this is a peek at plymouth. a travel ban is in effect for the counties in connecticut where between 12 and 18 inches of snow fell there. meanwhile, in new york after the city of 8 million was brought to a virtual stand still, travel bans have been lifted but you would be hard pressed to find traditional new york traffic that we all know and really don't love but we know it well. most train service and subways are back up and running but on a very limited schedule. it is like waking a sleeping giant today in new york. for more on what we can expect in the next 24 hours, let's get to our meteorologist, bill karins. start with new york and work our way up to where the more serious trends you're following now in the weather. >> in new york people are starting to venture outside, realizing it is safe to do that now. low wind chills greet you in the teen range with light snow still falling, it looks more pretty than anything else. this is not the dangerous side of the storm. new york city was on the far western edge o

we've got visibility down to about a quarter mile here in the plymouth area. other than that everybody pretty much stay home in massachusetts, mass transit shut down all streets are closed. everybody is basically hopefully staying home and hopefully staying warm. we're keeping our fingers crossed we don't have a lot of power going out. i can tell you our hotel parking lot is full of power company trucks. they are ready to pounce on this once the weather backs off later today and tonight. >> mike seidel, thank you. nbc meteorologist bill karins is tracking the storm. bill. >> good morning to you, milissa. tracking the storm all night, the storm has blown up just as explosive and big and powerful as they expected but just about 25 to 50 miles further to the east. that's more out to sea. that has spared a few areas and the worst of the storm. mostly sections of new jersey philadelphia new york city who did get hit but not as bad as expected. all the way to the hudson valley, albany, new york area. the storm itself is peaking out intensity, benchmark, a spot off c

the plymouth meeting mall. traffic is not moving too bad if delaware and south jersey are getting hit the so hard. not so much here in plymouth meeting. something here people we talked to were okay with. for many like these kid in plymouth elementary snow meant heading home, early dismissal some high schoolers didn't think it was worth it. >> it is not worth it getting out of school early. >> i don't think so but i'm not complaining. >> reporter: but for others snow means work, cue drivers of the 333 penndot trucks that will be salting and plowing roads throughout the evening all the while dealing with rush hour traffic. >> it makes our jobs harder because as you know, rush around here slows down traffic speeds so our trucks got to go with the speed of traffic. >> reporter: hen dot has spread 25,000 tons of salt this year. guys that at this landscaping company have not spread that much but they did cover sidewalks all along germantown pike. their opinion on the snow. >> snow is money but snow is also hard work

and so people in traditional places that flood, places like scituate and plymouth are watching their property right now because this storm could bring some storm surge and some coastal flooding. >> very good point about the high tide. chris, thank you, sir. much appreciated it. chris pollone, nbc in boston for us. want to check in with john yang from portland maine. as we can see there, the conditions look worse than what we saw with chris' shot. >> reporter: that's right, thomas. it is really picking up here. we're in the building phase here, the snow is coming down much heavier than it has been in the past couple of hours. the winds are picking up. there is not much snow on the ground. less than half an inch. officially a tenth of an inch has fallen since midnight. i can tell you, there is a time and temperature sign that is over the street. it is elevated over the street. it is about two blocks behind me. when we came out here about three hours ago, i was able to see it clearly and we're watching the temperatures drop. but within the past hour, the snow has started coming down so

the weather channel's mike seidel in plymouth massachusetts. there, the snow looks unbelievable. good morning, mike. >> hours of 35 to 40 sustained. 39 is the threshold for a tropical storm. 64 miles per hour in the past hour. and the end result with this kind of snowfall rate of an inch an hour. and it's impossible to pressure snow out here because, look at this. there's ground. you can see the grass. and there's about a three-foot drift. in the back there, now, that one back there. that has to be about five feet. i will venture out there at some point. i may need a rope to get me pulled out of there. but the winds coming off the north atlantic. and what we're seeing as we approach high tide in the next hour or so out here is overwash and the wave action in plymouth harbor harbor. it's a big square parking lot. it's now completely under water. i can see that the whole parking lot has water in it. in fact, my producer is over here right now. shooting some of that with our go pro camera. you get a sense of what it's like to be in a blizzard. i checked the observation guys at plymo

and on plymouth township at hallman avenue and pastell, use caution past this accident. this is the only accident so far of the morning. >>> the sleet and freezing rain could create a morning rush hour nightmare for drivers across the area. katy zachry is patrolling the area on route 1 in delaware county. katy, what are the conditions like? >> reporter: hi tracey. you can see right now we are in springfield, delaware county where we are seeing the light rain. it is very intermittent but has wet the roadways. so be careful of that. no freezing at this time. earlier this morning we were along 76 right outside of philadelphia where there was some freezing rain coming down. we have not seen the freezing rain conditions continue over the last hour. just as i said some light rain. but right now as you can see we're getting onto 476 and the blue route. we're going to head north and west. then west to the exit where we have been watching the radar and see that more icy conditions are headed toward people in that area. if you're getting up at the early hour and hitting the roads,

that's the parking lot here in plymouth. so the whole parking lot is under water. the coastal flood warning, this one goes until 7:00. but then we have another one, they upgraded the watch to a warning for 3:00 to 7:00 this afternoon because this wind is going to be unrelenting, all day long. we're gusting now over 50 miles an hour, taped at 64. they had gusts of hurricane force down in i believe in nantucket and across the cape gusting up over 70 miles an hour. all the power outages are down here on the south shore, south coast and the cape. i want to show you some of the drifts. some of these are 3 or 4 1/2 footers. all the snow we had, i don't know how much we actually that. it is impossible to measure in this area. easily over a foot of snow. we have got another 8 to 12 inches through today. the winds are going to be howling until this evening. the blizzard warning goes until 1:00 a.m. wednesday morning. we have another, what's that that's a long time another 20 hours, 18 hours. and these drifts back here cover the entire front yard. the winds are howling and w

the weather channel's mike seidel is in plymouth massachusetts. you have to see the pictures coming from there. let's look at what mike was able to file. >> we just had a gust here betty. 64 miles an hour. that's 10 under hurricane-force gustwise. we're sustained at 40. this is a tropical storm. this is the kind of wind we have for severe thunderstorms because the cutoff there is a minimum 58 miles an hour. these are 3 to 4-foot waves. where i walked before i walked through there for the weather channel. you walk through here and your boot gets down here and you're wondering if you're going to get out. what i need is a pair of snowshoes to walk on top of these drifts. we're going to be in this most of today. the snowfall rate may back off a little bit. but boy, these winds are not going to back off until dinnertime. that's why we have the blizzard warning through tuesday evening, through later on tonight. then we're going to keep dealing with that. our concern, a lot of the locals is the power going out. so far in the area between end star and gri

right now the snow is getting underway here at plymouth over in boston.as flights coming in and out until 7:00 and that is it until wednesday. and then they have to dig out. when it snows 2 to 3 inches an hour and with the wind shear, you can't keep up with the snow coming down and once you plow it just drifts again. you go right through and it drifts back over. so it is like a catch 22. so until the winds back off and the snow rate backs up up here which won't be until tomorrow evening, there is going to be a lot of areas where you just can't go. in fact that is why there is a travel band here kicking in at midnight tonight for everyone except essential personnel like police and fire. can you really see -- let's look at this real quick, the snow blowing across the parking lot. i think it looks like fargo. but you can see the waves blowing across the parking lot as we just get underway here in plymouth massachusetts, on the south shore of massachusetts. i'll be out here tonight and tomorrow morning, i can't wait to see how it ends up. i've been in some do

i'm weather channel meteorologist mike seidel in plymouth. aveling to massachusetts or anyone traveling to massachusetts or rhode island should be advised that their travel bans are still in effect. >> and that was governor connecticut governor malloy moments ago with an update with travel in connecticut. some of the biggest weather related problems around nantucket island off the massachusetts coast which has been dealing with hurricane-force winds. power was out throughout the morning. local officials are dealing with that and heavy flooding. william pitman is chief of police on nantucket and joins me by phone. first of all, the power, do you have power back yet? >> we don't. we are close to finding out whether our efforts to repair the power have been successful but we're still probably 30 minutes or so away from learning the extent of it. >> and what about the flooding and damage from -- you had hurricane-force winds. there's, of course a lot of historic buildings. what do you know about the damage assessment? >> the good thing is that we

tell somebody right now in plymouth mass in nantucket, in worcester that the storm didn't pan out. they'll tell you it did. in new york it didn't. down through the jersey coast, we didn't see blizzard conditions. but this storm was on track for much of the forecast area. i've been a meteorologist now for 15 years, over 15 years. i can remember when i first started, you know. i was reminded that whether is emotional for people. you know it's like the difference between partly cloudy and partly sunny. part anyly sunny says better. it's emotional, i get it. businesses have effected. i understand that. i get the frustration but i also think we have to keep in mind you have to keep people safe. the national weather service, that is what they did. if they did this on the toer side and they didn't preb dikt anything and worcester got hit with 30 inches of snow and lives were lost that would be a lot worse. so i think we would have to re-examine things. if the forecast was wrong in that other way. >>,many s we'll leave it there, thank you. >>> snow and heavy winds continue to pound the new

the weather channel's mike seidel is in plymouth massachusetts, with more on the impact there, especiallythe south shore of massachusetts, the wind gusted over 50 miles an hour for eight consecutive hours and at high tide early this morning the water came in here to the front yard of the east bay. this whole area was under water as we took that surge. there were evacuations up to the north, nantucket, the entire island, all of the power has been knocked out and thousands without power on the south shore and across the cape and islands. the other issue is all of the snow, these winds peaking out 60 miles per hour combined with 18 inches of snow and this is what you end up with huge massive drifts. i'm walking on top of those. some of these back here up to 4 feet. that's all you see around town. blowing and drifting snow even hard to keep your balance. the snow is going to wind down through the afternoon hours. we're not going to get the intensity we had overnight of 1 to 2 inches per hour but the winds will howl until dinner time. they'll slowly back off later tonight. but we have another

plymouth county they have a lot of snow more than two feet of snow and they have heavy sustained winds, more than 60 miles per hour. the wind is still an issue but it's not as big a factor as it was earlier. we're in a town right on the atlantic ocean, and the coastal communities are used to getting some flooding. earlier today, the road that we were on was completely wiped out. there's lots of debris left over from the remnants of that and they could expect another 3 to 6 inches in this area if you can believe it. though the worst may be over and that's good news here for the people of boston and beyond. john? >> absolutely. as you say, the snow is starting to ease up. the winds are slowly decreasing. the travel band has been lifted. any indication of how long this cleanup will take any idea when i guess everything gets back to normal? >> reporter: the good thing is that the local municipality and state agencies have been cleaning as they go along. you see the plows in the roads that we've been watching. we're the only car other than the emergency vehicles on the road right now. so cl

the adams lived on their plymouth avenue home. i'm sorry i never had the opportunity to meet her in person. but within a week of the couple moving senior residence in san mateo. ms. adams died. today i would like to remember ms. adams. the second person who passed away in december and because of breaks and everything else i couldn't get this together, that is laura eli. she was born in china january 7, 1933, and second child and only daughter in her family. her father emigrated in 1921 where he worked as a cook and later opened a restaurant. in 1949 she and her brother joined her father in san francisco. her mother and young brother followed suit in 1952. i didn't realize the connection but alex was a classmate of mine in school. he she had very little schooling. thanks to a large part to pair tutoring from chinatown youth club where she met the man she eventually married and the late historian and former long life friend. outgoing and up beat laurel enjoyed drama and good food especially when shared with friends all of whom share
