during that time, they bought property here in palo alto and created a stock farm. we have a huge collection of stock farm records, including journals, racing figures, horse breeding statistics. we have these ledgers documenting each of the horses and the lineages. it was a huge operation for them to sell and breed horses. edmundcommissioned muybridge to do motion studies on the farm. the story goes that there's this famous bet to prove whether or not all four of a horse's hooves come off the ground during trots. he hired muybridge to create a test to prove this point. you can see here these early photographs of a series of specific captures of a horse's trot. you can see that the horses hooves do come off of the ground. it took about seven years to perfect the studies and equipment to produce the results we see here. i mentioned this was a stock farm. they raised a lot of cattle, raised and bred horses. they sold horses throughout the world. this is one of a number of trophies that were awarded to stanford and the stock farm during those years. in 1893, leland stan
