i'm pam cook. time now 6:30. an early morning fire started in a san pablo apartment after a woman fell asleep while cooking. ktvu channel 2 reporter allie rasmus joins us now with why it was such a close call for this woman and her little baby girl. allie. >> reporter: well, this fire started in the hill top apartment building complex right here behind us in san pablo. now earlier we had been set up right outside right next to where this apartment fire started, but earlier this morning some of the managers out here made us move off of the property. before we left our cameras did go inside the apartment unit where this fire happened. inside you can see a lot of heavy smoke damage in the kitchen and the living rooms. firefighters say the woman who lived here fell asleep with a pot on the stove and that's what sparked this fire around 2:00 a.m. the smoke triggered the apartment's sprinkler system and firefighters say that may have saved the tenants lives. but also reported that the interior smoke detector was not so

good morning, tara. >> reporter: good morning, pam. we are learning more about the man confirmed dead in this boating tragedy. the coast guard says the fisherman's chances of survival are good given that the water temperature is warm but hope is fading. passengers that made it out tonight are not sure if people from the upper decks were able to grab life jackets. 35 crew members and passengers survived by swimming 16 hours to shore or being rescued by mexican fishermen or navy boats. u.s. coast guard left yesterday searching for the tourists. the boat capsized before dawn on sunday when it was hit by a sudden storm. one man as we mentioned has been found dead. we recently spoke to may lee the missing fisherman donald lee is clinging to hope that her husband will be found alive. >> just thinking about not being with him it's horrible. i have to hold on to that. i have to hold on that there is hope. >> reporter: lee shared with us this video a similar fishing trip that her husband organized last year. this is the third time he took the t

. >> reporter: good morning, pam. opd investigators should be still look into these cases as the last one happened at 10:00 last night. hopefully i get a chance to talk to somebody. the shooting happened in east oakland. and in a couple of these case there is are multiple victims. emts took two people to the highland hospital. police responded to the scene around 8:30 last night. a bullet grazed the third victim but that person didn't need to see a doctor and didn't go to the hospital. another person was shot at 98th and bancroft. this shooting was reported around 9:45 last night. each victim has nonlife threatening injuries. 15 minutes earlier than that about a half mile away police say three people were shot. police are look for four or five suspects in that shooting. then around 10:00 last night 15 minutes later police say a person was shot at 71st and international. police did not say if there is a motive to any of these shootings. we do know there is no suspects. reporting live kraig debro. >> all of this violenc

thanks for joining us, it's already thursday pam july 28th i'm dave clark. >> good morning i'm pam cookow is 6:30. >>> in the news for you right now. an american airlines pilot attacked by a passenger on a plane bound for san francisco. now two men could face charges. ktvu's jade hernandez is at sfo right now with a look and details on who was arrested and exactly what happened, jade. >> reporter: that's right, we have mug shots at this hour. we could tell you passengers were two hours late and they had quite a story to tell when they landed. two unruly men on board this american airlines flight bound for sfo from miami. one of those men witnesses say on board punched the pilot. you can see here jonathan and luis daniel baez were arrested after two men were down after police made arrests last night. the police report says the flight attendant noticed jonathan baez didn't have his seat belt on and tried to wake him but he was unresponsive. it seemed to the attendant the man was drunk or high on drugs, she then alerted the pilot. flight 1755 was taxing for take off when the situation esca

pam, i can give you an idea of what actually burned last night. these are an example of some of the containers that went up in flames. last night, firefighters were monitoring hot spots. the damage from what burned remains. >> plastics are made from oil products. it's a petroleum product. so it's the same visual effect as if you were seeing an oil fire. that's very intense heat. very thick, dark black smoke. >> we're just thankful that all of our employees evacuated safely. and we didn't have any injuries. >> reporter: five acres burned with an estimated 20,000 bins inside the yard of the factory here in fairfield. firefighters liken it to the heat of a tire fire. and the fire broke out shortly after 1:00 yesterday afternoon. 45 employees were at the plant at the time. and it appears a blow torch touched off flames and an employee mistake led to the huge fire. the only injuries reported, three firefighters retreated for minor injuries. health officials said they had no reports of smoke related injuries due to the fire, but residents within a mile

am i going to sal or pam? >> pam, thank you. >>> tonight family and friends will hold a vigil for the good samaritan known as brother john. 29-year-old paris powell was shot and killed while serving food to the homeless. jade hernandez joins us with the emotional reaction from the widow. >> reporter: we're at the place where the deadly shooting has took place. you will also see where there are candles still burning for the 29-year-old good samaritan that was gunned down on wednesday. paris powell's wife wanted us to call her lollly. she still has a bullet lodged in her shoulder. we spoke to her and you can see she is a woman trying to wrap her head around the thing she has lost. her 29-year-old husband paris powell was known as brother john. powell, lollly and their two children were serving food to the homeless. paris, lollly, and one of their daughter's was hit. lolly was shot in her left shoulder. the bullet went through singing her hair. four months pregnant she says she is still in shock. >> i keep wracki

wednesday, july 6th i'm dave clark. >> good morning, i'm pam cook. time now 6:30. >>> in the news right now the search goes on for the seven missing fishermen off of mexico's baja peninsula and at the same time incredible stories of survival are emerging. tara moriarty is in our newsroom now. they have all details of this. >> reporter: survivors grabbed ice chests, life jackets, and life rafts to help them swim to shore. when they reached inside of the coolers, that is where they found hersheys kisses and melted ice. it helped them stay alive for 16 hours in the waters. 35 crew members and passengers were able to swim to shore or get rescued by the mexican navy. now survivors worry that some of the missing may not have made it out of the boat since the storm struck so suddenly and hard at 1:30 in the morning on sunday while most people were sleeping. we spoke to may lee of san ramon who's husband's done is still missing. he called her before boarding the boat. >> he said i just wanted to hear your voice before we got on the ship because we are gettin
