shouldn't be much in the way of weather problems today for travelers but we will watch all of the moisture out to the

latest numbers from bwi, pushing 38, mid-30s from roanoke to charlotte, jackson, mississippi, 27, a sign ofle as it crosses the mountains, high pressure in control, storm pattern may carry clouds on the re certificates side on the return flow, but still a breeze, holding temperatures seasonable, and we are virtually weather-free, if you will. there's always weather, just going to be quiet for us. storm track is in the western great lakes, central plains, getting snow in denver colorado and the ski areas of utah with heavy rain across parts of the desert southwest, and that brings in the strong winds in california. that energy could infuse into a storm track as we go into next week, but future trend shows a quiet outlook into the start of the weekend, and this storm pattern may bring rain into cleveland by sunday, and reach us by monday and tuesday. today, however, 52, 10-20-mile an hour winds, and tonight, back to 27 in the city, near freezing downtown. it's 50s for the next few days, but outlook after the warm sunday near 60 is rain that could end with snow. we'll watch it.
