paul heggen joins us for a closer look.k about el niÑo, but what exactly does that mean? >> it has been several years, we had three straight years of la niÑa which is the opposite impact. let's take a look at the things we look for, mainly temperatures in the equatorial pacific. we are looking for those temperatures in the equatorial pacific to warm-up, that is what you see on the globe here. that stripe on the equator indicates temperatures at the ocean surface that are well above normal and that has some trickle-down impacts in terms of global impact with weather patterns around the entire globe. we have a closer look at what we can expect. >> you guys are looking good. >> it has been a slow start . >> i was afraid that the weather might have gotten you down, all that cool weather that we had. >> for the first time in 50 years , gary wasn't going to put in his annual backyard crop. >> hey, look at those little tomatoes. >> battling the wet weather had become too much. >> it was cold in the daytime, it was cold at night. >

paul heggen has been getting us ready from all of this. i came from 104 in the city so i kind of felt both of them. >> the heat is definitely on. it is a first alert weather day. let us take a look at what our temperatures are standing out now. fairfield is still at 100 degrees. but it is 84 in santa rosa. back down to 82 degrees in san jose. it is only in the 60s in san francisco and oakland with 50s along the coast. so have got 50s, 60s, 70s, 80s, 90s, and continues on all inland parts of the bay area. tomorrow will be the peak of this bay area with the hottest spots of the bay area topping out around 105 degrees. 110 in fresno. they will be approaching 115 degrees in the desert. this is a far spreadsheet event which does have the fingers of climate change on it. climatecentral.or g categorizes how much more likely and extreme weather event becomes due to the influence of climate change, but twice as likely around the bay area. further inland, the dark shade of maroon corresponds to this event being five times more likely because of the

chief meteorologist paul heggen looks at the conditions contributing to the fires . >> reporter: dry vegetation leading to this threat with the weather conditions helping the crews get a handle on them because the wind was not strong and we have had onshore winds which will carry moisture from the coast by the remote and the humidity levels were not that low. around 45% at the lowest . we do not look for an elevated fire threat until the humidity levels drop below 20%. because the vegetation is dry, especially after being cooked, fires can start, it is a matter of how fast they spread. a few trouble spots outlined farther inland by the forecast models, but on a zero to 10 scale, we will be at a three or 4 , that is where we will be tomorrow and again on friday with temperatures continuing to run below average, lower temperatures mean higher humidity levels, but the vegetation is definitely dry. take precautions and resist the urge to engage in fireworks, but that is the time of year we are in . i will have a check of the forecast as we get closer to the weekend in a few minutes . >>>

let's check in with paul heggen on this first alert weather day. >> we can confirm that, the temperaturesri-valley and the delta have reached above 100 degrees. the unofficial sites around pittsburgh, antioch and brentwood recording 103 degrees still at 5:00. of course we have that wide range of temperatures across the bay area, from 60s to 70s, and on the peninsula, 80s and 90s and into the triple digit heat. similar conditions tomorrow, cool on the coast, mild around the bay with hot temperatures inland. in terms of the excessive heat risk, we are in the midst of the peak of this particular heatwave, antioch is one of the hottest spots with the heat risk under the very high category today, it'll be almost identical again on saturday. sunday we will see some improvement down to the elevated category which is a big drop in terms of how dangerous the heat is for the second half of the weekend. we will take a look at a return to normal temperatures a little bit further down the line coming up. >>> the heat has gotten so bad already that bart is having to run the trains slower, it is because

paul heggen joins us with your fireworks forecast. i know a lot of people have been asking the same question. what will the fog be like? >> you can usually count on some fog for the fourth of july. inland, no problems. but everybody has questions about the waterfront. here is the forecast hour by hour as we head through the rest of this evening. temperatures in the mid-50s when the fireworks launch at 9: 30 but we have a fair amount of cloud cover within the marine layer. that still has some room for flexibility. here is a factor that might help us out. i will bring our augmented reality into the picture here and show how the depth will determine the visibility of the fireworks. we will use for a point of reference the top of the towers of the golden gate bridge. just under 750 feet. most fireworks burst between 600 and 1200 feet depending on the size of the shell that is launched into the air. last weekend into the weekend there is a big area of high pressure in the upper areas of the atmosphere which compress the marine layer and th

let's get over to paul heggen with how hot it is going to get and how long it's going to last. >> it is not going to last that long, the peak of the heatwave is going to be tomorrow and we will back down slightly on sunday. again, around the bay, no problems, above average with 70 in the city, 80 in oakland. temperatures in san jose are going to be in the 90s , take it easy when temperatures are above 90 degrees. the real hotspots are going to be in the tri-valley and the delta, between 100 and 107 degrees. that is the reason for the excessive heat warning, it includes all inland parts of the bay area but the far spots toward morgan hill and gilroy in the santa clara valley. to the north bay and far east, the tri-valley into the delta, that is where the temperatures are going to be dangerously hot over 100 degrees. when the temperatures heat up, we have to be concerned about the fire danger, we can categories that on the fire danger index , today we were lower than the halfway point on the scale. that is about where we are going to stay over the weekend, despite the increase of tempe

let's head over to paul heggen who has been getting ready for this extreme heat for days now. it will be uncomfortable! >> yes, for a couple days. the good news is it is a two-day peak to the heat wave. the san joaquin valley will deal with this for more than a week. let's look at what is in store for tomorrow. temperatures take a jump compared with today's pretty normal july temperatures. we are pretty average around the bay and about five to 10 degrees further inland. hottest spots reach upper 90s and even close to 100. in terms of the heat risk, one of the hotter spots is always around antioch and brentwood. the delta will be seeing heat risk levels in the moderate category today, climbing to the high category tomorrow with the hottest day going to be saturday . that follows the purple line into the very high category. even folks who ordinarily are not prone to any heat -related health complications could easily overexert themselves, which is why we have the excessive heat warning for inland parts of the bay area. the trouble spots will be where temperatures climb over 100

we bring in chief meteorologist paul heggen on what to expect for the weekend. >> yes, cool on the coast to warmer around the bay, and hot inland. it was hot enough today. here are the high temperatures for inland parts of the bay area today, and we were several degrees above average. reached up close to 100 in concord. 12 degrees above normal. everyone is going to be hotter tomorrow. our heat as vise rhode island mains in effect through sunday, but tomorrow is the peak. the hottest weather is actually going to be in the central valley where temperatures top out around 110 degrees. this is a widespread heat wave that extends into nevada, down into arizona, and it has the fingerprints of climate change all over it. we can actually measure that with with a the statistic called the climate shift index, something that climate central came up with. basically just measures how much more likely an extreme weather event becomes because of the influence of climate change. for us in the bay area, we're in the orange category meaning it's a climate shift of 2 meaning it's twice as likely as without

. >>> time for a look at the forecast, paul heggen is looking at the time lapse of that fire. it doesn't look like they are having quite as much wind up there. >> not nearly as much smoke coming off the fire, which is good news in terms of the spread of the fire and air quality in the region. there still some smoke coming off of it, this is the view from sugarloaf ridge , keeping an eye on all perspectives around california, looking for these fires. most of that smoke is coming from the middle of that burned area. still smoldering in producing smoke , but firefighters have this one in hand. the wind around it is up to 20 miles per hour, but the wind is onshore, which means cooler temperatures and that means the humidity levels are nearly as low as they could be in early july. the onshore wind will continue with a parade of ripples in the upper levels of the atmosphere swinging through over the next several days. we are going to be on the cool side all the way through the weekend so the onshore breeze will continue and a relatively low fire threat continues into the weekend as

. >>> time to take a look at the forecast with paul heggen.i know you said today was a little bit more normal but we are gearing up right now. we are preparing. >> we are trying to get used to what is in store for us, because we have been cooler than average the past couple of weeks. we have another heat wave coming up, let's take a look at the bigger picture pattern here. we have the normal weather that is going to stick around for one more day, then the heat dome is going to expand its influence towards the bay area. this is going to last a few days. the peak of the heat wave is going to be saturday and sunday. those temperatures are going to be well above average but not record-setting. the temperatures are going to climb rapidly, you can see the short duration nature of this upcoming heatwave. near-normal temperatures again tomorrow, above average on friday and closer to 15 degrees above normal saturday and sunday, but backing down quickly and spending most of next week normal. and even the hottest day on saturday, we are not likely to set

. >>> speaking of climate, time for a look at the forecast with paul heggen. we know the heat is coming, everybody is ramping up, making sure their air-conditioners are working. >> you will not notice too much of a warming trend although it'll be present along the bay in the coast, it is going to be an inland heatwave without much of a significant impact along the coast. it'll retreat a little bit off to the east for the second half of the weekend but the cloud cover sneaking up on the second half of the weekend but it's still going to be hot on sunday. as the heat dome retreats, the flow of air around that area of high pressure has the potential to grab some moisture from way down to the south. and send it up towards us, it shows up as the brighter colors. and you can see it streaming up towards the bay area by sunday night into monday according to this forecast model, that brings the potential for maybe a couple of dry lightning strikes , not very likely because it doesn't look like there's going to be a big storm system to trigger that type of activity. but

. >>> it is time for our first alert forecast with paul heggen. >> we still see cool conditions across most of the bay area and a lot of cloud cover over the city, a little bit of sunshine earlier but the fog is starting to swallow up the top of the salesforce tower once again, we will see that fog spreading out for the rest of the evening and tonight, coastal drizzle is going to be possible. cool temperatures are going to be continuing through the weekend, cooler than average is still warm for parts of the east bay especially but the pattern will flip around beginning early next week, back to near normal temperatures on monday and some hot weather in store beginning on tuesday. you can see that in the 10 day outlook for livermore, some of the biggest swings in temperatures, you will be well below the average high of 87 through the weekend and a big spike in temperatures over the 48 hour time frame. sunday afternoon to tuesday afternoon, the highs will jump about 15 degrees and the inland temperatures are going to be hovering in the 80s and 90s. no extreme heat likely at this point but

. >>> let's check in with meteorologist paul heggen . it could be worse because it could be drier and hotter. but this goes to show that it is dry and hot enough. >> the dryness is the fuel because the weather conditions were not that conducive to the rapid spread of any new fires. winds were occasionally gusty. strongest over 20 miles per hour in the bay area. the onshore breeze does carry some moisture. the offshore winds are when things dry out in a hurry. the humidity levels are not bad with the lowest humidity on the map now about 50%. earlier today , the lowest levels were about 40% . it is twice what we look for for a dangerous threshold , 20% or lower. the dryness of the fire fuel , especially after the heat last weekend which cooked the vegetation. we are combining everything in a zero to 10 scale, lower than the midway point today and we will be lower with cooler than average temperatures continuing tomorrow and on friday. but the fire threat, because the fire fuel being dry , is never zero . we will come back and talk about ho

paul heggen has a look at what is going on. >> the temperature is based on a nasa data set , the global average temperature over 60 degrees earlier this week , this record likely to be reset . you would not guess that based on our temperatures but let's bring in the globe as we are talking about global temperature records. in north america , a couple of trouble spots recently with hot weather even for normally hot desert southwest as phoenix was close to 120 degrees a couple days ago and the ongoing heat wave in texas over the past several weeks. china has had abnormally hot weather , approaching 100 degrees with northern india at 115 degrees. other normally hot spots in the world, north africa and the middle east have been hotter than they already are usually are, over 120 degrees on a consistent basis. the weird one as we swiveled around towards the south pole with a research station in the argentine islands of antarctica, it is winter, dark almost all day with a sliver of sunlight on the horizon, but the recently recorded temperature come in the 40s fahrenheit them away out of the or

let's go to paul heggen who has been keeping track of all of that. i know you have suffered personally because the air has not been great. >> i lost my voice and was not able to talk. the air quality is not great again today. moderate for most parts of the bay area , but these areas had some of the worst air quality, trending towards the unhealthy for sensitive groups category. tomorrow you should reach this with a combination of wildfire smoke and urban pollution, and this is leading to our hot weather. the heat advisory goes into effect at 11:00 tomorrow and continues for many inland parts of the bay area, but it will not be quite the extreme event we had last weekend or weeks before that. some spots will be topping out at or above 100 degrees tomorrow afternoon. one of the hotter spots will be antioch and the heat risk was in the high category with temperatures getting up to 100. tomorrow the heat risk is likely to edge towards the extreme category. that is in the hottest location during the hottest part of the day. already the heat begins to back

paul heggen is here with more on air-quality advisors. >> tomorrow the air quality is going to be a little bit worse, and also the locally produced ozone at ground level. let's take a look outside, it is hazy. this is from mount diablo, that is the wildfire smoke , a lot of which is elevated in the atmosphere. the heat is also going to be a big story, heat advisory for many inland parts of the bay area tomorrow and saturday, it is also spare the air alert day on friday. temperatures will be back to average or slightly below by next week. the smoke in the atmosphere will be tough to shake because the wind is blowing parallel to the coast, taking the smoke from southern oregon and sending waves down to us. it's not going to be overly thick tomorrow, just a combination of wildfire smoke and locally produced ground-level ozone. we want it up in the atmosphere to protect us from ultraviolet radiation. that combination of wildfire smoke and ground-level ozone is likely to prompt another alert on saturday with air-quality reaching the unhealthy for sensitive groups category inland and east bay an

paul heggen has warned us about this. we are talking triple digit temperatures inland. that is something to prepare for! >> it ready for it! we are still a couple days away from the building. you would never guess based on how nice it is this evening. inland is a mix of 70s and 80s and temperatures tomorrow are going to be very close to what is normal for the middle of july. everybody within a degree or two of average, which puts us into the 60s and 70s and mostly 80s inland. the heat builds friday, then saturday and sunday are the hottest days in the forecast. that is when we have an excessive heat warning in effect for inland parts of the bay area with highs from 90 degrees to 105 degrees. the high end of things is really just inland parts of the east bay that are likely to hit the heat warning thresholds. everywhere else is more of a heat advisory. exercise caution and make sure you are not over exerting yourself. check on those who are more sensitive to the heat for health-related reasons. just plan ahead. you have a couple days to get ready for this one. we take a

. >> paul heggen joins us with a look at when the heat will really wrap up. >> we are looking at several days of hot temperatures. they happen to be over the weekend when a lot of folks will be outside doing stuff. let's look at current temperatures. this has been a pretty normal july day. temperatures are a little on the toasty side. inland temperatures have been a mix of 70s and 80s. we have at 60s and 70s around the bay and low 60s around the coast. temperatures do jump tomorrow a little bit around the bay and more further inland with a couple degrees above average and closer to five degrees around san jose and 10 degrees above average for the inland spots. the average is high enough that 10 degrees above normal put you in the upper half of the 90s. the real heat arrives on saturday which is when the excessive heat warning for all inland parts of the bay area goes into effect. above 100 degrees in the east bay, so it is important to have a plan to beat the heat over the weekend. the heat will continue through the central valley while our temperatures back off as we head into early nex

. >> paul heggen is tracking the dangerously hot weekend for us. >> it is going to be toasty, just a matter of how hot things are going to get, inland will get up close to 100 degrees. let's compare these temperatures to what is normal for the middle of july, this is the hottest time of year for parts of the bay area, but we are going to overachieve tomorrow. the low 90s in san jose, 17 degrees above normal in concord, that number is remarkable but if you add it to the 88 degree normal high, you get all the way up to 105 degrees, that is going to be the case for most of the tri-valley and the delta. let's take one of those spots, antioch and take a look at the heat risk which today topped out in the high category, 100 degrees already. same thing for fairfield and brentwood but it steps up a notch on friday, into the very high category, even extreme for the heat risk. essentially, that is the threat of over exerting yourself if you're not careful. stay hydrated and take breaks. sunday, it will peak a little bit earlier in the day and not as high off the charts. then it'll drop quickly
