penndot taking advantage of a calm before the storm.rews working hard today getting trucks loaded up and ready for this pending storm. penndot plans to have trucks on the road as soon as the first flakes start to fly. fox 29's dave kinchen live in norristown tonight. dave? >> reporter: iain, right now trucks are loading up. they've been loading steadily getting ready to cover salt all across five counties here in our region. they are ready for this storm. as drivers gas up for a snowy monday morning commute and load up on supplies at the local wawa wawa penndot crews are doing some loading up their own scooping up thousands of tons of salt for trucks like this one to launch a winter counter assault taking aim at the a.m. rush. >> for tonight's operation into monday morning we'll have 394 penndot and contractor trucks out on the roads salting and plowing if necessary. >> reporter: salting spreading after midnight picks up on the brine already on the pavement around 3-inches of snow expected by tomorrow morning. >> well, i'm from californ

it caught motorist off guard and was dull for penndot to tackle.had crews on stand by nearly 150 of them, but because they knew that there was a possibility of freezing rain but they couldn't start to lay the salt until they saw that icy mix. otherwise the rain would have washed the salt right off the roadway. after the massive crash on i-76 witnesses tell us they saw penndot crews coming through to salt the road and help them turn around safely. because there is a chance for refreeze as the temperature dips tonight, penndot says it fully expects to have crews out there on the roadways to monitor the conditions ahead of tomorrow's rush. lucy and iain? >> all right. thank you very much, jenny. >>> water mains are still busting left and right. a big one on 12th street in philadelphia center city. that 12-inch break left the lose hotel wonder the businesses with no water. it's back on tonight. but took crews all night to fix that rupture. not only did the hotel lose water but power too after water leaked into the basement and shorted out the electrici

biggest penndot winter count's salt plan yet this season. they have thousands of tons of salt, behind me that will be loadedded up into, trucks. we will go to some video, and we shot video of the first truck, we saw actually getting salt added into it. it is one of 394 trucks that will be used in this operation what they are doing now is also putting brine on the road and relying on the brine laid from the previous storm friday night that went into saturday. now they are expecting to have 394 trucks on working starting tonight into tomorrow, and they are looking for one to 3 inches of snow on the ground and they say that they are focused on the morning drive. here's more on what to expect. >> the road are going to be saltedded but they will than wet. some back road may be snow covered. if you are traveling, if you need to get to work at 8:00 and you usually leave at 7:30, best advice is leave by 7:00 o'clock because you will need to give yourself a additional time to get to your destination. >> reporter: as you heard from caitlin moments ago

we know that there are 438 penndot contractor trucks and penndot trucks loading up with salt non-stoplly spraying it, refilling and coming back for more. they're working on 12-hour shifts. they expect to to do that through wednesday. we took a trip down 202. we saw very little traffic. people are heeding the warning to stay off the roads. want to let and about the pennsylvania turnpike, though. they are monitoring conditions there. could get a little dicey they're telling us between harrisburg and philadelphia. if that become the case, they're going to lower the speed to 45 miles an hour. penndot obviously urging people to stay off the roads tonight and tomorrow. if you have to drive, they're saying you want to at least give yourself about six car lengths distance between any other vehicles and especially they're worried about the wind gusts of 30 to 35 miles an hour. that could create white out conditions. not just for all of us, but for the drivers the penndot drivers as well. that would force them to the side of the road and kind of postpone their cleanup work. so again what we're

the ice that did this on sunday can't happen again, according to penndot. it's why john bolt and phil wideman have been out pouring thousands of gallons of brine in advance of wednesday's snow. >> it won't be a heavy, accumulating snow but the timing is such it will be in the afternoon so the evening rush hour on wednesday, motorists will need to get themselves extra time. our crews will be salting. >> reporter: the early afternoon snow is at the end of the school day which means superintendents like upper marian's jane callahan have to decide whether to cancel school or send kids home early. >> safety first and following that schedule we have parents that won't be home, so we'll send kids home. we need to make sure we have places for those kids to go. we need to make sure we have communications out. >> reporter: as penndot primes the roads, they say drivers have an obligation to actually pay attention. >> when precipitation falls and you have temperatures around the freezing mark there's a good chance they may be frozen. >> reporter: penndot says for some

>> reporter: well, we can tell you we've seen a number of penndot trucks whizzing by us tonight hereleast at this hour. but it came to a deadly halt early this morning during a multi vehicle pileup. as night fell and the temperatures dropped salt trucks began hitting the highways throughout the region trying to get ahead of roads that may glaze over with ice overnight. proactive attempt to try to prevent something like this from happening again. >> a big load of cars, a lot of mayhem and chaos going on. and. >> reporter: chaotic scene along ex 76 shortly before 7am. the multi vehicle pileup left one person dead. at least 30 others injured on the schuylkill expressway near the gulph mills exit. a mangled mess as far as the eye could see. as car after car collided with each other along an ice covered roadway. >> i saw a lot of people just not paying attention. driving way too quick. >> 10 minutes later a bunch of cars piled everywhere. so i had to back away. >> clearing the path through the wreckage was no easy tasks with salt trucks finally opening the westbound lanes eight hours afte

all we need is to look at penndot's salt usage record to illustrate the the disparity. last season up to this point penndot in the five county philadelphia a region had already used 45,500 tons of salt on roadways. this season during the same time frame it has used only 8230 tons. >> we will see what old man winter brings us with the on coming winter season. >> reporter: area hardware stores report a rush of customers stocking up on salt calcium chloride and ice melt. >> a as far as we are getting it in, we are selling it. >> reporter: what about the snowblowers. >> as fast as they are coming in, we are selling them. >> reporter: people are taking no chances after what happened last year. >> absolutely. >> reporter: karen kaufman was among those getting ready. >> last year we all thought probably the news guys aren't right, we will not get a storm we got the storm. you guys were right. >> reporter: one after the other. >> one after the other. >> reporter: owe ready or not, here comes the the snow. penndot crews will be on stand bias major roadways beginning at midnight

penndot is watching. traffic cameras are on the look-out for wrecks and other trouble spots caused by slick roads and the snowfall. they work to start salt brining those roadways at midnight on 95, 76, the 676 and the roosevelt. even though just one to 2 inches of snow are in the forecast penndot did call and reinforcement, some 200 trucks are pitching in, they also called in 200 rather, 20, rather contractors to come in and help out as well. now, the brunt of the snow is not due to fall until about 8:00 for that commute. but penndot crews and drivers are being urged to take it slow out there. >> with certain vehicles, even though it is just one to 2 inches sometimes these vehicles they will fish and everything like that. so we can't do. that will we have to drive our other vehicles. >> we urge motorists to be very careful to drive at reduced speed to also allow additional time, to get to their destinations and maintain at least twice the normal following distance between themselves and the vehicle in fro
