randi kaye cnn, new york. >> let's talk about this with our panel. david soucie and david gallo.ked about the weather. obviously, that is a problem in and of itself but there are also other problems with the search going on including the fact that this area is very well-trafficked and there are a lot of cargo ships in the waters. explain how that affects the search for the black boxes. >> one of the things we learned, especially from mh 370 is that when they thought they were listening to pings from the black box, they may have been hearing voice from their own shipper or maybe shark tagging. i took a quick glimpse of where the search is going on and counted dozens of cargo ships and tankers traversing through the area just commercial ships and that putting a lot of sound in the water making things more difficult, as does rough weather put sound in the water. so they really do need quiet as best as they can get it to be efficient at locating the black boxes. >> david soucie, obviously, the shallowness of the jabba sea certainly gave people confidence that the black boxes and the

we go to cnn's randy kaye. she is live for us now in new london, connecticut. what are you seeing there? >> reporter: we're seeing a lot of wind and the wind is definitely picking up. they were telling us we were going to get winds about 60 miles per hour. but in new london connecticut where we are, they are about 40 miles per hour. the snow is coming down about 4 inches per hour. this town is virtually shut down. the only thing we're seeing on the streets right now, ever since the travel ban went into effect about 9:00 everyone's supposed to stay there for a few days maybe. but all we're seeing now are a few people walking, a few peek walking their dogs, but in terms of vehicles we're only seeing police vehicles and plows, you see a gentleman there walking along, enjoying the wintry weather. every time we get out of the car we think maybe it's going to be a little better but it is actually getting much much worse. we talked to some of the folks in the neighborhood and they're very concerned about the power going off. they're expecting maybe 120,000 people losi

randi kaye is in new london connecticut for us again tonight. looked bad last night. how is it tonight? >> reporter: anderson i'm happy to tell you it's better tonight. not seeing the whiteout conditions that i was experiencing last night when we were on the air. the temperatures about 19 degrees. it feels more like 3 degrees. the wind is 22 23 miles per hour. we got word from the state that the travel ban has been lifted as of this afternoon. a lot of folks are out and about today. the roads are still pretty slick. there's a lot of snow on the ground. i had a hard time getting around today just walking around. we had to dig our own car out, took a couple hours before we even left the hotel to check out the area. here's why it's so hard to get around. the snow is so deep. we brought in measuring stick just to show you and show ourselves just how deep it is. if you can zoom in leon about 26 27 inches there. that's how deep it is around town here. that's why a lot of folks are staying put. it's not so much fun trying to get around anderson. >> i understand some resident

randi kaye joins me now. what's it like there right now? >> it's getting worse, anderson.ve been here for a couple of hours. we had light snow when we first got here. now the flurries are actually bigger the snow is thicker. it feels like it's poking you in the face. it's starting to stick. if you look done oun the ground here the sidewalk where we are, this had a light dusting and now there's a fair amount of snow you're able to kick around. it's also getting colder. we had this temperature gauge with us in the car when it was 80 degrees in the car. it says 40. there's no way it's 40 degrees out here, but that was because it was in the car with us. it's dropping rapidly. the wind is also kicking up. we're expecting winds here anywhere from 40 to 60 miles per hour and this snow is supposed to be falling at up to four inches an hour. so i think we are just starting to get some of the worst parts of what we are expecting to get hit with overnight here in new london, connecticut, anderson. >> in the last hour the connecticut spokesperson expressed concern that the people were
