>> reporter: we're here on redwood road. the winery is a couple of miles up the road.arly this morning, 4:00, people called 911 when they heard a pg&e transformer blow out caused by this massive mudslide. it started 500 yards up this mountain and we're told this debris could take about a week to clear. >> we're looking at three to 5,000 cubic yards of debris. >> reporter: 400 truckloads of mud and debris. steve with the public works department said this is the largest mudslide he's ever seen in the county. 15 miles away people were diverted after a huge tree slammed into a power line. this man will have to wait for hours to get into their house. while he waits for pga crews to clear the area, many kept a close eye on the napa river that overflowed its banks. you can see where the water rushed over the road. pga crews have cut the power to this area so we're told that it is safe. but unfortunately the ground is uncertain so the crews cannot move in here to start clearing out this area. there are 500 homes on the other side of this mudslide. they have another way out but

this is the redwood golf course, redwood canyon golf course. much of it as you can see now is under water. many of the fairways are under water. we talked with an east bay regional parks police lieutenant who told us this is the first time he's seen it like this in his 17 years with the district. thanks to an overflowing creek, a luncheon for retired school teachers turned into a rescue mission for the alameda county fire department. after san leandro creek burst its banks and flooded much of the redwood canyon golf course, leaving the clubhouse cut off just as the women were arriving for lunch. >> it was really unbelievable because this is castro valley. >> reporter: the alameda county fire department came to the rescue, along with east bay regional parks police, and used their rigs to drive the women to safety. >> so there were seven of us in there and we seven got a lunch. good lunch. >> reporter: earlier in martinez, it was a close call for earl heaps, asleep in his home when it seemed or sounded like the sky was falling. >> all of a sudden

we'll show you the damage after a redwood tree crashed into their home.ext:a principal stabbed at an east bay school... what we know about the person now in police custody. police have a 20-year-old man in custody after they believe he went to a private school in berkeley...and stabbed a staff member there this afternoon. authorities say, angel juarez was arrested... after witnesses positively identified him as the stabbing suspect. officers say, at about two in the afternoon... juarez came to the private school called via center on sixth street in berkeley. that's when, they say, he stabbed a staff member ... and then took off down university avenue. the extent of that person's injuries is unknown. police found juarez running over the interstate -880 overpass .. and placed him under arrest. a california man who used a woman he took hostage as a human shield from police gunfire - will spend life in prison. it happened after a bank robbery in stockton back in 2014. the hostage: 41-year-old misty holt-singh was killed during the nearly hour-long chase and s

flooding shuts down parts of highway 101 in redwood city for several hours this morning. the lanes have since reopened - but not before causing a major traffic back up and several collisions. kron four's will tran shows us what happened. the heavy rainfall in the overnight hours caused flooding and that caused accidents.this is northbound 101 through redwood city near whipple avenue and you can see caltrans on the scene. they have been here for hours trying to remove the flood. at 5 o'clock in the morning standing water on the roadway caused multiple accidents. chain reaction accidents where cars were slamming into each other. that forced chp to get cars off the roadway at woodside drive. then at around 6 in the morning they were able to open up lanes 3 4 and 5 but it was still bumper to bumper traffic for miles as far back as university avenue. the heavy rainfall for the past couple of days and weeks that the mud and water have clogged up the storm drains. they had to bring out a giant vacuum to suck all the debris out of the drains. keep in mind this is just a band aid

michelle robert is there with the road closures. >> reporter: we're here on redwood road. early this morning, about 4:00, crews say people called 911 when they heard the pg&e transformer blow out caused by this massive mud slide. it started about 500 yards up this mountain and we're told this debris could take about a week to clear. >> to say that it is massive is an understatement. we're looking at 3,000 to 5,000. >> they said this is the largest mud slide he's ever seen in the county. >> people still have a way to get out. >> about 15 miles north, drivers were around a major thorough fare after a huge tree smashed into a power line. >> they'll to have wait for hours to get into his house while he waits for pg&e crews to clear the area. he kept a close eye on the napa river that overflowed its banks. you can see the mud and trees on the lodi bridge where water had rushed over the road. and back in napa, crews continue to monitor this saturated hills just west of town. pg&e crews have cut the power to the area. unfortunately, the ground is too uncertain so crews cannot mov

nearby redwood road is closed from a mudslide tuesday. crews still haven't been able to clear the amount of debris left behind. 92 people have no power, should have power back by 8 p.m. >> we pulled out after request of pg&e so that they could start working their magic and doing -- putting the power lines back up. >> reporter: as for locals they are used to this kind of flooding. >> not too bad. i think it was a little bit more the other night. >> reporter: road crews just want people to be aware of how quickly conditions change and that just because it isn't raining doesn't mean the impact is over. >> watch for downed power lines. be alert. stay off the phone. and watch for changing conditions. they can happen in seconds. >> reporter: you can see some debris floating down the river. this is what city leaders were worried about. they blocked off some of the riverside earlier because they were worried trees would get pulled into the water because the ground is so saturated. there were some unusual places for flooding we saw in napa today.

this is the redwood canyon golf course. that is the 9th green of this golf course, not normally an island green. it is now, thanks to the overflowing san leandro creek that has also covered the road and left a group of retired teachers stranded. this overflowing creek interrupted what was supposed to be a luncheon for the local chapter of the california retired teachers association. instead, it turned into a rescue mission for alameda county fire, when the clubhouse of the redwood canyon golf course became an island. >> i've been with the park district almost 17 years and i've never seen the water rise to this level. >> it was flooding when we came in but it wasn't too high so we were able to drive in carefully. there were seven of us and they did serve us lunch. it was very nice. >> this is really believable because this is castro valley. this never happens in castro valley. we just kept watching it rise and rise. we went out and took pictures because it didn't sound like a little storm, it sounded like a big river. >> rep
