kavita patel. i spoke to a white house official who said they were prepared for some challenge in this rush to vaccinate americans and to beat these variants. that is why they purchased so much supply of all of them, frankly, but especially of pfizer and moderna. how do you evaluate this news today on j.j.? j&j? >> hopefully i can give people some solace in what you said. it's extremely rare. i can talk about all the other type of adverse effects, things we see in other vaccines. i'm not dismissing the person that died, the families that are dealing with it. they are incredibly affected by it, but you can't vaccinate billions of people and have zero side effects, adverse events or risks, and while many are criticiing that they are overly aggressive, the fda is doing what they need to do. i hope by tomorrow afternoon when the advisory committee is scheduled to discuss and vote on what this means, we will get clarity, but as you heard, i think this was the right thing to do. i would ask the question

joining us now is viraj patel, global macro strategist, vanda research.tart with your take on risk appetite. on one hand you have inflation building in the u.s. not running away with itself and scaring people unnecessarily, but you have negatives coming through from the pause in the j&j rollout. none of that stopped u.s. stocks. what is powering ahead global risk appetite? viraj: we think we will hit the pause button, and april will be about consolidation. we are starting to see treasury yields, value investors coming back into the market and buying at these levels. we also think in the short term we will get peak inflation uncertainty. as we saw yesterday, we will get more readings in the u.s. and europe on inflation and a next couple of months. that will give a reality check on how inflation pressures are, how central banks are from tightening in the near term. that points to good consolidation in yields. a good environment for growth stocks in the short term. anna: you do not think we will see inflation prints that will scare risk appetite or cause a s

patel and dr. bedellia.week was a deadly mistake, saying 10 million doses will sit unused in refrigerators. do you agree with that assessment? a vaccine pause doing more harm than good? >> well, alex, i think that the argument here is that, you know, particularly because johnson & johnson has been so helpful in vulnerable populations, those that may not be able to come in for that second dose, those in more rural areas, i do think there's a marginal cost to the pause itself. this is revealing to the public about the thoroughness of the evaluation of the fda, of the cdc's advisory committee. so, my hope is, look, even with a rare incident like this, which they picked up and hasn't been seen in the mra vaccines that we're taking all these measures, i hope it breeds more confidence in the process and on the other side of this reduced vaccine hesitancy, but it remains to be seen. >> i know you agree with this j&j pause. there's a new piece for msnbc.com that you say this pause shows it's working. how do you bala

patel, i want to start with the rate of vaccinations going down 20% in the last two weeks. it has a lot of people concerned but should we be or does that number represent the fact that lots of us have already been vaccinated and we don't need it again? >> that's absolutely right, stephanie. it's the inflection point it's reflecting we had incredible demand with lower supply. we reached a shift now which many of us knew what happened, where now supply is going to exceed demand. it's just a question of how to get through those last populations that either do not want it or have some reservations and want to wait and we want to try to bring them forward. >> let's talk about those 8 million people who did not go back for their second shot. for me 8 million sounds like a big number. the white house says no, not by historical standards. what do you think? >> no, it's not. i administer multi dose vaccines for other purposes and we see as high as sometimes 50% drop-off for a second or third dose. i'm not saying it's a good thing. i want to reiterate what we need to do know, some of

kavita patel.'s great to have you because you actually are a practicing physician. so the adeno vector that j&j is using has been used on a lot of different vaccines in the past, dr. patel. a lot of people took solace in that that it had been a tried and true method. is this surprising this is happening with this particular covid vaccine? >> it is surprising and i think that -- the fda issued a brief statement with more details later today. six cases that they're scrutinizing which seem similar in detail looking at further detail to cases that we've seen similar to astrazeneca where it mimics kind of what we call heparin thrombocytopenia i will say this, it's shocking and hard to believe that there is such a strong link of causality that these vaccines cause these clots but, again, the people who have had the j&j vaccine, the only solace i would tell you is the six cases, it appears still trying to work through details, joe, but it appears the clots were seen early and so this is something that i h

patel? >> yes. so we know the evidence supports that children -- or let's be clear, ages 12 and over, we do see that they act almost like adult in the sense that you can see the rate of spread, similar in ages 12 and over, to other adults. then we know that younger children are not as efficient or effective at transmitting the virus. i think the reason you're seeing all of us still putting into place, asking children to wear masks, even outdoors is because of the variant and we're now seeing transmission and variants in children that went from child to adult. so it's not common, but, again, i do think children are not a significant risk, but it's a risk that i don't want to take with my child. >> kids are adaptable. frank figliuzzi, what does this do for the callers? >> yeah, there's a couple serious issues with carlson's comments. i have to tell you, nicolle, i debated even coming on and talking about tucker carlson. for him, this is really about ratings and relevancy, and he thrives on this kind o
