nbc bay area's bob redell is there. what are the students who are attending today -- what has it been like for them this morning? >> reporter: many did not show up. i just spoke up with vallejo unified and they tell us there's about 1,280 kids and this morning roughly 350 of them stayed home because of the shooting that took place pretty much where i'm standing just outside the entrance to the school here across the street in front of the campus. as you can see, vallejo police did drive by the school several times this morning as parents dropped off their kids. the district says they will have more staff patrolling the campus and they have counselors on site for any students or staff who want to talk about what happened yesterday. now, this video is from the blog vallejo crime and safety and you can see it captured the moments leading right up to the shooting, and you can hear there the sound of the gunshots themselves. it happened around 3:40 yesterday afternoon. police say there was an altercation involving students o

. >> "today in the bay's" bob redell joins us. the family is taking legal action against alameda county. >>> the family of 8-year-old sophia mason, they say they have begun legal proceedings against alameda county for not listening to concerns. california attorney general rob bonta and merced police announced the arrest of donte jackson out of newark, in connection with sophia's death. his girlfriend and sophia's mother samantha johnson was already charged with her daughter's murder after the 8-year-old girl was found dead in merced in march. we learned sunday sophia had been dead for a month. she had been extremely malnourished. the police lieutenant said this case is the most disturbing and horrific he has ever seen. the family's lawyer said there were eight referrals to child and family services about the abuse of sophia but only three of those referrals were investigated. >> they said to us and to our family there was no -- it was unfounded. all of the complaints, even sophia's complaints, were unfounded. now that she's dead,
