. >> i'm peggy bunker. laura garcia-cannon has the morning off. we have breaking news out of east san jose. one man is dead. police found his body not too far from a public golf course. bob redell joins us live from the scene with an update on san jose's first homicide of the year. >> reporter: good morning to you. based on what residents are telling sjpd they heard this man get shot around 12:30, 12:45. they heard several gun shots, heard a car driving off but for whatever reason no one bothered to call 911. perhaps because gun fire may not be unusual in this part of town. it wasn't until 45 minutes to an hour later that someone driving by did call 911 to report a man lying on the ground near a driveway a few houses down from where we are standing on east san antonio not far from where it crosses over 101. the man, an adult, shot at least once was unresponsive, paramedics tried to revive him but they couldn't get him to come back. he was pronounced dead here on the scene making him the first person murdered in san jose in this new year of 2014. p

peggy bunker, "today in the bay." >> thanks very much. this morning we are bracing for a possible drought declaration from governor brown. give you a live look at san francisco, that's where governor jerry brown is going to be later on this morning. the speculation he is going to declare a drought emergency, making californians more aware of the doubt. it could open the flood gate to federal money for farmers. he's going to talk about a lot of things. >> three counties under a special drought designation which allows armor to apply for emergency loans. they have not called a state wide drought until 1992. >> it's the agricultural interest on high alert when it comes to this ridge of high pressure. we need the world. we grow a lot here in the state of california. as long as this ridge of high pressure is where it is we're not going to get rain. here's what's happening. so you think of the seam as a river of air. this is what carries our storm system across the u.s. from west to east. because of that ridge all of the rain, the storm systems

peggy bunker in san jose. it's not just the elderly at risk anymore. >> reporter: that's something that we talk about every year, especially if you have a compromised immune system. this year, it's aggressive strain of the h1n1 virus that has officials concerned. now we are getting reports of the second flu-related death here in the bay area. let's show you where these deaths took place after these people contracted the flu. yesterday, contra costa county revealed a 48-year-old woman died within the last week. she did have an underlying medical condition that preceded her contracting the flu. however, that condition was not revealed. last week, though, a santa clara county woman died, 41, from h1n1 strain. so the exact strain that the cdc is talking about. both relatively yoing wom lly yh dead from the flu. more states are reporting flu-related deaths and increasing numbers of people getting sick, even young people. sometimes you think it only affects the elderly. doctors are saying this year, young people can

i'm peggy bunker in for laura garcia-cannon. >>> a 19-year-old woman has died after being hit by a truck. she was walking and carrying her three-month-old infant walking with her 17-year-old sister. all three were hit by the truck. christie smith has the latest. did the driver stop? >> reporter: the driver did stop, is cooperating with fremont police. what he is saying is that, it was dark out here. it was before 10:00. we have a wide road, three turning lanes. he didn't see the trio when he was in the street. the 19-year-old woman was carrying her three-month-old baby boy along with the woman's 17-year-old sister. the baby thrown from the mom's arms and about 30 feet away into the street at paseo padre and mowry. a driver got out and helped and drove the child to the hospital. he is fighting for his life and is transferred to children's hospital in oakland for treatment. fremont police tried to do cpr on the mom on scene. she was taken to eden valley medical center where she died. the 17-year-old sister was treated as well. the driver at the time was not drinking. a horrible, horrible w

. >> i'm peggy bunker.reaking news about a missing pashlt from the san francisco general hospital. we learned that she has been found. christie smith is live in san francisco with the latest on this. good morning. >> good morning to you, peggy. a hospital spokesperson says she was found in the mission district and brought back this morning. it ended a pretty big search going on since 1:00 yesterday. that's when she was first reported missing. nurses saw her leave after the 34-year-old woman had surgery here. police were called in a missing person's report and one big concern is that she needed vital post-op medicine. police said she was homeless and was looked for in the tenderloin area. the hospital spokesperson says the new strength and a.w.o.l. proceed i procedures were used. months ago, a patient left her bed and was found dead in the stairwell. the spoke with the sheriff's department, they confirmed they did a campus wide search including all of the stairwells when she was first reported missing. they

peggy bunker has more on the security threat and what lawmakers are saying about safety at the games. >> good morning. with the sochi winter olympics about three weeks away this video posted on a gentleman haddy website well known for terrorist chatter shows two men discussing a present for all tourists who come over for the games. in the video the two men sit in front of a banner that wears a religious phrase associated with al qaeda. it's getting a lot of attention because these men are reportedly the suicide bombers responsible for last month's bombing in russia. it was at a train station that caused massive damage. another on a city bus. the bombings claimed the lives of over 30 people. in the video the men say the two bombings were just the first wave and the sochi olympics will bring, quote, a surprise to those who attend. russian president putin is promising stepped up squurt an unprecedented 40,000 members of law enforcement even with that some say it's too dangerous to go. >> i would not go. and i don't think i would send my family. >> putin said in a statement like any high

peggy bunker live at sfo where flyers arrive to find they may have a long wait ahead. >> reporter: you said it. good morning to you. a lot of people perhaps this is the first monday back to work or perhaps ending a hong extended vacation. and if those folks are coming to san francisco international airport looking to fly to the midwest or back east, they are facing delays or cancellations. 32 cancellations are reported here at sfo, the main airports affected if you have a flight scheduled today, that would be chicago, boston, new york city, and when we say new york, that is specifically jfk. all of what is called a polar vortex. it's a counterclockwise rotating pool of freezing air that has come down from canada and it's causing all of these headaches. yesterday, sunday, about 3,000 flights were canceled. you can imagine the domino effect. one woman wanted to get home. >> i got an e-mail saying my flight would be canceled for tomorrow morning, then i tried to call but i guess there was high call volume and i couldn't get through. >> reporter: that's tough because that's what we tell fo

peggy bunker has been investigating the crash. she'll have a live report coming up at 6:00. >>> the man accused of lighting several fires in a san jose neighborhood is expected in court. police say this man, 48-year-old patrick brennan, intentionally set at least 12 fires near downtown over five days. the police sergeant who cracked the case said he plugged the suspect's information into several data bases last sunday and brennan's profile kept coming up as a possible match. he matched bren tune a sketch and surveillance video. investigators say brennan lived in a trailer a few yards from a search investigators say he set on fire. they believe he started that massive warehouse fire last week. you can't forget that one. the fierce flames ripped through $125,000 square foot warehouse. no one was hurt in the fire. >>> now to the 49ers and their quest for six. the team will not play until later today. business as usual as the team, they hit the practice facility. >> players suiting up but before packing up to head out. bob is live in

peggy bunker joins us with more. >> good morning. you know, today's hearing centers around the state of massachusetts. this is brought to the forefront by 77-year-old grandmother, she wants to talk about reproductive health care facilities that established buffer zones that prevented her from approaching women contemplating getting an abortion and 35 feet is what they want people to stay back from at clinics. the zones are called buffer zones, marked by a yellow line. if a protester steps over, they're asked to move back. supporters say it's necessary as people entering and exiting the clinics have been subjected to taunts, even spit on, at times. they cite safety concerns after two receptionists in 2004 were shot and killed at a massachusetts clinic the abortion clinics representatives are free to speak but sidewalk counselors are not. >> it's not their messages can't be seen and heard, but it does protect women and administrative staff and doctors. >> a little bit from both side there's. sure to come up today the knack 2000 the sup

"today in the bay's" peggy bunker joins us in the studio with a look at how the cold snap is causing havoc. >> good morning. what a night for people down south a rare winter storm trapped people in place. snow and ice kept people in homes, cars. thousands of kids at school. the severe weather kept 4500 students at school in hoover, alabama, that's the video you're looking at there. 800 students stranded in birmingham. take a look at these pictures, alabama, kids there playing basketball, then later on hunkering down on the same floor to go to sleep. a lot of people had blankets there, brought out everything they could. they could not get away from the school building so that's where they slept. the governor said they did not dismiss the kids in time. >> we have several major areas of concern because some of the schools had not released the students early enough in the day to get home in the normal fashion before the roads became icy. >> now, even worse, 50 school kids in atlanta got stuck on buses overnight. the buss were on icy roads so they had to stay in place. we received word fr

. >>> good morning and thanks for joining us, i'm terry mcsweeney, peggy bunker has the day off. we're learning new details about the deadly flu bug going around. it has claimed nine lives so far. people are listening to health officials and getting their flu shots and i'm thinking that's exactly what health officials are saying. >> reporter: that's exactly right. i spoke with a, woer at the pharmacy here this morning, and he said they only have a few flu shots left and they're hoping to get some more in. i asked if they might be able to make it through the end of the day, and he said i just don't know. they have been really busy as the word spreads about this early and aggressive flu season. nine deaths so far in the bay area counties. one patient was an otherwise healthy 23-year-old. now, we did just hear from the california department of public health and they're reporting seven deaths with 28 more under investigation. patients are being created outside in a tent. they have two tents up now, but a spokesperson just told me they're going to consolidate to one today. healthy you

i'm scott mcgrew. >> i'm peggy bunker. breaking news overnight.y's first homicide of the year. this happened about 12:30 this morning on east san antonio street. officials have not released the victim's name or information about circumstances surrounding the shooting. neighbors said they heard the shots but didn't call police. a person driving by called 911 an hour later. >> we're learning more about an overnight fire at the chinese consulate in san francisco. the smell of gasoline still r air where officials say someone threw two buckets of the accelerant on the door, then lit it on fire. no injuries reported. the fire of course being investigated as an act of arson. >> a helicopter has evacuated 52 scientists and tourists stuck on a research ship in antarctica. it happened in under five hours but some people on board the ship have decided to stay where they are. tracie potts is monitoring the story from washington, d.c. the crew of that ship is staying put. >> reporter: the captain says the crew stays with the ship. they are apparently not in im

peggy bunker joins us now with a look at the poll numbers. >> good morning to you. tonight he lays out his plans for the sixth year of his presidency and the importance of the speech not underestimated. none of his top programs made it through congress. recent numbers show how disappointed americans are with the state of capitol hill. the president will step up to address the country with a 43% job approval rating. that is a tough number to rally the country on, take a look at this recent nbc news wall street journal poll which shows huge dissatisfaction. 68% of americans say the country is worse off since the president took office, 31% say we're better off. 60% of americans think that the country is headed in the wrong direction and a huge 70% of americans are dissatisfied with the economy. the most telling not placing the blame on the president alone, 81% disapprove of congress. the president's closest advisers say he's not one to be swayed by the polls, he relies on the personal stories of americans to gauge how he is doing. the bay area will be well represented

. >> i'm peggy bunker. we begin with a story new at 11:00 this morning, a bay area golf coach accused of abusing students was back in court this morning. bob ridell is live there this morning. >> good morning, peggy, andrew nezbit has been charged with ten new counts of abuse of a child. that makes seven boys that have come forward with these accusations. he did appear in superior court this morning, but did not enter a plea. instead he asked the judge for more time. his next court appearance is scheduled for february 20th. his mother, seen here comforting his wife who appeared to be very upset. she and his parents declined to speak with us as they left the building about an hour ago. nisbet taught golf in livermore. police arrested him last month after two students, both boys, accused him of sexually abusing him. it took place between plait 2009 and the start of spring 2012. taking place in his car, home, and out of town golf trips. he was a very popular person as a golf coach and successful, helping his s

. >> i'm peggy bunker. >>> the man accused of dousing the chinese concentrate late in san francisco with gasoline and setting it on fire is back in court this morning. christie smith is outside of the courthouse with the latest on that. >> reporter: it was a very brief court appearance for the man. it maybe lasted two to three minutes. he had the preegings explained to him with the help of than interpreter, but he did not enter a plea today. he had an attorney appointed to him. he was wearing red which i'm told is for protective custody. according to court documents he burns the concentrate late because he was hearing voices in chine chinese. they told reporters that someone brought containers of gasoline and lit them. he was arrested for arson and damaging the property of a foreign government. investigators say they have no reason to believe it had anything to do with terrorism or a political statement. >>> the concentrate late has called for more security provided by the u.s. government saying again that he is due back in court on january 15th to set a date for an arraignment. live in
