the slide has blocked off the 3,500 block of redwood road indefinitely. >> reporter: the slide started about 60 feet above redwood road where you see that structure brought down by the force of the landslide. it also goes about 80 feet wide this way and brought down a number of trees and mud with it. tonight a hillside gave way in napa. piles of mud, rock, and trees tumbling down to redwood road. >> this just looks like this hillside got oversaturated. we'll have to look at whether there are any human c as well. >> reporter: the street will be shut down at least into the morning. rescuers patrolled by boat in search of those standing their ground, refusing to evacuate until there is no ground left to stand on. this man, surrounded by water, and suffering from hypothermia by the time firefighters got to him tonight. >> they think they can stay in their houses. and water is kind of a slow death. and it just keeps coming up. >> reporter: the waters of the laguna wetlande been coming up throughout the day, overwhelming homes, cars, and storefronts. leaving streets accessible only by kayak.

(landingááá) while the strike can cause anxiety and confusion for many of the districts 36-thousand students and their families. its important to stress that all oakland unified schools will be open and district leaders expect students to attend class. but students showing up to school will likely see their teachers outside... carrying picket signs. inside ... the district is saying students will be taught by principals, office staff and temporary emergency teachers. schools still will be offering lunch. and all state and federally funded after-school programs will be open. but for parents who don't feel comfortable with having their kids cross the picket line ... there are alternatives. the teacher's union has partnered up with the oakland parks department... to help occupy children. and at least one oakland church is stepping up.... taylor memorial united methodist church says they can take in up t0 250 students for the duration of the strike. <'we are offering them hot breakfast we a
