>> reporter: if you look over here, you can see the pg&e crews that are lined up. four vehicles out here, more on the way. one of the crew members said they'll have a lot of equipment out here. if you look at the two-towers, it's the second tower in question. in the trees you can see what's left of this transformer that came down. it was apparently very loud. some people reported hearing sounds of an explosion. an acre of vegetation burned, put out by the fire departments helping. it did cause a power outage in this area. we're standing next to the microsoft campus. there are lights on here. we're not sure, at this point how many people are affected. part of the neighborhood is affected. this is the trail head area, as you can see, is still taped off by a police line. still pretty dangerous out here. they don't want anyone getting close by. they'll have a lot of heavy equipment in this area. i asked them how long it was going to take to fix this problem out here. we heard initial reports that maybe until about 8:00 a.m. the crews here say they are still assessing t

pg&e is still dealing with the power outage this morning. cuff the fire did not cause any major damage but it did not out power. pg&e had to shut down power to about three habits of the customers. it lost power even on the microsoft campus. craig skalar is live with an update. >>craig: pg&e crews are out here right near the microsoft campus. that's our is where the transmission line came down causing a fire. this is 120 ft. off of the ground. half they have been nipping around the edges in the grounding of mind. i have been told vice the people at pg&e, by the time the sun goes down, around 5:00 p.m. is when this will be completely repaired. the good is is there were able to get our diverted to other transmission lines in and be able to restore power. time is not a factor in terms of people who might be concerned about not having power. thick crews have not gone up there yet. they say by daylight they will start restoring the power lines. sixth returning to the nfl playoffs tomorrow. if if the 49ers win the game the mayor will receive louisi

there were 40,000 people that called pg and e about their gas. that means they call turned off their gas? did they need to do that? when do you have to? when there is a problem. how long did you think it takes pg and e to get out and turn it back on? 45,000 people. days weeks, may be a month. who has seen this in the streets. a lot of muck is in there is it's full of dirt and weeds you turn it to the right to tighten it and left to loosen it. your home work you have to look at your house, pop open the lid, look in there see what's going on in there it's not nice and clean like this. who has seen this around their house? everybody. each meter has a shut off. you want to find out where your gas meter is. you can keep track of your usage but you will know how to shut it off. here's the shut off. i have some tools up here, you can look at these. any hardware store has these. they fit on this and it allows you to turn off the gas. when we talk about the wheels it's these on top. if you have a broken pipe. they will spin like mad. when it's daylight, g

pg&e crews have about six or seven crew members out here. they actually shut the lights down on the transformer. this is my light on it right now. that is a high place to go. they have their work cut out for them. they closed off the back in here and unfortunately this is not a through street it would make the a lot easier for people that were getting ready to go to work. a number of people went out back to take a closer look with their flashlights but they are not telling us a lot of details as to how they will get this done. it is supposed to be fixed by 8:00 a.m., but again we have a situation like this and you have a high area like that was a lot of work ahead of you and it is a moving target and you never really know. last i heard about 200 homes had power but that was several hours ago. this is a transmission line the power goes long distances from here. back to you. >> darya: has anyone talked about why the transformer blew? views >>reporter: they are not saying anything about that yet. >> mark: 01 to the san francisco 49ers, the game

last summer, pg&e essentially overpaid on this hedge. it couldn't know prices would collapse due to oversupply. but winter prices are so low right now the gas it buys on the open market wiped out that problem and then some. >> our prices this january are actually ry slightly lower than they were in january, 2011. and i think going forward, we'll see prices come down even a little bit more. >> that actually is really good. it makes me a lot happier now, and not so concerned with when i turn up the dial. >> the gas prices we're seeing now are lower, adjusted for inflation than we saw during the real cheap gas times of the 1990s. this is really historically cheap natural gas. >> reporter: school of business economists say part of the oversupply comes from a controversial source. >> a big part of that is this new technology, hydraulic fracking that brought gas from places we didn't expect. >> reporter: kit cause environmental damage ranging from contaminated water to minor earthquakes. >> i'd be willing to pay higher gas prices if we didn't

this is baffling pg&e crews behind me. here is the main concern, it's the second tower on your right. someone heard an explosion or a pop on the tower and you can still see the cables hanging over some of these trees here over the stevens creek trail. this is causing concern for pg&e. this is near the microsoft campus north of moffett field. drivers reported seeing a bright glow coming from the area. at this point pg&e is trying to determine if it was a transformer that blew. the explosion caused a minor vegetation fire around the trail. that was put out immediately. 372 customers remained without pow power. power was restored after midnight. these are not your residential power lines, these are the big high voltage transmission lines. they created quite a headache for the utility. part of stevens creek trail are also closed because there are still some of those downed power lines, and crews can't say when things will be back to normal. they say they are waiting for heavy equipment to arrive here at the scene so they are w

. >>> we've got a disturbing admission to tell you about pg&e. the san francisco chronicle reporting the utility lost track more than 300 miles of gas pipeline. the company said it found maps of 140 miles of uninspected urban pipes on top of the maps of 160 miles of pipeline it admitted to losing track of back in december. pg&e has reduced pressure on these pipes until they say they can be inspected. the latest announcement could mean more fines for the utility. >>> in the meantime "the mercury news" reporting that pg&e has advised its gas pressure procedures in populated areas. it admitted some were too high for densely populated areas. as a result the utility says it's adopting stricter guidelines for inspecting and monitoring urban gas lines and increasing training for employees. state regulators had ordered pg&e to review its pipelines following the san bruno explosion in september of 2010. >>> governor jerry brown will give his state of the state address this morning. it's expected to be on education. the governor is expected to call for les

. >>> allegations that pg&e moved to stop bonuses among the stinging claims released from audits this week. that focus on finances strikes at the heart of criticism that pg&e has put profits before safety in the years leading up to the deadly 2010 san bruno pipeline explosion. the puc says in the previous decade, pg&e collected $430 million from its gas transmission and storage pipelines but made safety a low priority. the chronicle is reporting a second audit found in the three years before the explosion, the company spent $56 million a year on stock awards, incentives, and compensation for executives. >>> pg&e says all power has been restored after last night's brush fire in mountainview. take a look at the view here. caused outages to more than 370 customers. fire officials say downed power lines may have caused this blaze on la abanida street across from the microsoft campus in mountainview. the 101/shoreline exit. approximately one acre burned in this fire. however, there was no structural damage reported. someone living in a nearby mobile home had to be transported to the hospit
