pfizer says it's only for certain types of people. moderna the same way. why is there a discrepancy here? >> it's not the companies that are saying it. it's fda so far and soon to be cdc. so not trying tow lay it off on the companies. the problem is the immunity from the j&j vaccine has never been as high as it has been with moderna and pfizer, and it also seems to be waning faster. so that's why the push is on for j&j. the others still have quite a bit of residual immunity associated with them. >> mixing and matching. i'm a pfizer guy. at some point if i'm eligible, am i able to recommend it to do moderna or j&j? >> i don't think so. i think the real question is if you got j&j, should you get an mrna of pfizer or moderna vaccine? the fda has not considered that question yet although they started to today. and they pushed that off, i think, into december. but it's going to become -- it will eventually come up again. and, you know, i can tell you that in england, they give both astrazeneca, which is a vaccine not dissimilar from j&j in terms of how it works

so pfizer now, if you had pfizer more than six months ago and fall into certain high-risk categories, you can get a booster as we speak. yesterday, that was set in motion for moderna, and now they're looking at johnson & johnson. i was speaking with the chair of the committee that's doing this work, a panel of outside vaccine advisers to the fda, and he said, look, it's really important for johnson & johnson that people get that second shot. look at what arnold monto had to say. he said it's critical to get the j&j people protected. they are starting at a lower level of protection. moderna and pfizer soon after original shots with them you're about 94% to 95% protected against getting sick with covid-19. but for johnson & johnson soon after vaccination it's 72%. that's still a good number, but it's not as good as moderna and pfizer. that's why he said that. also at this meeting we're expected to hear a discussion about mixing and matching. for example, if you got johnson & johnson the first time around, say six months ago, could you now get a pfizer or moderna booster? it's just a dis

so, why a half shot when we were getting a full shot of pfizer for a booster, was me der that a moreowerful shot to begin with? >> yeah, so, david, thank you for having me back. first of all, they absolutely follow the same blueprint, same groups of individuals, high risk people getting the booster. and the half dose is because, in fact, the original dose of moderna is more powerful than the original dose of pfizer, so the evidence says you really only need a half dose to get the benefits of the booster. >> what the data shows so far. i know they're going to take up this idea of mixing and matching. i don't want our viewers who got the johnson & johnson one-shot vaccine to think we've forgotten them, because the j&j booster will be discussed tomorrow along with this idea of mixing and matching. so, what do you suspect happens on both friends? >> yeah, so, first of all, there's no doubt in my mind that we're going to hear about an authorization for a booster for j&j. i think it's clearly necessary and i'd be very surprised if that different happen. there is some evidence that mixing a

moderna and pfizer very similar.ut they also have some differences that might actually give you a broader immunity. so it doesn't seem like there is any drawbacks. there could be potential advantages to having more pro roe bust or at least widespread production by mixing and matching. we will get more data on that, but talking to some of these trial investigators, that's what they seem to have been seeing so far. we will see how it sort of plays out in the real world. >> from what we know now about the boosters being considered, is there one that you think is better than the others? >> well, again, we have been following these trials for some time, and i don't know that we could say that for sure. there has been a lot of interest with j&j, should it be boosted with an mrna vaccine. but as far as better, does it offer broader or more durable protection, i don't know if we can say that yet. we can convincingly say you don't necessarily get the same shot. does it offer an advantage? i think the jury is still out on that

but let's say you have a severe reaction to pfizer and moderna.t's say that -- that you also have had a prior case of myocarditis in that case you might considered switching to a johnson & johnson vaccine. but sticking to the same brand sounds just fine. but if you got moderna and you got pfizer for the first time, it's also ok too. >> what about the johnson & johnson vaccine? how should people who got the single johnson & johnson vaccine look at boosters? >> this is very different. i'm one of the 15 million americans who got one dose johnson & johnson vaccine for women under the age of 50 which is the category i am in, i would not recommend that they get a second johnson and johnson booster. i would recommend that they receive one of the pfizer or moderna vaccine, one of the mrna dosesecause the johnson and johnson has been associateed with a very rare but very serious blood clotting disorder. this is not a run of the mill blood clot. s that very serious disorder that can be fatal. again, very rare. but for younger women there is an option. there

pfizer's booster was authorized last month, but the c.d.c.ot taken a stand on whether people should mix and match doses, leaving it up to the individual instead. >> there may be some people who might prefer another vaccine over the one that they received, and the-- the current c.d.c. recommendations now make that possible. >> reporter: a small n.i.h. study awaiting peer review looked at which combinations of brands offered the best protection. coming in first, three doses of moderna offered the highest level; followed by two shots of pfizer, then moderna. anyone who received j&j's one-shot would be more protected if they got either the pfizer or moderna shot as a booster. but, an f.d.a. review of the n.i.h. study concluded, it's not possible at this time to determine preerred boosters. the c.d.c. also urged pregnant women to get a booster shot. currently, only 34% of pregnant women are fully vaccinated. the c.d.c. chief also said today, they may need to update the definition of "fully vaccinated" in the future, which means people may need a b

we know pfizer submitted data to the f.d.a.ng its vaccine is highly protective for children age 5 to 11. what does this mean for potential f.d.a. approval for children getting the vaccine that young? >> well, the f.d.a. is going to be reviewing all these data tuesday when they meet and then the c.d.c. is going to be reviewing it the week after. right now the date are encouraging. they're showing that in addition to the vaccines being safe so far in the 2000 or so 5 to 11-year-olds being studied, the vaccines produce a strong antibody response and we have data coming out of pfizer showing that the vaccines also appear to protect well against symptomatic disease, almost 91%. it will be up to the f.d.a. and c.d.c. to weigh the risks and benefits and to say are they going to make as full-throwed a recommendation as they will for older individuals, as in might they make a more limited recommendation saying only high risk children get the vaccine, we don't know. we shall see when they review the data next week. >> nawaz: we'll be fol
