. >> trace: two points for you, paul mauro. fourteen is young for a shooter.overed these for years. are you surprised the shooter decided to surrender? >> i am surprised. both of those things are unusual incidents. one of the things you have to consider here is that he must have been new to the school. it's a high school. given his age, he must be a freshman. it's the beginning of the school year so this feels to me like something that he was really determined to do that might not have had anything to do with any trigger in the school itself. one of the things this is going to go back to, and whether or not it will apply under georgia law remains to be seen, is the case where the parents were charged because the student had access to their guns, despite very obvious red flags. in this case, we know the flags were there to the extent that the fbi was notified and yet nonetheless he was able to do what he did. a lot of investigation to go here, motive, social media, digital investigation, all of those things still to come but you know that is something that will

paul mauro and political reporter selena zito join us now. you were at the shooting. security failures. what are the two or three things that stood out to you? >> well first of all, we have to recognize we're going to be hearing a lot about things we've already talked about. the fact there was no communications between the various agencies. the fact the anti-drone technology couldn't be deployed because they didn't have it set up. here is something we're learning on the ground out here. there were significant failures before the event even occurred due to lack of manpower. apparently some of the police agencies here who wanted to work it had to work it on a volunteer basis because overtime was not approved. then in the after math of the event some of these agencies stood around waiting to be debriefed and part of the crime scene and nobody talked to them for two days. many of them stood around for hours into sunday and then decided to go home. so in a way to advance the story, in addition to all the failures that we've talked about, which are all memorialized in this
