it's highway 1 in pacifica. the rains have caused a mud slide there, which is now blocking several lanes. >> that's where we find tod"tod in the bay"'s sharon katsuda. how's it looking? >> reporter: you can see people lined up here at the intersection and this way too along highway 1. flares are set up and police officers are telling drivers one by one to make a u-turn. the mud slide came down just before midnight. cal tra caltrans says this mud slide is about 15 feet tall. it covers the entire right lane of highway 1 near reyna delmar avenue in pacifica. you can see by the size of it, it will take a whole lot of time and heavy equipment to clean it up. drivers are having to take a detour all the way down in half moon bay. >> i just filled up with gas, i can make it. i've got to get to my starbucks. i'll see you guys later. >> reporter: northbound lanes are shut down for now, but we're being told that this area could open up as early as 5:30, so that is the good news, for now, as you see behind me, drivers are b

as you can see they are wrapped up in pacifica. process started this morning. >> made a lot of progress. you can see the thing is all gone pretty much. as crews begin to demolish that apartment there are things that go into that including the decision to tear it down. alex savage has more. reporter: this apartment building had beautiful views of the pacific ocean is being torn down today because the ground underneath it is too unstable. the complex at esplanade avenue in pacifica is being torn apart because the bluff is in danger of collapsing. work got under way at 8:00. the crew and demolition fired up the heavy machinery and started to rip it apart. there was a drone put up in the air to monitor the oceanside of the building and watch for any falling debris. because this apartment sits on the edge of an unstable cliff. demolition crews had to be careful. >> this calls out for the equipment to be no close are than 40 feet from the edge of the cliff. these are 80 pounds each. it could give way anytime. >>> everyone in this apartme

. >>> well, it's demolition day in pacifica. this was the end of the line for that red tagged department building sitting on that eroding cliff. the heavy equipment was calleded in, workers tore into the structure and started this morning. the building along 310 esplanade avenue remains empty. >> reporter: this demolition has been going on all day long. there's very little left of the building now. you can see that excavator getting big mouth fulls of the debris. and putting it into huge trucks which will then be taken away to the landfills. now this is a building site that was active during the 1960s when there was a lot more land here. unfortunately it was built too close to the edge. and so this was one cliff hanger ending that was very predictable. >>> already threatened by erosion down the street. the apartments were finished off by blows that came from above. >> reporter: three high reach excavators tore through the apartments like they were nothing. a sort of ballet of demolition. it took just a mattedder of minutes to re

anne >> reporter: the rain just picked up here along the coast of pacifica. the good news is that highway 1 is reopened this morning. we have several hills and cliffs in the area that are in dangle falling this morning as the ran up continues to fall. that's what we saw happen yesterday with this mud slide along highway 1 near rain nadel mar. mud dirt and rocks on the northbound labors and between cleaning up and shoring up the hillside it took almost 25 hours to get the lanes reopened and there aren't a lot options for getting around highway 1 unfortunately, so traffic backed up along the peninsula coast all day long. crews put a concrete barrier between the section of the hillside and the highway to try to prevent another roadblock but preventing the land from sliding is impossible. the ground is saturated and it will be more so by the end of the day so it's impossible to know when and where the next landslide might pop up. live in pacifica, anne makevoc, kpix 5. >>> crews are keeping an eye on a mud slide in guerneville. it slid down near several homes on

we will taken ae in pacifica. >> reporter: oh okay thank you roberta. we have to let people know that highway 1 here in pacifica is shut down because of a mudslide. right now all of the traffic trying to go northbound at raina del mar is stopped and all theter knitly -- alternately they will using the other lanes. the cleanup continues on this mudslide that happened at the about 11 last night. a huge pile of mud dirt and rocks about 15 feet high. caltrans has been working with heavy equipment trying to move all of this mess back up on to the hillside and this is one of many roadways at risk of mud slides this morning. all the rain has saturated and then weakened the hillsides all over the bay area and in between now and wednesday, we are expecting another inch and a half of rain here in pacifica. now unfortunately, there are not a lot of ways around this. if you want to avoid it, best bet is to go back down to half- moon bay and take 92 to 280. and that is certainly a drag so plan on extra delays if you are going through this area and actually in a lot

highway 1 in pacifica. don't know when they'll fully open the roadway because the mud, the dirt and rocks keep slipping down the hillside, a mudslide. so there's still traffic control there. you saw it in the shot. this is the slower drive north out of pacifica toward 280 around reyna del mar. folks trying to avoid the area, you've got a lot more driving to do. south toward half moon bay, 92 to 280, not so bad as far as traffic flow but more than we usually see this time of day and a lot more mileage. 17 has traffic restrictions at vine hill. folks getting around one side to get around a mudslide. that is still in effect. has been since this morning. highway 101 reopened, as kris said earlier, and highway 84. a mudslide closing at calaveras, south of 680. not used by many. if you use calaveras, you cannot pass at south of 680. that's an issue. we had the mudslide here on highway 84. i didn't see good pictures, but i think you might have some. >> thank you very much. >>> new video of crews hard at work in fr

pacifica windy for you. 50degrees. we're tapping into the tropics it's a whole different ball game when it comes to where is our air coming from. it was canada for so many days. sunny but lows. it's not canada anymore, it's coming from hawaii. we have two storms coming in, the one we're dealing with tonight and tomorrow evening and friday morning, nearly 2- inches of rainfall. then we get a break thursday and friday we'll be rain free. plus add up this storm and the next storm which will wrap up on sunday night. now we're looking at very impressive rainfall totals. four to 8-inches of rain in the north baby sunday. three to 5-inches of rainfall in the east baby sunday. and the santa cruz mountains upwards of 11-inches of rain. why? because when you have an atmospheric river it slams into the mountains and pours in there. some computer models are reporting they will see 18- inches of rain just over a seven day period ending on tuesday. that's going to be a major flooding concern. as we look forward into this rainstorm.

the city of pacifica has been preparing over the past 24 hours. men with the public works department cleaned out the storm drain that spills out to the ocean near the pier by making sure the pipe is clear of any beach sand. workers are also trying to fix a sink hole at a busy section on edge mar avenue by highway 1. a large hole estimated 14 feet wide, 15 feet deep. an eroding cliff, the apartment at 310 esplanade needs to come down. they have been working to remove much of the interior before demolition of the building itself starts as early as next week. but to reiterate how beautiful it is out here, we are out here this morning. it didn't look this way. it was foggy, cold, but here you have a nice light breeze out here. it's warm and you've got this beautiful view here of the waves. but it's expected to get much more violent in the next 24 hours starting around noon tomorrow according to high surf advisory. once you get into saturday morning, we could see those waves getting into the 25 to 30 foot range. reporting live here on the pacifica pier

with self phones in hand, it was a moment many in this pacifica neighborhood wanted to remember.emolition of this 20-unit apartment building on esplanade avenue began early this morning. from sky 7 you can see how crews carefully dealt with the unstable structure and bluff to avoid any pieces falling below. >> it's really hypnotic to watch. i wish they could have done some things with the wood outside of just turning into toothpicks. >> reporter: the debris was loaded and hauled to a landfill in san jose. it was the last of three builds on esplanade that had started collapsing due to the continued bluff erosion. >> i moved here 45 years ago and there was a football field out behind each of these apartments. >> that means -- that means that much erosion. >> we've been worrying about this since last year, before that too. so we're just very happy that we're now again taking the build down, protecting the public safety. >> reporter: the city helped residents relocate earlier this year. taxpayers will have to foot the cost of the demolition, about $330,000. the owner of the property

the city of pacifica had declared a state of emergency for this building. the cliff continued to erode after several strong rainstorms this last january 1 year ago. the building yellow tagged at that time and everyone was forced to leave. although the city did offer assistance to those people who were forced out of their units. just this morning the city manager was out here taking a look at the project. she says the bluff here is still unstable but pointed out the problem didn't get worse during recent rainstorms. >> what's stabling us is feeling like we didn't have to rush the demolition quickly than we already were. we have been somewhat lucky the storms have not produced flooding we have seen before and not produced the impacts on the coastline last year. >> we have seen scenes similar to this one in pacifica just a year ago. two other apartment building also here on this avenue were torn down for the same reason because they sit on this cliff here that is slowly eroding. to bring you back out here to a live picture, they're probably having this buildin
