pete, i'll start with you. set the scene for us. what should judge kavanaugh expect tomorrow. >> just to sit. for the first day tomorrow, it'll be almost all opening statements by every member of the judiciary committee. then when the day is about over, and everyone is tired of sitting there, he'll have his brief opening statement. the questioning won't start until wednesday and go into thursday. the other thing he should expect, i think, kristen, is to be confirmed. it's a simple matter of aris ma tick -- arithmetic. it appears the republicans have the votes. nonetheless, the hearing will shed important light on his views on some of the most important issues before the supreme court. he has been saying in meetings with some senators that he considers roe v. wade to be settled law. that's the same term chief justice john roberts used during his confirmation hearing. doesn't seem likely if he's confirmed that the supreme court would quickly, or maybe within years, vote to flat out overturn roe. also seems likely with justice kennedy

matt and pete, i'm going to start with you. matt, this is your guys' bombshell here. as you might expect, we got a lot of questions also about your sourcing on this because there's a lot of angles to this. but let me start with the pushback that you've heard from justice both via our reporting here at nbc news and frankly the way rosenstein wanted to push back against your story. how confident are you of the wire part of this story? how confident are you of the 25th amendment part of the story? >> we wouldn't put it in "the new york times" if we weren't confident about it, chuck. but, you know, look, i think it makes sense that the justice department is going to say, well, he wasn't being serious because the alternative is to say, yeah, yeah, i absolutely thought that i should wear a wire. that presumably would be the end of rod rosenstein as the deputy attorney general. so, you know, we understand that there's going to be pushback to stories. what we know is that the acting fbi director at the time, andy mccabe, who was in the running to be the permanent fbi director

minnesota eight is pete up in the iron range. nolan retired rather than running against pete.nd pete is like straight out of central casting for northern minnesota. played professional hockey. he was a deputy shot in the line of duty. so he's got a law enfort background. his wife is an air force veteran who served in the gulf war. they are -- the family is very well-known in the iron range. just yesterday the mines got turned back on which has been pete's biggest issue. it's an issue that plays really well for our side and allows a lot of the labor guys to feel comfortable with pete. i think those two races, we're on offense. the two, paulsen and lewis, are tough races. i think both of those are real, real races. if you want to belle weather to see whether -- belweather to see whether we control the house, if we win those races, we will be in the majority. if we win one of the incumbent races and one of the challenger races we're probably in the majority. if we lose both the incumbent races and win none of the challenger races, we are probably in the minority. and that's somet

i want to go pete williams. we don't actually have him. pete, is that you?is. >> go for it, pal. >> what we are told is rod rosenstein is on his way to the white house right now. he's been summoned to the white house, we are told. the expectation is, and here is where there's a disconnect. the white house is saying that he will resign but it's my understanding that he has told people that he will not resign and if the white house wants him out, he will have to be fired. so, we'll know the answer to this in a few minutes. this all, of course, is after last friday's explosive story in the new york times saying in a meeting in may of last year, he suggested wearing a wire to tape the president in his discussions with potential fbi directors and, at one point, rosenstein talked of trying to invoke the 25th amendment on disqualification of a president. over the weekend and late friday, rosenstein issued two statements denying either of the two things happened. other people in the meeting say he made the comment about wearing a wire sarcastically. apparently this
